We found out that we are expecting ds2 today, we are very excited and we have a boy's name which we love.

The name is Frej ( Frey/fryer)

The only problem is that Frej is often depicted as having a huge errect naked penis. We visit a Viking farm every week, they have a statue of Frej which has a big penis so it likely the child will find out about being named after a falic god pretty early.

Frej is the god of fertility, but also prosperity, sunshine and fair weather.

Wibu to give my child this name or will it cause huge embarrassment as he gets older?

I love the photos that Google images brings up, he's often depicted as just standing looking into the distance with a huge erection, the images don't tend to look at all sexual apart from the massive cock.

It's a good point that the Swedes are more relaxed about sexuality, I have worked with kids here and there seems to be lots of toilet humour, silly songs about poo and wee but I haven't heard any genital related giggling.

I do love the name Loki but it's very popular, I know 3 Lokis, one we see at least once a week so I don't think we can choose that name. The other Norse mythology name we like is Tor, but it's quite hard for English speaking people to pronounce.

I have spoken to dp about it ( he's Swedish) and he doesn't see a problem, he thinks it might be quite apt as it was very easy to see tha thebaby was a boy, the sonographer didn't need to look between the baby's legs she should tell from the profile image, dp thinks it will me a funny story to tell ds2 when he grows up, I'm not too sure Hmm

OP didn't drip feed - who starts every post with 'I live in ' ?!

I like the name Frej. I think I'd do it, especially as it's a known name in Sweden and you personally know of others.

manicinsomniac · 28/05/2014 18:31

I know a dog called Loki. Isn't he the God of mischief? That seems like a worse temptation of fate than the big penis thing!

Cute name though.

Latara · 28/05/2014 18:35

The thread title alone made me giggle.

So I would say no, don't do it.

I know a Swedish family where the boys / men are named with nice names with no association with erections...

thepurplepenguin · 28/05/2014 18:35

It wasn't a bloody drip feed, anyone with half an ounce of sense should have worked out op was in Sweden.

I like it btw.

OnlyLovers · 28/05/2014 18:36

I know a dog called Loki. Isn't he the God of mischief?

Yes, and in the mythology he brings about the Twilight of the Gods/end of the world.

That's serious mischief. Grin

Borttagen · 28/05/2014 18:38

I'm in Sweden and married to a Swede and don't think anyone would be bothered about Frej (which is not pronounced fryer or at least not the way I say fryer!). DH hates the name Loke because he wasn't a nice god. Some of the Norse gods' names are being used more by neo nazis, like Odin which I love.

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 18:39

Loki is the god of mischief but the Loki we see every week is tge sweetest, most well behaved little boy I have ever met! I've know him since he was a baby and I don't remember a single naughty moment!

My friend's little boy is called Frey and I had no idea about the penis thing. He's a cool little dude so I love the name, regardless of any connotations.

squoosh · 28/05/2014 19:15

Now I really want to meet a man called Frej with a mighty erection.

LadyOfSomewhereElse · 28/05/2014 19:31

I checked out the Wiki list of fertility gods There is a LOT of them. Confused I like Frej and I don't think the big willy connection is a problem.

Laka is a cool name for a girl she is the patron of the hula dance and god of fertility. Grin (useless fact )

LancashireTea · 28/05/2014 19:38

I think it is fantastic name. A friend of mine used to teach a Thorstein. And no-one blinked twice. Even in Manchester.

Go for it, and if you ever move it'll mean he's not another . I mean I have 4 girls called Millie in one of my classes this year.

And so what if the statue is a bit phallic - he can always use it as a chat up line when he gets older. Wink

TheEmpress · 28/05/2014 19:38

Min - the Egyptian god of fertility, reproduction and lettuce Grin

Sorry, off topic...

RosiePosiePing · 28/05/2014 19:43

I like it. No worse than being called Dick, I guess.

TulipOHare · 28/05/2014 19:58

I like it, in fact it was on my list for DS (spelled with a Y though). I didn't know about the penis depictions though Grin

Didn't use it, but still think it's a great name.

attheendoftheday · 28/05/2014 20:26

YANBU. Frey was one of my top boys names, I love it (and I don't live in Sweden). I don't think most people would hear Frey and think Cock.

CaisleanDraiochta · 28/05/2014 20:40

My DS has a teddy bear called Frej (its on the label, hes not a Viking buff btw) that we bought on holiday in France.

I had no idea of where the name came from until this thread and DS doesn't pronounce it frey (he uses the soft French j sound) so hopefully no one has been a bit Hmm about a little boy with a teddy named after a god with a big knob!

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 21:30

I'm glad some people like the name despite the penis relation!

Lots of the Freja depictions are also quite erotic sexual and it doesn't seem to have put anyone off using that name.

This is a lovely picture of Frej and Freja, their parent's must be so proud ;)

I am mildly disappointed its just Frey you are considering
because when I read your thread title I was hoping the name was

Priapus Shivalingam

CaptWingoBings · 28/05/2014 23:28

I thought it was going to be Shiva too.

Toadinthehole · 28/05/2014 23:36

Loki?? He's the god of fire, and traditionally considered a menace. Shame, because he's the only Norse god I warm to, if you'll pardon the pun.

Imagine Christianity dying out, being forgotten, and then being rediscovered 1,000 years later. Imagine a bunch of parents naming their sons Judas to be ol and authentic.

Personally I wouldn't give my child the name of a Norse god. Loki aside, they've no sense of humour at all. But if you insist, what's wrong with Fenris?

Helpys · 28/05/2014 23:51

My mind's boggling at Tor being hard to pronounce- is it very different?

mimishimmi · 29/05/2014 04:42

Had a look at that list of fertility gods..

Min, god of fertility, reproduction, and lettuce

Well, that made me almost spit out my coffee LOL. All the others are gods of fertility, water, crops etc. Who knew there was a god of lettuce?

Eastpoint · 29/05/2014 05:46

We live in London and know several Frej but they are older, year 5 & year 11. I think it's just thought of as a Scandinavian name.

Hakluyt · 29/05/2014 05:55

"I like it. No worse than being called Dick, I guess."

Which of course would be an incredibly sensible thing to call a little boy in an English speaking country........Hmm
