New health scare saying fruit juice is as bad as fizzy pop, sorry but what next only half an apple a day as one apple is too much sugar!

But they are right!

It's not vilification it's the truth.....

Pleasejustgo · 15/05/2014 08:02

It's true.

Sirzy · 15/05/2014 08:02

What joules said.

It is very sugary. DS likes a bit off juice but only has one glass a day with a meal

Betrayedbutsurvived · 15/05/2014 08:03

What everyone else said.

WooWooOwl · 15/05/2014 08:04

This isn't new.

I think the problem is that drinking big glasses of orange juice does mean an intake of a huge amount of sugar, it's fine if you're only drinking a little glass, but the juice of one orange doesn't amount to very much. Having fruit as juice does concentrate the sugar, and it takes away some of the fibre that would be present if you ate the fruit.

2cats2many · 15/05/2014 08:05

I agree with the warning s too. My children only get it as a treat.

Momonga · 15/05/2014 08:06

It's true. Sugary, acidy etc;

Fortunately, I hate orange juice, so not a problem for me to deal with!

Nocomet · 15/05/2014 08:09

Everything in moderation, especially food related newspaper articles.

Sleepwhenidie · 15/05/2014 08:12

'New health scare'...have you been living in a cave for several years Confused?

NeverendingPotato · 15/05/2014 08:13

I blame this.

It is sugary, but it also contains goodness. The problem with fizzy pop is that ALL it contains is sugar and bad things. I have a glass a day of fruit juice, and my DS has a baby sized one - our teeth are fine.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/05/2014 08:18

Drinking a glass of oj with a meal helps you to absorb the iron in the meal. Small glass, use a straw.

Cushioney · 15/05/2014 08:20

The acid in the juice attacks teeth

CuntBiscuit · 15/05/2014 08:20

Juice is basically liquid sugar with none of the fibre of the real fruit. Anyone would find it difficult to eat 15 oranges, but you can drink more than that in a couple of glasses of juice.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 15/05/2014 18:00

But naturally occurring fruit sugar (fructose?) is a lot less harmful than eg processed white sugar, isn't it?

SecretNutellaFix · 15/05/2014 18:01

As with everything, moderation is the key.

More than one glass a day is excessive. Only one glass a day can count towards your fruit/veg target anyway, no matter how many you drink.

profplump · 15/05/2014 18:05

When I was young (many years ago), fruit juice was served in a shot sized glass with breakfast. It is a modern thing (probably because it takes SOOO many oranges which were not available back then) to have regular standard sized glasses of fruit juice. Now the evidence suggests an increased risk of diabetes from drinking juice. Nobody made that up. It's evidence based medicine. The alternative is not, um, sugar, so but perhaps water.

kali110 · 15/05/2014 18:06

Its true.i was a real fruit and juice addict.had too have two fillings because of it.

grovel · 15/05/2014 18:10

Half a glass every day. The other half of the glass is needed for the champagne.

glowfrog · 15/05/2014 18:19

The trouble with OJ is that once you've had your one glass and full count of Vit C, you are only drinking sugar - without the fibre etc of the fruit.

RandomInternetStranger · 15/05/2014 18:20

I get the worry about the sugar in juice, what I don't get is the "logic" some mothers are using that this now means squash or pop better than juice.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 15/05/2014 18:20

Juice should be drunk along with food, not by itself

& you shouldn't brush your teeth for at least 30 mins after drinking it as that really will erode the enamel

PersonOfInterest · 15/05/2014 18:32

There are still people going to places like 'juice' (think thats what its called) and getting 27 oranges, 12 apples and a dash of wheat grass pulped into a pint sized container, paying £6 and thinking that it is 'healthy'. Its a cup of sugar. There needs to be more awareness of this.

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 15/05/2014 18:47

Sugar is sugar...one rype is no healthier than any other.

LostMyPants · 15/05/2014 18:49

I had to buy some today as DD is terribly constipated and I'm at the stage of being willing to try anything. DD spat it everywhere, DS is delighted at getting a special treat. Even I had mine watered down. It's just too unhealthy otherwise.
