To buy a Nespresso Machine?

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 12:52

The new inissia one, I can't see many reviews online so i'm unsure how good it is. I wouldn't say I'm a snob but instant just isn't cutting it anymore!
Plus I'm sick of paying €5+ for starbucks I know, I know every few days
I was going to buy myself a new handbag this month but I'd rather have the coffee machine!
Its €99 but with €40 cash back that will have to be sent off for and could take 6-8 weeks to come through. The handbag I wanted was €95.

Thoughts?

I should add that I only buy dark red decaff proper nespresso pods, or the gold ones.

McFox · 17/05/2014 15:11

I love my nespresso. I recycle the capsules so not sure why others are saying that it's not environmentally friendly? Plus there are tons of different coffees, so again saying that it's horrible seems a bit weird! Only I drink coffee, so it makes sense to have this instead of a grinder etc that I'd never have the time go faff about with.

Andrewofgg · 17/05/2014 15:50

Whole bean and hand grinder. Work for your coffee!

HermioneWeasley · 17/05/2014 16:00

theodorous if it's smug and middle class to care about infant mortality linked to exploitative corporate marketing then I'm happy to be guilty as charged.

Obviously, you actively supporting Nestle makes you much cooler than me. I bet all those bereaved parents wish they were as cool as you.

travailtotravel · 17/05/2014 16:17

*OP - we tried an adaptor, then replugged. The difference in voltage meant the motor didn't work at all. Apply caution to your purchase or take an expensive risk!

PS And I hate it because its Nestle - it's DH and I don't use it. I have an in the cup net filter thingy I got from Whittards for about £2.50 which means I use ground coffee of any flavour and just dump the granules, no waste and just wash and reuse. I am no eco warrior ...

topsmart · 17/05/2014 16:25

Does no-one else have an aero press? So easy, quick to clean and you can use whatever ground espresso coffee you fancy - and it travels well too. http://www.aeropresscoffee.co.uk only £20 or summat from amazon. Promise I don't work for them! DH had recommendation by a friend and we now have one at home, one at work and are considering getting one for the campervan Grin

Can't drink watery filter now and nespresso is just overpriced overpackaged shit which takes up worktop space.

numptieseverywhere · 17/05/2014 16:41

I love our Tassimo. There was a debate on Mumsnet not long ago about pod coffee and the general consensus seemed to be that Tassimo is better than Nespresso.

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 16:53

I may or may not have just returned from the Champs-elysees store with a machine Blush and some m&s sausages

If possible i will avoid buying the own-brand pods and recycle all the ones I use. Im so lazy, I have actually gone without drinking coffee regularly in the mornings because my motor skills ain't so hot first thing I can't be bothered to faff with nicer ways of making coffee

In my defence the machine was €59 and which included 16 pods, plus she gave me another 10 free because she felt sorry for my french skills. I didn't know they make vanilla pods!

Yes, i am a selfish consumer and if it makes a jot of difference I will boycott nestle formula if the need to FF ever arises.

Topsmart... Our student DS1 has an aeropress, he loves it (I think he feels rather smug that he "discovered" it Wink, however in retaliation his younger brother has just bought a wooden block filter (Caniadio or something?) which flavours the coffee with wood oil, and has been declared much more stylish (by DS2 at least).
Oh dear I think we may be a family of Caffeine-heads Grin!

Pipbin · 17/05/2014 17:21

The bit of making coffee that a nespresso machine does for you is the easy bit of measuring out the coffee and putting it in the holder. DH is a coffee snob and wouldn't entertain one. We have a delonghi £150 one that does the job ok.
Don't forget that you are stuck buying coffee capsules. If you buy nespresso brand ones then they are very controlling about where you can buy them.
If you buy a machine that takes grounds then you can buy beans from a small local roaster who can trace the origins of the beans and you know the grower got a fair price.

If you don't want to get an espresso machine try an aeropress: www.aeropresscoffee.co.uk

mrssbrown · 17/05/2014 17:24

YABU and lazy - why is a request for reviews on this thread?

mudpiesfortea · 17/05/2014 17:31

Another vote for aero press. We got a Nespresso machine a few years ago but stopped using it after 6 months or so. It was a big hassle.

