wibu to name my ds after a god who is often depicted with a big errect penis?

We found out that we are expecting ds2 today, we are very excited and we have a boy's name which we love.

The name is Frej ( Frey/fryer)

The only problem is that Frej is often depicted as having a huge errect naked penis. We visit a Viking farm every week, they have a statue of Frej which has a big penis so it likely the child will find out about being named after a falic god pretty early.

Frej is the god of fertility, but also prosperity, sunshine and fair weather.

Wibu to give my child this name or will it cause huge embarrassment as he gets older?

Awesome idea

Paq · 28/05/2014 15:40

I wouldn't. His teenage years would be dire.

And it's spelt phallic.

Berryglitter · 28/05/2014 15:41

Oh I love the name. I'm of no help whatsoever to you though. I never knew there was a god with a large rod on named frey. So maybe it won't be an issue.

MrsBungle · 28/05/2014 15:42

No, I really wouldn't.

Hoppinggreen · 28/05/2014 15:42

Probably wouldn't if it's a pretty well known " thing"

MamaLazarou · 28/05/2014 15:42

You are over-thinking it. Most people will not have heard of the name or the god or his penis. YANBU.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 28/05/2014 15:42

YABU. Life's tough enough without being given a stupid name. Especially as you can't even claim you didn't know about the cock aspect... Hmm

WillieWaggledagger · 28/05/2014 15:44

well it's better than i though it was going to be. i thought you were going to call him priapus

Lizzylou · 28/05/2014 15:47

I had never heard of Frej, but if it is a statue at a local attraction and others will recognise it, erm, no.

Plus, it's an awful lot for him to live up to.

EatDessertFirst · 28/05/2014 15:47

What Cogito said.

If you want to stick to a deity name, then surely one without the huge cock connection would be more appropriate. Or just something more regular. The kids at my secondary school with strange names were not a source of envy. Poor souls.

FloozeyLoozey · 28/05/2014 15:48

Viking market every week?! Where do you live OP?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 28/05/2014 15:49

BTW even if kids don't get the cock reference, unless you live in leafy Hampstead he'd go through life being called 'Fridgey' or 'Fred'

CommunistLegoBloc · 28/05/2014 15:49

Please don't.

Smo2 · 28/05/2014 15:50

You know everyone is going to call him Fredge don't you?

Penis thing aside.....

MrsKoala · 28/05/2014 15:51

it depends on how well known the big cocked god is in Sweden i suppose. If it's really common in the cultural mythology there, then no i wouldn't.

Is it pronounced Fryer?

kentishgirl · 28/05/2014 15:51

I thought it might have been Priapus's dad, Hermes, often depicted in the same way.

I don't think many people will connect the name Frej with all that. But they might think it's pronounced Fridge and go like this Hmm.

PavlovtheCat · 28/05/2014 15:52

What Smo2 said.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 28/05/2014 15:53

Just no

PiratePanda · 28/05/2014 15:54

Don't. Most people are only familiar with the name Freya. They'll think you gave him a girl's name unless they already know about the massive cock association

nauticant · 28/05/2014 15:54

Frej makes me think of either Fred or fridge. If in doubt though, I'd probably Google in which case it would make me think of penis.

intheenddotcom · 28/05/2014 15:55

I think it is a lovely name and wouldn't be bothered.

Perspective21 · 28/05/2014 15:56

I also think people will not understand the reference and think you've given him a girl's name!

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 15:58

I should have said, we live in Sweden so Frej would be easy to say and although it's not in the top 100 I have met 2 people, a teenager and a toddler called Frej. My ds goes to a nursery which has quite alternative ideas, the kids mostly have unusual odd names, there are 2 girls called Hedwig and a boy who's actual name is Viking.

The Viking farm is fantastic, it's a village built like a traditional Viking village with people dressed up as Vikings and Viking crafts, there are also farm animals wondering around free range that you can pet, it's free so we visit very often! They have statues of Tor Freja and Frej, I only noticed the large penis yesterday so maybe the child would take a while to notice.

Frej was Freja's twin brother, I'm not sure why it isn't as popular as the name Freja/freya, possibly due to the giant cock.

PiratePanda · 28/05/2014 15:59

Oh, dripfeed, excellent. Hmm

fuzzpig · 28/05/2014 16:02

No way. It's a nice name but given that you know about the connection, and presumably anyone local will know too if this Viking thing is nearby.

It only takes ONE child (or even parent of another child) to make the connection, and your DS could be in for merciless bullying for YEARS.
