To buy a Nespresso Machine?

The new inissia one, I can't see many reviews online so i'm unsure how good it is. I wouldn't say I'm a snob but instant just isn't cutting it anymore!
Plus I'm sick of paying €5+ for starbucks I know, I know every few days
I was going to buy myself a new handbag this month but I'd rather have the coffee machine!
Its €99 but with €40 cash back that will have to be sent off for and could take 6-8 weeks to come through. The handbag I wanted was €95.

Thoughts?

Imho, filter coffee tastes much cleaner and brighter than stuff from machines and is vastly cheaper, as well. You are not tied to one supplier, and filter papers go straight into the compost. You can make your own coffee as strong /weak as you like and use fairtrade/ environmentally friendly teas and coffees, if that's what you prefer. Decent coffee need not be expensive. You can get really good Rainforest Alliance ground coffee at cheap old Lidl. On the other hand, you can also splash out on delicious blends of freshly-roasted beans from exprt suppliers such as Higgins, for example: www.hrhiggins.co.uk/coffees/original_coffees/ I may be wrong, but surely decent, fresh, ground coffee wins any day for taste over stuff that was roasted and ground some time ago, and has spent weeks or months sealed up in some machine-ready pod.

topsmart · 17/05/2014 20:48

Yay for the aeropress lovers out there! Glad I'm not alone.

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 20:51

Ooh I might look into this aero jiggery pokery. Went to have a quick look at the pod shop online and the thought of spending €€€ to buy loads of capsules at once is horrific. If I only buy 30 or so at a time it doesn't seem so bad.

I felt all fancy in the shop, they gave me a membership card and everything. I am literally a marketer's wet dream.
Haven't tried it out yet because I didn't have any time but will give it a crack tomorrow morning.
I've had a Nespresso machine before yonks ago, so I'm wondering if the coffee has changed and is as foul as some of you lot claim it is.

Pound for pound, you are paying about five times more more the ground coffee which comes in a capsule, as against even high-market regular ground or bean coffee.

It's a mug's game, these machines.

HicDraconis · 17/05/2014 20:55

I don't have time to faff with grinding and tamping and frothing.

My nespresso makes good, reliable flat whites - probably not as good as an expert barista but definitely better than I achieved with my old gaggia. Better than Starbucks too.

Enjoy your machine :)

Trinovantes · 17/05/2014 20:56

(I don't think the coffee is bad coffee, per se - my palate ain't all that - I just don't like being conned into paying so very much over the odds for nespresso coffee when other methods make just as good as or better coffee, at a fraction of the price.)

The aeropress is made by aerobie the inventors of the frisbee.
I don't actually drink coffee but DH loves his. We've got through two already but we luckily have a local shop that sells them cheaper then amazon.
There are even apps to help you with the timing and whole forums devoted to the methods.

Blackjackcrossed · 18/05/2014 01:00

We have an aeropress and a nespresso, I only drink nespresso if I'm in a rush, it's nit great but it's better than instant.

Botanicbaby · 18/05/2014 01:30

Whoever said upthread that 'they recycle capsules so they're not sure why its not environmentally friendly' is spectacularly missing the point.

How about not creating a product that requires unnecessary waste in the first place? Also, it takes a great deal more energy to produce the pods however much of a spin nespresso like to put on their 'green' credentials.

There are other ways to produce a decent cup of coffee using less resources and energy, none of which would be as good a moneyspinner for nespresso.

Fair enough if you are hell bent on having a nespresso/pod machine but don't delude yourself into believing the marketing hype that you are doing your bit for the environment by opting for one that "recycles" the pods.

Don't fool yourself into thinking you are buying superior coffee either. Pod machine coffee versus Aeropress for example is like comparing babycham with vintage champagne.

Cuteypatootey · 18/05/2014 03:09

I wouldn't, you just land up drinking 10x the amount of coffee.

