To think Tom Cruise is a really lovely bloke?

Just seen him on Graham Norton and he's so funny and able to laugh at himself. His co-stars always seem to love him and he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy. I know he gets a lot of bad press but I am not sure it's all deserved.

Oh I love that indoctrination video of him on gawker.com (can't link - sorry)
Very bizarre!

nibbers · 03/06/2014 21:26

Its the whole Scientology thing for me. That just makes him Weird.

I agree with the whole PR thing - definitely trying to clean up his image.

Feartheescalator · 03/06/2014 21:29

Lovely chap - his views on PND are simply delightful.

ThaneOfScunthorpe · 03/06/2014 21:32

Shape-shifting lizard. For sure.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 03/06/2014 21:33

"he just comes across as a thoroughly nice guy"

He can come across as anything he likes, he's an actor ferchrissakes.

He's a Scientologist. Ergo he's a loon. A dangerous loon

elQuintoConyo · 03/06/2014 21:35

He has dead eyes, like a doll's eyes (or Brice the shark from Jaws!). In this way he reminds me of Mel Gibson, there's some horrible stuff going on behind the eyes.

Top Gun is only worth watching for Val Kilmer

elQuintoConyo · 03/06/2014 21:37

Bruce the shark ^^ heck knows who Brice is! His posh Ivy League cousin?

Gennz · 03/06/2014 22:26

I'm not a fan. I do feel a bit sorry for him though, I think he had a hard childhood.

This is an interesting little snippet: wildthymesbook.com/?p=232

Chippednailvarnish · 03/06/2014 23:00

I was interested how the Tom Cruise and Seth MacFarlaine (family guy) bloke would play out on Graham Norton as Family Guy have seriously taken the piss out of Tom Cruise for years.

It wasn't mentioned and Cruise just kept grinning...

TheSpottedZebra · 03/06/2014 23:19

That GN episode was interesting.
AGree that Charlize seemed frosty with Tom - but Emily Blunt seemed to hate Charlize but even more so, Seth McFarlane. There was one shot where she was leaning away from them so much that she looked like a very leany thing.

I think that TC has suppressed his real self for so long that he has utterly lost track of who he is. He's almost now a collection of 'nots' rather then anything positive - ie not gay, not creepy, not not seeing his daughter...

Plus, his career, stardom has been so damaged by the whole Katy debacle that he seems to have lost most of what he suppressed himself for. He has hardly done any press for this film, and when he has done, it has been alongside Emily Blunt - not like him at all.

On the positive side, he does have a rep for signing lots of autographs and giving everyone his famous rictus grin.

ohmymimi · 04/06/2014 01:39

He's a Scientologist, ergo not normal ( and 'normal' covers a very wide spectrum of behaviour/life choices). I've always found his public persona just too over the top, too try hard and therefore a veneer. How he gets on with his fellow actors only they know. I'm not sure any of this makes him a bad person, or of malign intent; but, the apparent relief of his last two wives on their departure from the marriages suggests something very off kilter. If true, the 'Wild Thymes' snippet reveals, and explains, a lot.

BOFster · 04/06/2014 01:50

He is hugely powerful in Hollywood. The Scientology lot couldn't do without him. I recall Zac Efron on Graham Norton telling a 'heartwarming' story about being invited as a kid to have a go on his motorbike...

These things may or may not be related.

CateBlanket · 04/06/2014 01:53

Don't know why a Scientologist is viewed with more suspicion than, say, a Catholic Hmm

He raised his two children after his divorce from Nicole Kidman.

diggerdigsdogs · 04/06/2014 02:03

I suspect he is a very well socialised Psychopath and does very little that doesn't benefit him in some way.

Nicole post divorce was a picture telling a 1000 words.

Having said that I always enjoy his movies and think he's a good actor.

AppleYumYum · 04/06/2014 02:31

Sorry but I've got to say YABU, he's a creepy creepy little man who is probably trying a new PR stunt to charm everyone into forgetting what a weirdo he is, bet the movie scripts had stopped rolling in...

SquidgersMummy · 04/06/2014 02:32

Read this www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1180571/

It's bloody marvellous. A proper medical journal article entitled "Tom Cruise is dangerous and irresponsible". I think he was quite nice but hadn't realised what stupid things he's said. Sorry OP YABU Wink

CateBlanket · 04/06/2014 02:33

Just watched the Graham Norton show; didn't like Charlize at all - doesn't come across as a woman's woman.

ZenGardener · 04/06/2014 02:49

I like his movies but I have read reports that every single thing is controlled, practiced, analysed. Every movement, every word. It's a hard way to live your life.

ThaneOfScunthorpe · 04/06/2014 02:49

"Don't know why a Scientologist is viewed with more suspicion than, say, a Catholic"

Because it's a cult?

differentnameforthis · 04/06/2014 03:56

Of course he comes across as a nice guy on TV. He wants you to buy his films, watch his films, so you make him even richer.

Animation · 04/06/2014 04:04

I makes good movies. And yes he's charming and comes across as nice in interviews, but my gut feeling is to be wary of him - as I sense he might be scary to live with.

Animation · 04/06/2014 04:05

He makes good movies.

Veins · 04/06/2014 07:07

"Don't know why a Scientologist is viewed with more suspicion than, say, a Catholic"

Agree, not sure of the difference between a cult and a religion.

NickiFury · 04/06/2014 08:34

I'm afraid that in a week where I have discovered this Tuam I am not sure that religion of any kind should be more accepted than the "cult" of Scientology.

I have no time for any religion/cult but to me it seems daft to be viewing his beliefs with such suspicion in light of the constant atrocities being committed in the name of religion daily, yet we are all supposed to respect those beliefs Hmm.

I thought he was dull and boring even his funny story was a snoozefest, he is also too smiley, yabu