DH is a coffee snob and obsessed with the aero press. Cheap and fits in a cupboard.

Viviennemary · 17/05/2014 17:34

I don't think I've ever tasted pod coffee. But can't say the idea is very appealing.

Pipbin · 17/05/2014 18:10

Mudpies DH is a huge coffee snob. We went to a coffee evening hosted by a guy who imports, roasts and sells coffee. Really small operation. He uses an aeropress at home.

Sandthorn · 17/05/2014 18:45

Good grief... There's nothing like a nespresso machine to bring out the sanctimonious/pretentious prick in some people! I have one. I'm no connoisseur, but I like the espresso it makes, and it feeds my one-a-day habit without coffee going stale, or having to clean it out all the time, or me finding myself in coffee chains on the way to work.

I have a gadget to empty the pods so they go in the domestic recycling. And while I'm no great fan of Nestle, I recognise that they're not the only shitty company in the world. Those of you having a pop at Nestle-customers... Do you also boycott Sky, and Proctor&Gamble, Amazon, Cafe Nero, Unilever, Orange, RyanAir, pretty much every bank, most of the universities, the entire meat industry, Russia, the gold and diamond industries (etc. etc. etc...)? No? Well then, put down your stones for the sake of your glass house.

KatraAllandra · 17/05/2014 18:48

The issue with recycling the pods is the size, if you just stick them in the regular recycling they will fall through the grader and been sent to landfill. There is also the issue of manufacturing and transporting them which is very energy intensive compared to the same weight of coffee beans or even ready ground coffee.

Bue · 17/05/2014 19:04

I have a Nespresso. I much prefer my single cup porcelain filter. Makes the best coffee around and it costs pennies.

Billygoats · 17/05/2014 19:06

OP I too had never heard of the great nestle hate campaign until a few days ago on here. I thought thy did nice chocolate , I didn't even realise they were involved in baby milk.

Also I hate coffee so I think you are being unreasonable to buy a nespresso unless it makes hot chocolate! Grin

ShevelKnievel · 17/05/2014 19:09

The gaggia website sells reconditioned machines. We've had ours for years and it looked perfect when we got it

hmc · 17/05/2014 19:10

Loving your work there SandThorn Grin

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 17/05/2014 19:15

I love my Bosch version (Tassimo). Actually, it's DH's. I bought it for him as an extra Christmas present, he had no idea, hadn't talked about it etc but we had a big, all singing, all dancing Krups one at the time that was such a faff that it only got used when we had people over. He was a bit Hmm when he opened the pod machine, but he uses it every day (compared to once a month). The convenience is fantastic and the coffee is very nice (for my, clearly prole, tastes).

coffeeinbed · 17/05/2014 19:16

Recycling something does not magically undo all the waste of resources that has gone into the production.

It's unnecessary and pointless.
And makes crap coffee.

Helpys · 17/05/2014 19:21

I am a coffee snob.
And a former Nestlé boycotter who succumbed after tasting Nespresso at friends' houses. The waste and Nestlé angle has always rankled and it's currently in a cupboard mainly because we couldn't face placing another £100 pod order.
So Topsmart and other aeropress aficionados- thank you! I had a lovely aeropress coffee at the hairdresser, came he and tried googling it to no avail, I'm ordering one now.

somewherebecomingrain · 17/05/2014 19:21

Just get a stovetop one. Use cold water - don't cut corners with boiled to get the coffee quicker. Keep it clean - it will sort of self clean for 20 brews or so but then you have to soak it preferably overnight in warm soapy water, the dirtier the better as enzymatic action eats up the old coffee oils. Use good coffee - sainsbo fair trade taste the difference is neither to strong nor too weak IMHO.

This will give you nutty, balmy coffee that slips down like silk, just like neap reap. If it's too strong just add hot water at the end, like coffee cordial.

somewherebecomingrain · 17/05/2014 19:22

Neap reap? Nespresso!
