to think my friend has a good argument for refusing to attend this job interview?

She's going anyway because even though she argued until she was in floods of tears, the job centre have told her that if she does not she'll have her benefits taken away.

She's strictly vegan and has been since her mid teens - she's now in her late 30s. She won't even wear leather shoes. They are sending her to be interviewed for a job in an abattoir Shock Normally I'd say if people can work they should but surely she's got a good argument for not going for this job?

What on earth can she do? Will she be sanctioned if she lets them know her views during the interview and does her best not to get the job?

Yay! Grin that's such good news!

(& why was the poor woman being forced into going to factory floor/ abattoir floor jobs when she had skills for a completely different job? I know times are hard but that strikes me as such a waste)

PartialFancy · 30/04/2014 19:09

Oh that's fantastic! So pleased for her!

PartialFancy · 30/04/2014 19:13

And pleased for the employer that such an experienced PA was available to do their specific skilled job, rather than too busy demonstrating her moral fibre doing something she was crap at.

Trillions · 30/04/2014 19:13

Brilliant. Also shows that going to the interview was the right thing to do! You never know :)

HerRoyalNotness · 30/04/2014 19:17

Oh well done, that's great news for her!

mummytime · 30/04/2014 19:34

I am so pleased for your friend!

Booboostoo · 30/04/2014 20:09

Brilliant outcome!

TeacupDrama · 30/04/2014 21:14

pleased for your friend but once she has definitely got the job she should lodge formal complainant about job centre advisor as they were acting illegally

JCP do have targets for sanctions and when helping a friend who had worked for past 25 years so hardly work-shy I rapidly found out a lot of JCP advisors do not know what is in the guidance or deliberately mislead the public as to what they are required to do by putting things in JSA agreement which they say are legal requirements when actually they are not and relying on the fact that 98% of claimants will not go to gov.uk site to read the whole 200-300 pages of the act of parliament to check accuracy

I am a dentist we would never advertise for a dental nurse with JCP as you would be inundated with applications from applicants unqualified not in training not registered with GDC etc, no point in stating explicitly that qualification is required there will still be applications from people totally unsuitable when you call them the story is practically always he same I have to apply for x number of jobs per week so though i know i'm unsuitable i have to do please tell them i applied if they enquire etc etc

UncleT · 30/04/2014 23:55

Very good outcome.

As for those of you who still think a committed vegan should be made to work in an abattoir - you're all fucking nuts, no ifs or buts.

Ruushii · 01/05/2014 00:01

Ah what a good update Grin

Caitlin17 · 01/05/2014 00:02

The employers sound very sensible too in raising the issue.

They probably get fed up of being sent unsuitable candidates.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/05/2014 00:08

That's wonderful news I'm really pleased she's got a great outcome

wow I know exactly what a sanction is I used to work for the DWP

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/05/2014 00:13

And fwiw I now get incredibly pissed off dealing with job applications from people who have been forced to apply and are usually embarrassed to apply for a job that they are neither qualified or suitable for through fear of sanction.

Most recently being about 35 men forced to apply for a job in a woman's refuge

Darkesteyes · 01/05/2014 00:36

needsasock that is bloody ridiculous.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/05/2014 00:48

Indeed but does it stop them, nope

Psycobabble · 01/05/2014 00:50

Great outcome !

Deathraystare · 01/05/2014 08:18

Need a soc/darkesteyes - notonly bloody ridicuolous but imagine if the refuge was 'forced' to take a man on????!!

Excellent, and shows that you should always grab opportunities (eg interviews) even if you don;t expect much to come of them. It's good the jobcentre put her under pressure to go.

UncleT but she IS going to work in an abattoir Confused and is happy about it.

mummytime · 01/05/2014 08:50

NeedsAsockamnesty and Teacup - have you thought of telling your Mp what you have said here? My MP is very good at following up on email on subjects like this (despite being a Tory).

fascicle · 01/05/2014 09:21

Have I misunderstood? OP, your vegan friend was distraught and in tears at the prospect of being forced to attend an interview for a production line job at an abbatoir, and now she is delighted to be offered a job at the abbatoir's offices instead? I don't get it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/05/2014 09:22

Yes that sounds a bit unlike any vegan I have ever known tbh.

PartialFancy · 01/05/2014 09:30

And there we have it.^^

Damned if she doesn't. Damned if she does.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/05/2014 09:37

Not damning anyone.

Just err surprised by this.

KissesBreakingWave · 01/05/2014 10:04

Needsasock, our local refuge could do with being clearer about it though. They were advertising for an admin post, a job I could do one handed with my eyes shut while farting tunes, and make a ripping job of if I actually paid attention, and I was half way through filling out the paperwork before I got to the women-only part. (I'd sort of assumed it was back office, away from the actual refuge bit, up to then). I endured nearly fifteen seconds of mild irritation!

I don't doubt they got sent a load of blokes from the job centre, though.
