To think that women cannot 'see' HD?

UtterFool · 26/05/2014 01:23

I was having dinner with friends and there was some banter about my mate's new HD TV.

When his wife is watching it he always walks in and makes a huge fuss about why she's not watching said programme in HD. Apparently she cannot tell the difference so I turned to my wife and asked if she could on ours, "I cannot tell the difference either" she says Shock

I remember having the same conversation with another mate at work so am wondering if my huge sample size (of three) is representative of the entire female population?

Or perhaps some women just don't give two hoots about stuff that men get so hyped up about?

I am another who can tell the difference but doesn't care (except when watching nature programmes).

Most of the hype about HD came from comparing it with American TVs, as traditional TVs in the US had absolutely dreadful definition - they used a different standard.

BeCool · 27/05/2014 13:44

I can usually tell the difference - but I'm another who really doesn't care.

BeCool · 27/05/2014 13:46

Good sounds is more important to me - I get lots of complements on my TV's sounds quality and I guess I am used to that as I do get quite annoyed with poor sound quality on some friends TV's.

Redcoats · 27/05/2014 13:54

I can tell the difference on nature programmes but not with anything else.
'Why aren't you watching it in HD?' Is a daily occurrence in our house. It's Eastenders, I can still see it.

Surround sound = Normal telly but louder. Movie/theatre/sports/music modes. All the same.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 27/05/2014 13:59

I prefer to watch TV in HD, there's a definite difference, but if someone's already put something on on a SD channel I don't quite care enough to turn it over. My real joy in HD is with console games. I get unreasonably over excited with all the little details in modern games, probably because I still remember playing games on my lovely 48k Speccy. There's a game called Uncharted which starts off with you parachuting onto an island - all the individual leaves on the trees moving in the breeze made me go moist-eyed.

mummimamma · 27/05/2014 14:03

I can't tell the difference either, and on my TV people also end up sitting on each others laps when really they are sitting next to each other... I think I need new glasses.

ELR · 27/05/2014 14:15

Agree I can't tell the difference with tv unless it's pointed out to me. Same with DH's new hi if sounds the same as the old one to me!
Must be the same as when I get a new bag or shoes DH says haven't you got some like that already? They look the same!

FriedaMensch · 27/05/2014 14:39

I can't see any difference at all - but after a few minutes of an irate male flicking between HD and normal channels and asking "Can you see it now? You MUST be able to see it! This one looks MUCH clearer!" then I usually give in and pretend I can see a difference.

Fortunately this only happens when we visit family or friends, as we have a v small tv (22 inch), and it doesn't have HD anyway - so clearly I am firmly in the "don't care" camp anyway.

OuchyMcOuch · 27/05/2014 17:09

I'm a video editor, so I spend all day long staring at broadcast quality HD screens so SD makes me shudder now. I'm not happy unless I can see every pore :)

PuppyMonkey · 27/05/2014 17:59

Redcoats, EastEnders is one of THE worst things to watch in standard definition. All those gloomy interiors look foggy and awful. When I switch to HD I can see it properly. Still can't get over this, that some people can't see a difference or aren't bothered. HD all the way for me.

GarlicMayonnaise · 27/05/2014 19:01

Does it depend on how much you care about visual detail anyway? I'm also one of those who don't 'see' dirt or wrinkles in clothes, for instance. I have an array of specs & lenses for all different kinds of seeing, but did spend a decade or so wandering around in a soft-focus world before I realised I was hopelessly short-sighted! It was alarming to find things (including myself) weren't as pretty as I'd thought ... maybe I unconsciously decided to ignore the imperfections anyway Hmm

Rainbunny · 27/05/2014 19:30

I can totally tell the difference. Especially right now as I am watching the French Open on an HD channel. It's way better than the regular channel showing the matches.

PacificDogwood · 27/05/2014 20:02

DH says to me 'How can you enjoy this - it's not even HD?' in a genuinely puzzled, slightly worried-for-me way Grin
Is it a wonder that he is utterly incapable of enjoying an old, black-and-white movie?! He's missing out IMO, being that reliant on true to life reproduction.
As far as pores on people's noses go: I'd much rather NOT see them tbh.

And whoever said upthread about surround sound: I so hear you! I don't want to have the helicopter on screen sounding like it's flying all around me - I want to have the sound from where I can see the darn thing. I am plenty 'immersed' in the movie experienced by the power of whatever I'm watching (if it is any good) - 'tis called having an imagination Grin

High end HiFi: there is a law of diminishing returns IMO. Yes, expensive HiFi is better than a cheap old transistor radio, but paying 10x as much will not give you 10x as much sound quality. By the time a certain amount of money is reached upgrading will only be audible to bats. Young bats with no hearing impairment not middle-aged people like DH and I

Thumbwitch · 28/05/2014 05:18

Years ago, there was this show on the TV called Howard's Way - remember it? I hated watching that show because there was something funny about the way it was filmed - I think they'd used different filming techniques, maybe video instead of film or something (I have no clue, I am not a film tech person) - but the effect made it all too sharp and bright for me to watch in comfort. I find HD tv like that - too sharp and bright. I like most of my tv, especially action stuff, nice and flat and "separate" from me. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/05/2014 07:18

Checked our second telly tonight, it's not HD, so I will remain uninitiated.

MunchMunch · 28/05/2014 12:12

I can tell the difference and on my 65" plasma hd looks amazing!

I like a big telly, probably classed as a chav but df is very much into AV equipment and a chav probably couldn't afford my tv! Grin

MummyPigsFatTummy · 28/05/2014 12:22

I haven't RTFT so apologies if the conversation has moved on.

I can also see the difference between HD and non-HD if I flip between the two but, again, I really don't care. We have a 3D telly too and have amused ourselves (and DD) with it handful of times.

Recording in HD just fills up the space on the hard disc much quicker. I rarely see the point. Maybe if it was a program about blue whales or other nature stuff.

punter · 28/05/2014 12:29

I have not read every posting do not know if anyone has mentioned the other fancy gizmo you get with new TVs. There is a button that lets you choose (!) the sort of picture you want e.g. auto, sport, nature etc. My DH always switches it to sport for the footie and asks me if that is better. I have now learnt to say 'yes' to avoid endless moving between auto, sport etc etc so I can see 'it'. I can tell the difference with HD and non HD for sport but otherwise not. Another female who does not care.

crazykat · 28/05/2014 12:43

I can see the difference with football as its usually filmed with HD cameras. Most programmes are filmed with standard definition cameras so the picture looks a little sharper on HD channels but not much.

For me watching HD is like putting my glasses on, it makes the picture a little sharper but nothing to get excited about.

forago · 28/05/2014 12:46

We are the opposite - I have a go at Dp if he records something in non-HD.

We can both definitely tell the difference.

Ioethe · 28/05/2014 12:58

Can see it, have other things to worry about! I gues sif it floats your boat it's good? Personally I don't care.

melika · 28/05/2014 13:06

Yep I can tell it's in HD but am not bothered.

Horrified the other day when watching Corrie, I bet even the young actors hate the fact we can see their open pores!!

jmh740 · 30/05/2014 16:58

I cant tell the difference so cancelled the HD subscription.

jmh740 · 30/05/2014 16:58

I cant tell the difference so cancelled the HD subscription.

Gillybobs1 · 30/05/2014 19:37

Have no idea whether I've ever watched anything in HD or not. More interested in the content.
