I'm a strawberry Xenophobe. You'll just have to accept it.

British strawberries taste nicer. There, I've said it. I don't know why they do, but they do.

My name is Honeydragon and I'm a soft fruit bigot. Sad

I had some delicious Spanish strawberries yesterday. I don't mind boosting the Spanish economy a bit until I can buy decent British strawberries.

HoneyDragon · 09/05/2014 15:46

Oh god yes, I buy mine from a local asparagus farm it's lovely.

Shit, I'm a vegetable bigot too Shock

Shatners, British ones in Tesco at £2 a punnet

Me too. Just had my first punnet of the season.

Yum.

Same here. Ate a punnet of British strawberries bought from Morrisons yesterday.

JustAboutAdeqeuate · 09/05/2014 15:47

Apples and tomatoes as well. I lifted some cherry tomatoes in the supermarket, smelt of nothing. Lifted some Essex cherry tomatoes, smelt delicious through the packaging. I won't even bother with non - English strawberries.

Very excited about the pick your own opening for the season soon :)

EatDessertFirst · 09/05/2014 15:49

Another fruit/veg bigot over here!!

British always tastes better here. Oranges/peaches are way better in Spain.

HoneyDragon · 09/05/2014 15:50

See. And we thought we were all tolerant and embracing folk. Till it comes to our 5/6/7/whateverthefuck a day.

Agree that peaches are only properly properly nice when consumed in furrin parts.

Oranges taste a million times better in Italy. I nearly fainted with joy eating some oranges I bought from a small crappy Italian minimart.

Mintyy · 09/05/2014 15:52

I'll never knowingly eat a forrin strawberry. Except, perhaps, if I'm in forrinland.

That is because everyone keeps the best for themselves. Was recently in China and the strawberries were the best I've ever tasted. They send the crappy fruit abroad.

Agree that fruit and veg in Italy taste better than anything.

Xenophobia is a fear of people who are different to yourself......not sure if it describes favouring one fruits origin to another...

JustAboutAdeqeuate · 09/05/2014 15:56

:) coil took me a minute to figure out what you meant! I lifted up the packet and put it down again. Couldn't have shoved tomatoes in my pockets if I'd wanted - it seems to be the law that maternity clothes are devoid of pockets. Perhaps because of an outbreak of pregnant woman tomato stealing insanity.

Whitewhine · 09/05/2014 15:58

Scottish strawberries & raspberries are the best! Love when they come into season, even better going to a PYO farm and eating as many as you can!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2014 16:01

The best strawberries I've ever had were American ... when I lived in the US.

British strawberries at this time of year really aren't that great though - they're mostly polytunnel Elsantas. You need to wait till later in the year for better varieties which have had longer day lengths. Scottish strawbs can beat English for this reason. If they vote for independence, I'll happily eat those furrin berries.

emotionsecho · 09/05/2014 16:01

Another British Strawberry xenophobe here, they are definitely the best. Spanish and American ones just don't come close.

HoneyDragon · 09/05/2014 16:01

Well in that case I am definitely a Xenophobe because Sam Brick scares the shit out of me.

IdealistAndProudOfIt · 09/05/2014 16:22

Can't stand any shop-bought strawberries tbh, don't care where they come from they all taste of nothing.

It's really worthwhile trying to grow your own if you have any space whatsoever! The taste is fantastic. My favourite variety so far though is 'Cambridge favourite' which is a British variety.

frogslegs35 · 09/05/2014 16:22

The strawbs I grow in my British garden are the best in the world. On any planet. In any universe :)
If that makes me a xenophobe - so be it.

ZingWatermelon · 09/05/2014 16:30

Watermelons, peaches, apricots - all crap compared to Hungarian ones.

BabCNesbitt · 09/05/2014 16:34

Yep, ErrolTheDragon, the strawberries I've had here in the US are better than any UK ones I've ever tried. US apples, though, are absolutely woeful. Looking forward to proper Bramley apple pies when I get back Smile
