Absolutely appalling. And it will have an effect on the NHS. Poorer people are bashed for being poor.. and bashed for being overweight. Why do I have a feeling its only going to get worse. Sad Angry

tower I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that some people are more intent on telling people they are stupid and/or irresponsible, scoring points and making people feel more shit than they already do than trying to learn and consider why people do what they do. I struggle to hang about supermarkets at 7:30 too, I'm usually still at work.

If people really want things to improve rather than being smug and feeling superior they must first stop lecturing and saying or implying people are stupid is at best useless and at worst cruel and counter productive. The first stage in effective change is taking time to understand why an individual does what they do (there are a multitude of possible reasons). The second stage is to start to deal with the causes not the symptoms.

telly on Brighthouse makes no sense, unless you realise that it's the main entertainment source and that people want to feel they can have at least one nice thing, don't want to be embarrassed by their TV, and don't want to look poor.

This is the fundamental belief that needs to change. That, and reinstating cooking lessons at school for everyone.

iwantsun · 02/05/2014 13:52

I can eat cheap processed carbs for dinner and still not eat again until my usual 'breakfast time', which is around 11am the next day

Wonderful for you but not the case for most people who eat cheap processed crappy carbs

iwantsun · 02/05/2014 13:57

But I do have a problem with people who are able to eat whatever crap they want to (and do) and are just blessed with a high metabolism

Best to focus on yourself rather than have a problem with others

adsy · 02/05/2014 13:59

dont want tobe embarassed by their tv wtfis that meant tomean? Do people visit friends houses and point and jeer if their tv is old?

AwfulMaureen · 02/05/2014 14:01

SoVery do you drive? That really makes a massive difference. I got a bike because I have joint issues and can't walk or run far...bikes keep the weight off my joints and I now cycle about 50 miles a week.....I started out at about 3 a week!

AwfulMaureen · 02/05/2014 14:04

Adsy in deprived social areas, one of the WORST things is to "look poor" and to dress badly or not have "good stuff".

It's ok for me...as a professional (on a very low income) but who mixes with middle class people and lives in a middle class area to have a second hand sofa and a shit tv....my friends won't judge...they see it as sensible that I don't get into debt and buy what I can't afford.

But if you already live in a crap area, have a crap school for your DC and no income then it's a matter of pride...it's a mind set which HAS to be changed though, I do agree with that....but it's a difficult one to get to the root of.

I grew up in a working class family, on an estate where this mindset prevailed and it's taken me 40 years to escape it.

uselessidiot · 02/05/2014 14:11

Sadly adsy some do. I've received stick for my TV. From one side for it being old and not fancy enough and for having a TV at all from the other.

iwantsun · 02/05/2014 14:18

So maybe some people would rather have a cool tv and feed their kids crappy 15p biscuits instead of healthy fresh food?

AwfulMaureen · 02/05/2014 14:19

Yes Iwant they would....but that's no reason to sneer. It's a deeply ingrained mindset.

iwantsun · 02/05/2014 14:25

I am not sneering, I have a crappy old mobile. Would rather stick with that and make sure my DC have fresh fruit and veg

Some people shouldn't be parents if they have such an awful mindset. Maybe they could keep up with everyone better if they didn't have kids at all and get an even better TV then they can be really proud that they have pleased people who don't matter whatsoever

AwfulMaureen · 02/05/2014 14:26

Iwant that is a dangerous thought process. It's close to the way Nazis think.

And if you feel that is over the top then you need to learn more about ethics.

Ignorance is not a reason to be told you should not have children.

It doesn't have to be complicated though, it is fairly simple. Eat crap, feel like crap

Darkesteyes · 02/05/2014 15:05

Wonder how this bloke is supposed to manage to eat healthily after losing a chunk of his income for having the temerity to have cancer Hmm

Knowing what constitutes a healthy diet is fairly simple.

However an individual could have the cooking skills of a master chef and the dietary knowledge of a dietitian yet that wouldn't be worth a jot if they're facing some sort of combination of the following:

No cooker, no fridge, no freezer, no money for the meter for energy to cook, not enough money to buy the ingredients, no access or restricted access to decent food shops, no kitchen, B&b rules where they're not allowed food in their rooms, not even basic pots and cooking utensils etc. This is why people say it's complicated.

For example if I only end up with a pound for good and power for a week I'm not actually going to be that healthy with a bag of carrots either. Not enough volume or variety.

GarlicMaybeNot · 02/05/2014 15:20

There is such food poverty here, I am not sure why. Lack of pride? lack of ingredients? lack of culinary tradition?

Not lack of pride.
Not lack of 'ingredients', unless you really meant foreign ingredients.
Not lack of culinary tradition - how insulting.

There is such food poverty here because we fail to make sure our citizens have enough money to live on.
It really is that simple.

From the most recent Government figures:

Median equivalised net household income in 2011/12 was £367 per week, After Housing Costs (AHC).
Income inequality remained reasonably level between 2010/11 and 2011/12. This is because the income of households fell by broadly similar amounts.

But households in the lowest quintiles fell by more than those in the highest quintiles.
The higher falls in the bottom quintiles' AHC income are driven by Housing support not rising in line with housing costs.

Around two-thirds of individuals had an equivalised household income that was less than the national mean.
The presence of substantial numbers of individuals with relatively high incomes results in a skewed distribution and a large difference between the overall mean and the median.

Translation:
Two out of five UK households have less than the national average to live on after housing costs.
The poorest households are suffering greater losses than any others; this is because housing support has been reduced.
300,000 people have less than £100 a week to live on.

The situation is getting rapidly worse since those figures were done. Housing support has failed to keep pace with rent increases, various other benefits have been cut, numbers of welfare dependents are increasing and the wealth gap is increasing.

The government is re-defining poverty (out of line with world standards) to make it look as if fewer people - particularly children - are living in absolute poverty. The horrific new workfare scheme is being pushed forwards to hide the continuing surge in unemployment.

We are a rich country. We can afford to support our underprivileged.
