to think the 'common law/freeman on the land' thing is a whole load of bollocks?

I've come across a few people over the last few years that take it very seriously and bang on at length about how the police and courts have no authority over them as they are self declared 'freemen'. Something to do with common law being the only true law in Britain, I think? And not having to wear bike helmets or pay for TV licenses or repay your debts also seem important to the ones I've had the dubious pleasure of meeting.

A couple I met at the weekend have taken the biscuit though and not registered their baby's birth because apparently this will mean said baby grows up to be a 'freeman' (she's actually a girl but the term appears to be freeman anyway). They believe quite firmly that to register her birth will mean that the law assumes her and her name (which is a fucking corker, of course) are one and the same and that only by NOT registering her birth can she be free to be a human being. Quite what this actually means is a mystery to me and tbh the mumbo jumbo they gave me by way of an answer leads me to suspect they don't really know either Hmm

I've tried to read up on it but all the info I can find is written in a style you'd expect of an paranoid, delusional, and possibly hallucinating chimpanzee let loose with a legal dictionary.

So AIBU to think this is bollocky woo of the most fucking ridiculous type? Or is someone going to come along and actually enlighten me as to wtf its all about, preferably in plain English with no pseudo-legalese?

Actually tw85, as this thread demonstrates, there are women who understand common law very well. You know actually have letters after their name (although if they're not in caps does that even count ;) ) I will pay £100 to the charity of your choice if you can demonstrate just one example of FOTL ideology working in a British court

flippinada · 03/10/2016 19:13

Does anyone have a link to that documentary? I'd be interested to see it.

Woody67 · 03/10/2016 20:01

They sound like a pair of dickheads! What is the baby's name?

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 03/10/2016 20:16

I saw one of the "legal name" posters in Redhill earlier, there's obviously more than one FOTL in the area. Who is paying for them, and what is their actual point? There didn't seem to be any link to further info, so is it just raising awareness of the "cause"?

ghostyslovesheep · 03/10/2016 20:23

fuck me is mansplainer back again Hmm

fastdaytears · 03/10/2016 20:35

Could not be happier to have this resurrected.

Please tell us how you have managed to beat the system...

flippinada The red represents the 'flesh and blood' human being. It's a means of declaring themselves separate from the 'legal fiction' that our big bad governments make lots of money off. It's fascinating stuff and hugely entertaining. One of their most poplar websites is called Get Out Of Debt Free. Which tells you everything you need to know really.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/10/2016 23:16

Seriously this isn't in Classics yet? It's one of my favourite threads ever.

flightywoman · 03/10/2016 23:23

HOW did I miss thins all the other times it was resurrected?! It's GOLD. Oh, wait, that mean it's less that gold? Oh no...

Brew
flightywoman · 03/10/2016 23:25

Also, what other types of human being are there? Apart from flesh and blood I mean?

Can I be a "gin and pizza" human being? I'd like that...

Boogers · 03/10/2016 23:35

Where's tw85 gone? I was settling down for a nice discussion but she seems to have disappeared. Sad

LisaMed1 · 03/10/2016 23:42

I will listen carefully to anyone who can explain how the Family Law Act comes under Admiralty law.

I will also listen carefully to anyone who comes on here and actually explains the theory rather than telling us we are all stupid. I will really pay attention if they do this starting at a common point of reference and using terms in the way that are understood by the majority of the UK WITHOUT USING CAPS

Common Law, by it's nature, is not set in stone but constantly evolving and has evolved from law codes and statutes.

There ought to be a sort of bat signal - hey guys! The stupid trap caught another one!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/10/2016 23:51

LisaMed I think I love you.

LisaMed1 · 03/10/2016 23:57

Hearts Thank you, I feel all unworthy

I am not normally this assertive on a forum, but this blatant disregard for history and legal process pushes some intense buttons.

I mean, where do they think the Common Law comes from? Do they think the stork left it under the gooseberry bush?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/10/2016 00:02
Grin

I have to admit a large part of it was your mastery of swearing up thread about four years ago

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/10/2016 00:03

Did you ever write that history of law?

NatashaGurdin · 04/10/2016 00:04

LisaMed I think I love you.

Me too Hearts!

LisaMed1 · 04/10/2016 00:16

I never got round to it - I've had a lot of real life going on and currently recovering from surgery (v minor, but still).

To be honest, I don't think it would have any effect whatsoever on the freeman of the land types. After all, they never let facts get in the way of getting ripped off by phoney con merchants peddling pseudo legal slug droppings that have no connection with reality as we know it. I may bump it up the priorities as a fun project, but it would be like trying to make a hammer that could nail fog.

Blush I don't normally swear that much.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/10/2016 01:16

Well, no, it wouldn't have much impact on the nutjobs would it Grin

But it would be a hugely interesting and enjoyable read for a lot of other people, self included! You write very well. If you ever do get around to it please let us know and definitely add in some swearing, it would round it out nicely

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/10/2016 01:17

Hope your recovery goes well Lisa Flowers

flippinada · 04/10/2016 10:25

Well, you learn something new every day Kissmyshades - that makes sense, in the mad world these people inhabit, of course!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 04/10/2016 12:38

Thanks for the link cock, so basically no one really knows anything about the posters other than just seeing them around. That seems an 'interesting' use of money and advertising space then

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/10/2016 13:46

Ah, this is the thread that just keeps on giving Grin