Hazchem · 18/05/2014 03:25

theodorous I support the nestle boycott because they actively break the regulations they say they will stick with. Oh and because parents that use formula have to pay for the the amount advertising/marketing ect that goes into selling formula. Why should parents have to pay more for an essential product. I'm working class by the way but don't let truth get in the way of a good story.

peachy do they have aldi in france? I've heard good things about their coffee pod machines. Also why not just buy another coffee plunger and good grinder? Much cheaper in the long run and not much more hassle then the pod business.

peasandlove · 18/05/2014 03:31

awful coffee, it's a gimmick we'll probably look back on one day and say "oh remember those bloody awful coffees you bought for a small fortune in those pods?"
enjoy

I find pod coffee underwhelming. I also don't like the fact that you are tied to one brand for your coffee, usually v expensive. You also have no control over how your coffee comes out - i like a very dry capuccino and i don't think you can get it from a pod.

I have a dualit espresso machine and use an aerolatte for foamed milk - it's amazingly efficient and makes really thick, spoonable foam every time. I don't use the foamer wand as the aeroatte give much better results. I highly recommend it. www.aerolatte.com

SistersOfPercy · 18/05/2014 13:37

We have a very expensive gaggia dh bought. The faff that come with grinding, tamping, frothing the milk etc then washing it all is just far too much hassle for the coffee it produces.
I bought a dolce gusto for £15 on a Tesco misprice last year. I can have a caramel macchiato in two minutes and only have wash the mug.
The gaggia now lives at the back of the cupboard.

KatieKaye · 18/05/2014 13:42

Second the idea of getting an real coffee machine- I've got a Gaggia espresso maker, which also has a milk steamer/frother and it's brilliant. You're not constrained by buying pods, just get a good grinder and beans and away you go!
IMO there is no comparison with filter coffee, which always tastes harsh to me.
And I love the classic design of a Gaggia.

Trinovantes · 19/05/2014 09:29

SistersofPercy - bung the gaggia on ebay! (Or freecycle, if you are loaded and don't need the cash.) You get cupboard space, and someone else gets the joy of the gaggia! Plus it won't make you feel guilty every time you catch sight of it.

MaoamMuncher · 19/05/2014 09:54

My dds has a tassimo which is only used for his hot chocolate addiction, he has SN and his co ordination is a bit too squiffy for managing the kettle alone so this gives him a little independence, the water not being boiling hot is also a bonus.

Bloody expensive tho, he's rationed to one a day.

SistersOfPercy · 19/05/2014 12:46

trino I wish I could but DH is more fond of it than me I think. He prefers the Gaggia, I prefer the Dolce Gusto. It's an argument we'll have forever I think but for now I'm winning.
He wouldn't get rid of it. Every time we go into Currys etc he goes all misty eyed at £400 bean to cup machines.

We have a senseo as well actually which is resigned to the caravan. Never really enjoyed the coffee from that. The Dolce Gusto is the first coffee I actually really enjoy, but that said, I'm not much of a coffee drinker and if I have a cup a week it's unusual, but I do use the Dolce for chocolate (and just the hot water for the odd cup of tea)

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/05/2014 12:55

Don't bother, pod coffee is vile. Especially the milky ones, they just taste of UHT milk.

Filter, stovetop or cafetiere vastly superior IMO.

Quite tempted to give aeropress a go though...

Bellezeboobian · 19/05/2014 17:45

I wanted one (actually found this thread when googling)

aren't they worth it then?

SistersOfPercy · 19/05/2014 17:54

It depends on the person belle. I personally prefer pod coffee and find it far from 'vile'.
Best bet is to find a friend who has a machine and go round for coffee!

Bellezeboobian · 19/05/2014 17:58

good idea Grin

i shall have to get on twitter and see who has one...

PeachyParisian · 19/05/2014 22:18

itmustbe No milk pods with this nespresso machine!

DF has one that takes milky pods, Tassimo I think? the pods are far more expensive than the nespresso ones and taste skanky. Although that might just be the costa caramel macchiato ones he buys- never was partial to a costa beverage.

Bellezeboobian Depends on where you live! I only paid €59 for mine, in the uk i think its still full price but they give you a £40 gift card to spend.

I bought one in the end and i love it, knew the coffee was palatable already and i've bought some starbucks caramel syrup to recreate the dream at home.
Its quick, faff free and is yum.
poncy machine can wait until I'm a graduate Grin As good as the aeropress looks it seems like a kerfuffle when with a machine I literally have to press one button et voila!
