Nursery went home and left dd!

lookingfortheanswer · 28/04/2014 18:36

Posting here for traffic, I don't have an aibu.

Went to pick up dd from nursery this afternoon and found the whole place locked up and nobody there. After frantically calling, banging on doors, checking nobody else had picked her up we managed to contact the neighbouring school. The staff who were still there were amazing, helped us to get into the building where we found dd on the toilet, on her own, lights off and doors closed, staff gone home. It took us half an hour to get in so she was there at least that long. She was obviously very upset but is now home and fine and drinking lemonade as a treat while I try to stop shaking.

Obviously this is a huge safeguarding issue and there is no way she is going back. The head of the neighbouring school has been in touch and is organising a meeting for the morning.

Any advice on where to go from here, who to complain to? Should we get legal advice? I am so so angry!

The op has posted a good few times hen - the thread is very fast moving. and troll hunting isn't allowed

NothingMoreScaryThanAHairyMary · 28/04/2014 21:04

I think the head gas responsibilities under safeguarding, a child was at risk she has to report it.

( however when the dust settles chocolates would be nice)

Look after yourself tonight OP the shock will set in if it already hasn't.

BrianTheMole · 28/04/2014 21:05

Of course its fine. It makes me happy to see them so happy. Its nice to get off home early. Not in the ops case though.

hatgirl · 28/04/2014 21:05

HenI5 I count at least 8 updates from the OP Hmm

You can highlight the OP's posts by changing your settings.

I suggest doing that before commenting on the OP's whereabouts next time.

clam · 28/04/2014 21:05

HenI5 The OP has posted several times - alter your settings to highlight those posts. It helps avoid making stupid insinuations confusion.

My classroom has windows. All those windows, however, have blackout blinds, which are closed every day when I leave the building. The classroom is therefore dark.

icanneverremember · 28/04/2014 21:05

Why are people so quick to assume you would call 999? The fact is you have NO IDEA how you would react unless you actually faced this situation. I probably wouldn't have called 999 because I would be telling myself that there's a reasonable explaination eg someone was inside with her.

ICanSeeTheSun · 28/04/2014 21:07

I did a placement in a private nursery, some evening they went home early but other nights went late.

The owner there for didn't dock wages for going home early or didn't pay overtime.

OK OK.

Actually wise ones my settings already highlight the OP's posts which is why I said what I said.

The OP is highlighted and the one immediately after my post at 21.00.
I have no idea why other posts, which I haven't spotted, are not highlighted in the same manner.

I have refreshed twice and that is still what's appearing on my screen.

clam · 28/04/2014 21:11

Who is usually left on duty when you pick up at your usual time? Is it common practice for a couple of nursery nurses to be there, or is the Nursery Manager always there?

Just wondering how on earth this could have happened. I mean, it's clearly a monumental mistake, but.... Jesus!! I bet there are some people shitting themselves this evening, and rightly so!

Hope you get some resolution tomorrow. Although I can't see what they can possibly say that is going to make you feel any better. The main thing is, I suppose, that procedures are massively tightened up so this can never happen again.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 28/04/2014 21:14

Glad that the head has already contacted a lot of the right people.

HenI5 · 28/04/2014 21:15

Oh and Clam what stupid insinuations did you actually understand from what I posted? Hmm

From other posts I've read I don't see how asking for more information before commenting could possibly be considered as troll hunting Angry

clam · 28/04/2014 21:15

Well, she more than anyone will realise the implications of such a cock-up. This is every Head's nightmare.

mrsbucketxx · 28/04/2014 21:16

Really shocked reading this you should name and shame here.

Keep us posted.

TheScience · 28/04/2014 21:16

I don't think 999 would be my first reaction. I'd try to get in touch with someone from the nursery, try the school next door to see if they were there/knew anything, try to get into the nursery building to see if staff were still there but didn't hear the door etc.

AreWeThereYeti · 28/04/2014 21:17

I don't think the fact that a child could get forgotten was what the troll hunters were questioning. I think it was that the OP didn't call the police even though it took half an hour to get her DD out and that she got home and posted on MN so quickly.

clam · 28/04/2014 21:17

The insinuation that it was somehow suspicious or odd that the OP had only posted the once and then buggered off. That's a common question levelled at trolls.

Sigyn · 28/04/2014 21:17

My guess is that you'd assume, in this situation, that there was an adult in the building but for some reason hadn't heard the door. So to keep knocking and ultimately break in would make sense.

FWIW it occurs to me that when my kids were in nursery we generally had a list of numbers for the nursery. We wouldn't have had home numbers for the staff or anything. I actually don't know what I'd have done in that situation.

clam · 28/04/2014 21:18

Arewethereyet Lots of people have said they wouldn't have called the police at that point.

Sigyn · 28/04/2014 21:18

I also agree that my first thought would be that they'd all gone over to the school or something. I'd assume something very rational had happened and I'd lost a letter or something.

If anyone is thinking this is a troll, my guess is that this is such a bloody huge cock up that we have a very good chance of seeing this story on, at least, regional news.

AreWeThereYeti · 28/04/2014 21:21

sgyn I agree with you. I was saying why I thought other people had been troll hunting.

trulymadlyme · 28/04/2014 21:22

I work in wrap around care and staff are paid until 5.30. Most evenings at least one parent is late and therefore two members of staff are required to stay beyond their official finishing time. If all children are collected early (not often); staff go home early.
