To buy a Nespresso Machine?

The new inissia one, I can't see many reviews online so i'm unsure how good it is. I wouldn't say I'm a snob but instant just isn't cutting it anymore!
Plus I'm sick of paying €5+ for starbucks I know, I know every few days
I was going to buy myself a new handbag this month but I'd rather have the coffee machine!
Its €99 but with €40 cash back that will have to be sent off for and could take 6-8 weeks to come through. The handbag I wanted was €95.

Thoughts?

I used to make coffee in a cafetiere every day because I don't like instant. I then tried Nespresso coffee at a friend's house and preferred it to either. Now have a Nespresso machine and love the convenience of it. Everyone who has coffee Chez Wowfudge always says how much they like it!

JamJimJam · 17/05/2014 13:32

My dh consigned his coffee pots, beans, grinder, filter papers, cafetierre etc to the garage once he got his Nespresso machine.

Our neighbour has a v swanky built in Miele coffee machine and even she rates our pod coffee as being just as good.

Mitchy1nge · 17/05/2014 13:38

what coffeeinbed said

although I don't think you even need a gaggia, you can brew lovely thick espresso on the stove top in ye olde fashioned way very cheaply and quickly

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 13:38

I have a lovely cafetiere, but it's in storage in the UK Sad I just wanted something relatively faff-free that was decent and works out cheaper than demon Starbucks. I'm hoping it will be an incentive to get up early enough for brekkie in the mornings.

If we could afford a lovely Gaggia machine, i'd go for one of them but i'm trying to compromise on price & quality IYSWIM: cheapish (for nespresso) and nice-ish coffee. We have a filter machine thing-a-ma-bob but it came with the furnished flat we are staying in and even poncy coffee tastes weird.

I am utterly ashamed that after reading the article posted upthread where it says nespresso is the apple of pod-machine coffee, I want it a little bit more Blush

we have a stove top one as well and I always manage to burn the coffee somehow Blush
travailtotravel did you just use an adaptor or change the plug? when we moved from switzerland back to the UK (for just 10 months in the end Hmm ) I re-plugged all of our appliances and they seemed fine. I'll have to ask them if it will work in England too. What will hopefully only be €60 for the machine isn't a very good deal if I can only get 4 months of use out of it though.

but they just make coffee flavoured drinks, not coffee at all, and it's so watery

I try to be polite as a guest in someone's house but really it's hard to drink, I actually find instant coffee more palatable - am not even a fussy coffee person, just have it black as it comes but yuck, you can't do anything with it

EduardoBarcelona · 17/05/2014 13:43

how is this in AIBU? I don't get it

TequilaMockingbirdy · 17/05/2014 13:45

I really want one OP! DH was going to buy us one but we opted for a juicer and a smoothie maker instead. Wish if have gone with this though.

YABU. Get one. Not all the coffee is brilliant but I use nespresso fortissio lungo pods and love them. I tried other machines before resorting to nespresso but they are a faff (especially to clean) and I am lazy.

I have a friend who thought the coffee was rubbish - turned out she was using espresso pods and running two lungo amounts of water through them. Her coffee was disgusting and watery! Showed her how to use the lungo setting, how much milk to use and which pods to buy and now she's a convert like me

LabradorMama · 17/05/2014 13:54

I meant YANBU of course Grin

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 13:56

leggings It's 'proper" coffee as far as I'm aware. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong Grin

Buy a moka. They are cheap and make great coffee. Lots of people use the same stuff, easily available in shops all over the place (even in Spain) called Lavazza Red.

I wouldn't touch any of the pod things, I don't like the coffee they make and they work out so expensive.

My cheap and cheerful stovetop moka pot makes great coffee every time and takes hardly any time at all.

PrimalLass · 17/05/2014 14:03

I have a Senseo machine. It uses coffee 'bags' rather than pods. They go in the compost heap. I could not bear the plastic/metal waste with the other machines.

KoalaDownUnder · 17/05/2014 14:04

Pod coffee is disgusting.
And it's very environmentally damaging - to produce and dispose of the silly pods. It's just a lazy way of making mediocre drink

I agree. Even if you recycle them, the pods still have to be manufactured and then put through the recycling process.

And I refuse to support Nestle.

I have a $250 espresso machine with a milk frother. I can buy Fair Trade beans, or whatever brand I like, and have them freshly ground. And if you learn how to use a cheap espresso machine properly, you can make a MUCH nicer coffee than anything from a pod.

PrimalLass · 17/05/2014 14:05

Or you can use the Senseo bags in a normal espresso machine.

PeachyParisian · 17/05/2014 14:22

Koala How on earth do you manage to completely avoid Nestle? They're everywhere.

max budget at the moment really is €100 because I can't justify reallocating other money for "luxury item"

I guess what i'd like to know is:
For the quality of coffee, ease of use, style of machine etc is the Nespresso Inissia good value for money?

OP posts:
rednellie · 17/05/2014 14:29

I think it's unreasonable to not even attempt to avoid Nestle. They are awful.

Theodorous · 17/05/2014 14:42

I actively buy Nestle because I think the boycott is a load of smug middle class bloocks.

MarieJeanne · 17/05/2014 14:52

I am in France and have a nespresso pixie which I love though I am not a great coffee connoisseur.
You can buy coffee pods L'or express by la maison du café which are compatible in most supermarkets
I like being able to offer a selection of different coffees including decaff at dinner parties

Nomama · 17/05/2014 14:53

Good for you, Theodorous. Really, good for you!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 17/05/2014 14:58

Yabvvvu.

Coffee pods and massively expensive. That's why they sell the machines so cheaply, to suck you in to their evil coffee pod empireShock!

Whole bean is the way to go! Even as a student I had a little grinder and an over-the-cup filter thing... Now I have a decent (not hugely expensive) machine that will grind, filter an brew our coffee (with a timer for that essential first morning cup).

It is far cheaper to run a coffee machine with real beans (especially if you buy from Costco), than to buy pods.

Hulababy · 17/05/2014 14:59

Having tried various pod coffees and also some bean coffee machines we got a Nespresso. Was by far the better choice in our experience.

The coffee shouldn't taste watery at all if made properly.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 17/05/2014 15:02

And while you are in Costco buying a sack of columbian, you can pick up an expensive coffee machine for 1/2 the price you'll get it anywhere else (they always have at least a couple) Wink.

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 17/05/2014 15:05

I have a nespresso. The basic magimix one. Had it for a few years, but I just wanted to check that I was making the coffee properly! We don't drink espresso, so the way I make a pod coffee is to use the machine to make a short espresso (the smallest size) and then top up with water and cold milk, or just with or hot milk. Am I using it to its max?!
