To think that women cannot 'see' HD?

UtterFool · 26/05/2014 01:23

I was having dinner with friends and there was some banter about my mate's new HD TV.

When his wife is watching it he always walks in and makes a huge fuss about why she's not watching said programme in HD. Apparently she cannot tell the difference so I turned to my wife and asked if she could on ours, "I cannot tell the difference either" she says Shock

I remember having the same conversation with another mate at work so am wondering if my huge sample size (of three) is representative of the entire female population?

Or perhaps some women just don't give two hoots about stuff that men get so hyped up about?

I really cant see a difference. When we first got it, i flicked from one to the other trying to see, but there honestly is bog all difference. I suppose it might be a bit clearer, like the screen had a polish, but it's very tiny.
I could not look at a screen and tell whether it was hd or not, I can only see a tiny difference flicking quickly between hd and none hd.

OwlCapone · 26/05/2014 09:04

Perhaps it's because women are engrossed in the story that is being played out, the in depth emotional analysis of the characters and following the plot whist trying to guess what happens next whereas men just say "Oooh! Cool picture! Where's my beer?"

Jengnr · 26/05/2014 09:08

There is no difference. It's a marketing ploy.

RedRoom · 26/05/2014 09:11

My DH also comes in and moans if it isn't in HD. I really can see the difference in sharpness, especially with football matches and films, but it doesn't bother me enough to actively seek out HD channels.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 26/05/2014 09:11

No HD tv here, so no idea.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 26/05/2014 09:16

Lol, at Wiggly mentioning paint.

I bet if a woman posted that their DH couldn't see the difference between wanky off white paint number 1 and wanky off white paint number two, the majority of women would say that they could see the difference and most men would say that they couldn't see the difference and didn't give a shit which was used either.

I don't care about paint or TVs.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/05/2014 09:18

Neither of us can really see it here, small 32 tv though.

We could just see it if we flick back and forth - we don't bother now

Ploppy16 · 26/05/2014 09:23

I can't tell the difference between white paints at all Grin. DH and the decorator kept asking me which one I preferred - toilet bowl white or day old bread white or some such nonsense, I just couldn't see any difference at all.
TV's however I do like, especially the huge bugger with 3D and HD in our front room. On the wall.
It does make a difference, certainly to DH, he has glaucoma and watching in HD makes it much clearer for him and his (unutterably shit) eyesight.
It does still seem to be something of a gender stereotype wrt technology, women not caring but men being obsessed...

Mrsjayy · 26/05/2014 09:27

Urgh hd I dont think I care enough why do husbands take 6 months to choose a bloody telly might start a thread about that Grin

ProfYaffle · 26/05/2014 09:29

I can see the difference and insist on watching HD all the time but dh isn't bothered. On our freeview box 101 = bbc1 hd, 102 bbc2, 103 ITV etc so the channels are easy to remember plus it hectors you if you put normal SD on, a message pops up asking if you want to swap to HD.

giraffescantboogie · 26/05/2014 09:29

I didn't know there was difference...

iklboo · 26/05/2014 09:31

I can see the difference but it doesn't bother me. It's cos it's a gadget, innit.

BertieBotts · 26/05/2014 09:31

You're being pretty sexist really. I can see it but what I notice more is standard definition on a HDTV, it looks awful and blocky. Therefore I'd rather have a SD TV unless everything I watch is going to be in HD.

Now what drives me mad is when the ratio is wrong, you know when you have a 4:3 thing being shown in widescreen. And if it's zoomed in the shot looks all wrong. I'd rather whatever the name for vertical letterboxing is, but every single one of my male partners has said "Eurgh that looks horrible, make it fill the whole screen" and put it all stretched. GAHH!

Ploppy16 · 26/05/2014 09:32

Or laptops and cameras. Now that is a PITA. DH needs a new laptop for work and got some birthday money to buy himself a nice camera. 4 fecking months he's been at it. I swear I will abandon him at the Shop furthest away from us and not pick him up until he's bought something!! That's more to do with his personality though. Picky git.

chemenger · 26/05/2014 09:36

My DH also goes on about this. I can tell the difference if I really try but I don't care enough to bother with it. Never record anything in HD because of the space it takes up (and because I don't know where the HD channels are). You can tell with tennis (which I don't watch).

Tweasels · 26/05/2014 09:38

I see a big difference. I can tell the difference when DS uses an HDMI cable for the PS3 rather than the AV connectors also.

If you try watching any football on ITV not in HD you'll see a huge difference.

I think all women can see it, I just think many don't care (probably many men don't either.)

Birdsgottafly · 26/05/2014 09:38

I can tell the difference and watch in HD.

I'm glad it's been pointed out that women, biologically speaking are the "more visual", we have better depth and colour perception etc.

The myth around men being more visual was to excuse sexual crime and to kid women into thinking they had to put up with second best, when choosing/being with a partner.

UtterFool · 26/05/2014 09:39

Mrsjayy

Please feel free to use this thread if you like Wink Better out than in.

Glad most didn't take the op the wrong way as it was more of a joke about certain men than anything else. Some of us get so engrossed in tech and then wonder why our wives aren't swooning too.

We bought the TV recommended by which as having the best HD picture. It is amazing and I no longer want to watch non HD programs.

Sport is incredible in HD.
We have had the TV for a few years and still comment to each other about how amazing the picture is (obviously I wouldn't dream of mentioning it to anyone else)

There are huge differences between TVs and some HD pictures aren't great.

ToysRLuv · 26/05/2014 09:41

We can't properly install the surround sound in this house (all surround speakers are kind of in the front now), but I like it when it is properly good, even though it scares the bejeesus out of me when this go crash and bang.

DF is a proper techno freak engineer, so has to have the newest and best equipment, while DM hates all of that, because she now needs at least 3 remote controls to watch the news or the shit combined remote that gets confused (even though she also is an engineer). I once was upstairs in their house when I though a book case must have crashed down downstairs, only to rush down to see DF watching a war movie with all the furniture intact and in their places. It must have been a particularly realistic bomb sound Confused.

ToysRLuv · 26/05/2014 09:42

"this go"? it goes - of course

Bertie

Please don't take offence as this really wasn't a serious thread. I'm a fool but would be a total knob if I came on to a predominantly female site to be sexist. Apologies if I've offended though Blush

I can tell the difference between the two when you switch back and forth. But I don't look t a programme and say "oh goody is in HD and get really happy about it" like dh some people.

I watch TV to see a story or to be entertained. The quality of the programme is far more important to me than the picture quality.

ToysRLuv · 26/05/2014 09:47

Apropos quality programmes - must remember to watch (vintage) Jonathan Creek today.
