To think that women cannot 'see' HD?

UtterFool · 26/05/2014 01:23

I was having dinner with friends and there was some banter about my mate's new HD TV.

When his wife is watching it he always walks in and makes a huge fuss about why she's not watching said programme in HD. Apparently she cannot tell the difference so I turned to my wife and asked if she could on ours, "I cannot tell the difference either" she says Shock

I remember having the same conversation with another mate at work so am wondering if my huge sample size (of three) is representative of the entire female population?

Or perhaps some women just don't give two hoots about stuff that men get so hyped up about?

I don't care either. And don't get me started on sound. I am married to an audiophile.

NadiaWadia · 26/05/2014 05:03

I can't tell the difference either. I reckon it is mostly hype. But then, I don't have perfect vision, so maybe that's why?

MiauMau · 26/05/2014 05:13

I can definitely see it, also woman, and it's part of my job. I'd be pretty screwed if I couldn't see it.

beanynamechange · 26/05/2014 05:24

The only programme I could tell was hd/ not was MasterChef Australia... And I don't care enough about it to keep paying the additional hd fee.. We have cancelled it on our sky package much to dps disappointment because I think it included the f1 channel?

StairsInTheNight · 26/05/2014 05:24

I can see it, but just can't be arsed to find the channel usually. And yes, it takes up loads of room to record! Why is that?

dontevenblink · 26/05/2014 05:25

The only time I could see a real difference was on sports where in HD you could make out individual people, colours etc. in the crowds, rather than just a blur. Not sure how much of a difference that makes to your general enjoyment of said sport though Hmm

Made me laugh though as DH would always ask me why I wasn't watching on HD - we live in NZ now though and tv is generally rubbish with very little in HD so makes no difference anymore Grin

MiauMau · 26/05/2014 05:49

StairsInTheNight HD images have a much higher resolution than your average image, therefore occupies a lot more storage. think of it this way, netflix average image programme spends around 700 mg/hour the new fancy HD takes about 5GB/h!!

GingerBlondecat · 26/05/2014 05:51

i can tell the difference, i just dont care

Writerwannabe83 · 26/05/2014 06:54

DH is always moaning if I watch something on the 'normal' channel instead of the HD channel. It drives me potty! Does it actually really matter?? I really don't see what the fuss is about it's not like there is a massive difference anyway.

CrispyFern · 26/05/2014 07:01

I can see it. I don't care. Neither does DH. We cancelled it by mutual agreement.

Thumbwitch · 26/05/2014 07:09

I can see it but don't care either, unless it's an amazing David Attenborough show, especially the ocean ones (underwater) because it's good to see more detail then. I don't bother with it otherwise.

I hate a lot of 3D - it's far too overdone, and is painful to watch. We went to the cinema to see a 3D film (By accident - I'd got the time wrong so we just paid the extra and did 3D) and the trailer for the Transformers film that was due out was AWFUL. UNbearable. DIdn't go and see that one of course!

I also don't like quadrophonic sound in the home. Fine in the cinema, but not in the home. Especially as the bass always seems to be set too loud in the "big noise" sections!

Longtalljosie · 26/05/2014 07:21

Yes of course I can see it but it does depend on your telly. The difference is minimal on my parents' TV. I think it was supposed to be HD ready but it was one of the early ones. We always put HD on here - if you really want to see the difference, try CBeebies.

SquirrelledAway · 26/05/2014 07:24

I can see it too but drinks pints and good at map reading so maybe should have been a bloke

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 26/05/2014 07:29

Neither DH or I can tell the difference. We 'only' have a 32" tv, I think it only makes a difference if you have a huge telly. And we rarely watch live tv so the space it takes up on the box would not be worth it even if we could.

Btw, there are very few things in life that can be split exactly as women do this, men do that. It makes you look a bit silly to suggest that this is one of them.

ouryve · 26/05/2014 07:30

I can see a difference, but don't always care. Some of the HD subtitles don't work properly, all the time, so I opt for SD then.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 26/05/2014 07:35

Dh often watches a non hd channel and it drives me mad, they look blurry.

Ragwort · 26/05/2014 07:35

No, I can't tell the difference and it drives my DH mad too Grin.

QuietNinjaTardis · 26/05/2014 07:36

What princessbabycat said. I could probably tell the difference if I looked hard enough but I just don't care. "But you can see every blade of grass" on a football pitch ffs my Dh cries. I still don't give a. Shiny shite.

perfectview · 26/05/2014 07:37

I can't tell the difference.

Neither can my husband- and he is a designer so a very 'visual' person.

We have a small tv though.

Seems like a load of unnecessary bollocks to both of us.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 26/05/2014 07:38

I can't see it either!

But I can still hear high pitched sounds at 34 like a previous poster (sorry can't scroll back up) so maybe I could if I cared a bit more Smile

QuietNinjaTardis · 26/05/2014 07:38

And what bofster said about the surround sound. My house is so noisy, bloody tele or Nintendo going. Ds is hard of hearing so extra loud and has no indoor voice to speak of and it drives me potty. I don't want to be surrounded by noise at all. Stupid technology.

coldwater1 · 26/05/2014 07:39

I can't see a difference either! Lol

Icimoi · 26/05/2014 07:41

I so don't care that we've never bothered with getting an HD TV, and DH doesn't care either.

Ploppy16 · 26/05/2014 07:44

I can tell instantly if we don't have the HD channel on. We have the HD versions programmed into the favourites In Sky so we automatically put them on.
I didn't think there was any difference until my parents got a HD TV and my Mum showede the difference during a football match, it was quite startling tbh.
I think it helps if you're a gasket geek, our TV Is a Smart one!

BiscuitCrumb · 26/05/2014 07:44

I can tell the difference but I really don't care. BBC 1 - 101 is easy; BBC HD God knows where that is?!?!
