To think that women cannot 'see' HD?

UtterFool · 26/05/2014 01:23

I was having dinner with friends and there was some banter about my mate's new HD TV.

When his wife is watching it he always walks in and makes a huge fuss about why she's not watching said programme in HD. Apparently she cannot tell the difference so I turned to my wife and asked if she could on ours, "I cannot tell the difference either" she says Shock

I remember having the same conversation with another mate at work so am wondering if my huge sample size (of three) is representative of the entire female population?

Or perhaps some women just don't give two hoots about stuff that men get so hyped up about?

I am female and can't really see the difference. We have Freesat HD so all the BBC channels apart from BBC1 have changed to HD but it just looks the same. The only way I can tell is by the subtitles.

Many years ago when we changed from Sky to Sky Digital the difference was amazing and I expected something similar from HD.

snoofle · 26/05/2014 12:48

I dont think I can tell the difference.
I think I can if DH points it out, but then promptly forget again. I wouldnt bother with it if it was just me.

Suzannewithaplan · 26/05/2014 12:52

men are more visual

What kind of antediluvian, cod evolutionary psychology, meaningless 'men are from mars' nonsensical fluff is that! :o

Suzannewithaplan · 26/05/2014 12:54

Visual acuity is not strongly correlated with gender afaik??

Suzannewithaplan · 26/05/2014 12:55

Suspect it is at least in part dependent on environmental factors.

GlaikitFizzog · 26/05/2014 13:00

Tinkerball where?? Channel 103 or is it hidden?

GlaikitFizzog · 26/05/2014 13:03

Found it 178! Thank you :o

Thumbwitch · 26/05/2014 13:13

Cashmiriana, yes! I hate it when people have their screen set to "short and wide" - everyone looks so dumpy and squat!

PuppyMonkey · 26/05/2014 13:27

I am a woman and of course I can tell the difference.Confused

I will only watch HD channels, if it's not on HD it's not on my telly. Our main TV is 42 inches, though, we have smaller one in our bedroom which hasn't got HD and the pic looks ok in standard definition because it's a much smaller screen.

Wtf to sitting no more than 8ft away from a 50" tv! If that's what you have to do to 'see' HD then no wonder most people can't tell the difference.

How big are your living rooms?!

I've just measured, and the distance between the TV (next to one wall) and the settee (against the other wall) comes in at eight feet.

I didn't think we were particularly cramped, either!

Frostedloop · 26/05/2014 14:15

Male here, can tell the difference, generally don't give a shit about it though unless nipples, footballs or space ships are involved though.

To clarify those things not at the same tim.. oh holy shit that'd be awesome.

LadyOfLlangollen · 26/05/2014 14:17

I don't think I would want to appear on HD TV and I really wouldn't want to appear on widescreen HD TV. It doesn't do anything for anyone who is not super slim with perfect skin Confused.

kickassangel · 26/05/2014 14:25

Another female able to tell the difference.

FraidyCat · 26/05/2014 14:52

Some people are horrified at the idea of watching a four foot wide (50") screen from eight feet. That's my setup and I'm happy with it, but I'm not going to call them luddites, because I'm having trouble comprehending the attraction of the new ultra HD that's just arriving. Presumably that would mean you'd have to sit eight feet from a eight foot wide screen to get the full benefit. Surely that would get your head turning from side to side as you followed the action. CalamitouslyWrong · 26/05/2014 15:20

It is not some conspiracy Hmm; there really is a huge difference.

It does show up cheap sets and costumes with skin coloured bits in them, so you don't get the same illusions you get in SD. But that doesn't really bother me.

There is a 4K TV set up in fenwicks and it is amazing. There's so much detail it looks three dimensional.

NotCitrus · 26/05/2014 16:17

I can see the difference but much of the time don't want to (Jeremy Clarkson's pores? No thanks.)
However did download Sherlock in HD cos Benedict Cumberbatch in HD... [shallow]

calmet · 26/05/2014 16:19

Women and men don't have different kinds of eyes. If some women can not see HD, then some men will not be able to see it.

GarlicMayonnaise · 26/05/2014 16:31

I'm WELL over 50 and female, and can see the difference straight away! I don't have an HD feed, though, and my broadband's erratic. 'Normal' TV looks a whole lot worse on my HDTV than on the old CRT. I watch most things on the laptop now. Thanks for the technical insight, Bertie :)

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 26/05/2014 16:36

I have 32" tv and sit maybe 10/11ft away. If I want HD I put my glasses on Grin. I can't imagine wanting a 50" telly, it must dominate the whole room. Each to their own though :)

Suzannewithaplan · 26/05/2014 16:38

according to this women are more 'visual' Women see scarlet, men see red

beccajoh · 26/05/2014 16:50

I can see it fine, just don't give a shite about it!

TillyTellTale · 26/05/2014 16:53

suzannewithaplan and others who have pointed out the same.

Makes sense. First thing I thought when I read the OP was that ironically enough, it's a bank holiday Monday, which means those unvisual wimmenfolk will be thronging B&Q and discussing the difference between Slug Grey and Snail Grey, along with various shades of Boring Beige. Grin

CalamitouslyWrong · 26/05/2014 17:06

DH is convinced that some of you have hooked up your hd wrong. If you can't see any difference, it might be that you're trying to get hd through a scart lead or something.

Suzannewithaplan · 26/05/2014 17:15

'men are more visual' is an item of double speak usually put forward to excuse men for looking at porn/looking women in the bosom instead of the face during conversation

Pastamancer · 26/05/2014 17:18

Nope, definitely plugged in correctly as DH can see the difference and a HDMI cable is very different to a scart. My spacial awareness is crap though so not sure if that affects things.
