That ukip are making such huge gains in the elections.
If mnetters could temper their hysteria of screaming racism, I think it is a clear indication that the fundamental principals of the party of no toEurope and no to continued mass immigration are very important to a lot of people

Cross post, 22honey, and I think we agree on quite a bit. However, I will continue to have the 'nerve' to express my views, including about how I feel.

TucsonGirl · 23/05/2014 23:30

Why won't Labour offer a referendum on the EU? Maybe one on non-EU immigration as well.

22honey · 23/05/2014 23:31

'The problem with immigrant communities building their own schools - as suggested by UKIP, I believe - is that it keeps those communities within their own narrow confines, exacerbating the problem.'

Yes this needs to stop, people need to integrate and accept the new way of life in a different country instead of trying to take over or segregate themselves.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 23/05/2014 23:32

Jassy think you and 22 just had an x-post there - she just said that it makes her feel uneasy that people are being made to feel uncomfortable. You've both been through tough times so probably have more in common than not. Have some of gordy's Cake to smooth things over! Smile

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 23/05/2014 23:33

x-p all round! and Cake!

CharmQuark · 23/05/2014 23:34

What on earth is the point of voting a UKIP rep onto a local council? UKIP's policy is get the Uk out of Europe, and stop immigration. Neither of these are policies which councils can act on. What do UKIP voters think is giving to happen? Rotherham is going to pull out of Europe all by itself? Led by the local Mayor? Town Halls will ban immigration into their borough, possibly by barricading the streets with milk floats?

Silly protest votes, or thick voters.

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 23:35

I'm guessing it's because they think it's a terrible, terrible idea to leave the EU and a referendum would cost a fortune and distract from other things, and therefore they are standing on a platform of no referendum in the hope or belief that enough people will agree with that position to give them a mandate, this negating the need for a referendum.

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 23:36

Cheers Troels. Smile

ironmaiden999 · 23/05/2014 23:36

Oxford. Your comments are exactly why people vote UKIP. Anyone who wants lower immigration=racist. Anyone whose against gay marriage, hates gay people etc; you are definitely a good recruiting machine for UKIP. Grin

22honey · 23/05/2014 23:36

You are entitled to feel however you do about it, I was merely pointing out plenty of people have been suffering like you cannot imagine indirectly because of immigration. If there wasn't masses of people from backward non western cultures living here I may have been spared having my life ruined.

And I do personally think its a bit 'nervy' to get upset and foot stomping about the feelings of many of your fellow country people, purely because of a few votes in an election. No one has attacked you near your home or made you feel scared to leave the house because of your 'status' have they? People dont have a problem with the immigrants, they have a problem with how mass immigration is (in their eyes) affecting their lives.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:36

people need to integrate and accept the new way of life in a different country instead of trying to take over or segregate themselves

I genuinely don't see why immigrants to the UK should abandon their own identity and adopt a new one when people who have moved abroad from the UK feel no corresponding obligation to do so. British people live in exclusive enclaves all over the world. I lived in Tanzania for years and the UK expats wouldn't have dreamt of learning Swahili or respecting local practices.
That's different though, isn't it?

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 23/05/2014 23:36

Ok it must be late as an image from Passport to Pimlico just flashed into my head after Charm's post. Night all!

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:39

I was born and raised in South Africa. I moved to Tanzania and I was raped at gunpoint there by - SURPRISE - a UK national. A white one, at that. I'm not buying the argument that British men are less rapey than non-Brits.

22honey · 23/05/2014 23:41

Is there the same amount of brits living in these places as there is for instance pakistanis living in the UK?

If their 'own identity' breaks the law of and actively makes a mockery of the culture of the country they have moved to then yes they should abandon it or go home. If people can manage to uphold their identity without negatively affecting anyone else or putting anyone else in danger or breaking the laws of that country then they should be able to get on with it.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:41

And actually 22honey, a British person referring to other cultures as "backward" is pretty fucking rich. I'm guessing history isn't your strong suit.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:42

Do you have a shift key?

TucsonGirl · 23/05/2014 23:42

"I'm guessing it's because they think it's a terrible, terrible idea to leave the EU"
What they "think" doesn't matter. If the majority of people want us out of the EU then we should be out of the EU. MPs are supposed to represent us, not act as enlightened leaders who know what's best for the simple folk.

caruthers · 23/05/2014 23:43

WhistleTopTomato why are you trying to belittle her?

Do you have a superiority complex key?

JassyRadlett · 23/05/2014 23:43

22honey, you are yet again making massive assumptions about other people's lives and experiences based on your own experiences and prejudices. Which takes quite a nerve, if you're seeking to lecture others on how they should feel.

You, in turn, have no clue about my life or my experiences. So stop acting as if you've been given the right to decide how people should feel because you've had a hard time. Its rude and ignorant.

I don't think it's particularly wrong to think that British culture is superior to the culture of many other countries. There's a good reason why the balance of immigration is from poorer and less developed countries to richer and more developed countries and culture has a lot (well, pretty much everything) to do with how said countries got that way.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:45

Um yeah, they do actively make a mockery of local culture. They feel entitled to though, because like an awful lot of British people they seem to think that their own culture is the universal default and that everyone else is wrong.

As an immigrant from a former British colony I can't say I feel any sympathy at all for the British nationals who now feel that their country is being invaded and plundered by foreigners.

What goes around comes around. Deal with it.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:47

You are a stupid racist.

22honey · 23/05/2014 23:48

'You are a stupid racist.'

Ha! I cannot believe that old chestnut is all ya got.

WhistleTopTomato · 23/05/2014 23:49

If you're referring to the "culture" of invading and colonising other countries and exploiting their resources then yes, you are correct.
