We found out that we are expecting ds2 today, we are very excited and we have a boy's name which we love.

The name is Frej ( Frey/fryer)

The only problem is that Frej is often depicted as having a huge errect naked penis. We visit a Viking farm every week, they have a statue of Frej which has a big penis so it likely the child will find out about being named after a falic god pretty early.

Frej is the god of fertility, but also prosperity, sunshine and fair weather.

Wibu to give my child this name or will it cause huge embarrassment as he gets older?

Haha, I love your outrage Panda Grin

Hoppinggreen · 28/05/2014 16:06

Well her name is ikea is my local and she referred to a Viking farm, pretty safe to assume she's not from Bradford!!

fuzzpig · 28/05/2014 16:10

Oops hadn't seen the drip feed when I posted :o

I still wouldn't though I think, not unless it was a very popular name.

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 16:11

I think I need to canvas how known Frej and his appendage is in sweden, I had no idea, I just imagined he was like Freja, a god of fertility and other things. Frej is especially associated with Sweden but I'm not sure if children learn about him in school.

I'm sorry for the drip feed, I do forget that everyone doesn't know everything I know.

Hmm, I wonder if those who have called their dds Freya (Freja) have seen how this goddess is portrayed. Looks like she's -ahem- readily accessible, and quite bendy. You can see why Frej needs to be well endowed, too.

Viviennemary · 28/05/2014 16:14

It would be a daft thing to do. Find a different name.

WillieWaggledagger · 28/05/2014 16:14

you could do a call-out for swedish mumsnetters and ask if they would call their son frej?

mercibucket · 28/05/2014 16:16

Well as you live in sweden and his name presumably is not used there, i would avoid! Shame - i quite liked it and 'freya' is v popular

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 28/05/2014 16:18

It's a lovely name, my only concern would be that I'd be jinxing him...

You know how those named Patience, or Grace or Prudence often end up being the opposite to their name (probably a self fulfilling prophecy), I'd worry that the virile name would curse ds with ED and a small penis :o

But I'm sure it wouldn't! And I've known patient Patiences too!

KoalaFace · 28/05/2014 16:23

I assumed you were Swedish or lived in Sweden now from your OP. I know a Swedish Frej. Pronounced Frey. I think it's a lovely name.

If i were you I'd ask for advice from other people living in Sweden. Without knowing how prevalent and giggle inducing Frej is I can't really advise!

maras2 · 28/05/2014 16:23

Frej is fine if you're Scandinavian.I thought you were going to call him Priam after the Trojan king with a huge < knob > reputation. That would just be silly.

nonmifairidere · 28/05/2014 16:29

Apparently there is an icebreaker named Frej - you can see why.

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 16:29

I do worry about jinxing him, our first child is called something to do with elves/fairies as I imagined he'd be quite dreamy and timid child but he is infact very much grounded in reality and the least timid toddler I know, he will only entertain the idea of looking at books if they are about diggers, tractors or trucks, he has no interest in elves, dragons or fairy tails!

I think it's fine. The Swedes are way cooler with big old cocks than the blushing Brits.

LizzieVereker · 28/05/2014 16:32

I like it. Wouldn't worry about the cock thing. I am surrounded by Archies, Alfies and Ronnies most of whom show every sign of turning into massive cocks as adults sorry that was mean, so am all for a name that's different, and is drawn from the cultural heritage of the place you live.

MissWimpyDimple · 28/05/2014 16:37

I know a boy called Frey and didn't know about the phallic connection.

Slightly pointless posting on UK forum though as could have completely different meaning in Sweden!

squoosh · 28/05/2014 16:41

Plenty of women in the UK called Sheila.

Here is a picture of a Sheila na Gig.

What about calling him after the viking god Loki?

PrimalLass · 28/05/2014 17:17

No. It is cruel.

OnlyLovers · 28/05/2014 17:24

I think it's a nice name. I'd probably say it was OK in the UK, let alone Sweden (but I might be a weirdo).

MissWimpy, it's not just a UK forum; there are people here from/living in all corners of the world!

I snorted at 'I am surrounded by Archies, Alfies and Ronnies most of whom show every sign of turning into massive cocks as adults sorry that was mean' Grin

misssmapp · 28/05/2014 17:31

Sorry, no opinions of the name dilema, but just googled images of frej- some fantastic household ornamanets there !!!!!

misssmapp · 28/05/2014 17:34

or even ornaments !

eddielizzard · 28/05/2014 17:35

i like the name.. but not sure i'd do that to my kid.

MooMaid · 28/05/2014 17:56

Hardly dripfeed of the century, you dont have to tell everyone your life story just to ask a question about names.... I'd say if you like it go for it, its not my choice of name but really I think you'll know better than us about how it'll go down in Sweden
