to wonder why the SNP aren't getting the same bashing that UKIP are?

I'm not a political expert by any means and I know there has been a lot of discussion on both topics here.

But both these parties have the same ultimate aim - independence for their countries. Why is no-one calling SNP supporters racist? Not that I think they should be - just curious about the apparent double standard.

Merrymouse, could you please clarify:
' "Why is no-one calling SNP supporters racist?": clearly they are.'

Do you mean we are being called racist or that we are racist?

merrymouse · 25/04/2014 20:29

SNP supporters are being called racist.

(Although I don't think anybody is calling all SNP supporters racist, just some of the SNP supporters they have met).

For full disclosure I have never knowingly met an SNP supporter or a UKIP supporterin real life. For comparison I know two active members each of the lib dems, conservatives and Labour Party (excluding canvassers). They are all approaching or over 70.

merrymouse · 25/04/2014 20:36

Although I don't think you can really call the Scottish and English different races.

Caitlin17 · 25/04/2014 20:38

Racism is not be tolerated in the SNP .It is not a racist party although I think in the past there has been rudeness about English people under the assumption that if you're English and white it's not racism but just robust banter and at worse rudeness. I don't think that applies now.

I suppose as a party they are more fervent than others. I can't get worked up about being "Scottish" and don't feel oppressed by London or Westminster so am largely bemused and unmoved by their passion.

I do find certain aspects cringeworthy and I suppose I resent having "Scottishness" thrust upon me.

kinkytoes · 25/04/2014 22:31

Fascinating debate and yes I think the answer to my original question has most definitely been answered. I feel much more informed about the Scottish referendum now and will be following as much coverage as I can find here (down south) Wink

Thanks again MN.

Hi Kinkytoes glad you found it informative! Grin

just wanted to mention a couple of other things:
for the people who can't stand Alex Salmond - probably the quickest way to get rid of him is to vote 'yes' - then he doesn't have a job...

I'm quite surprised that Scottish Labour and the Scottish Conservatives don't see that with a 'yes' vote they may be able to get back to what their parties were all about. Hell, the tories might even be represented. Liberals too, if anyone's forgiven them...

For anyone on the outside: I'm really intrigued at all this unhinged ranting that people (allegedly!) have on their Facebooks. I have Scottish friends voting yes & no. I have rUK friends - some interested, some not: rest of world friends... not quite featured. No ranting, no frothing no nothing.

BigBoobiedBertha · 26/04/2014 09:28

Surely he is gone if there is a no vote too? His party will see him as a failure and there won't be another referendum for years, if ever. Quite a lot of leaders get the boot if they lose a vote and by the standards of the SNP this will be a pretty big one to loses.

If I had the vote I wouldn't be voting yes to get rid of him, personally. Really it is a reason for not voting with personalities isn't it? You can't really know how it will pan out for him.

TheBogQueen · 26/04/2014 09:37

Apparently if there is a 'Yes' vote, David Cameron will resign...no bigger incentive guys..

Tardigrade · 26/04/2014 11:39

BigBoobiedBertha I'm quite surprised that people think that if there's a 'No' majority then everything will go back to the status quo. I would not be the least bit surprised if Cameron has a 'Devo Max' plan ready to whip out at the last minute to try & sway some of the Yes voters.

Whatever the result - there's a substantial chunk of the population that wants more power for Holyrood. That's not going to change. I don't think it will be seen as a failure if there's a No vote as some of it will be due to their own success - there is generally a lot of satisfaction with this government - especially compared to Westminster.

I don't think it should be about personalities, but the No voters keep ranting on about Alex Salmond...

SantanaLopez · 26/04/2014 11:44

As do the Yes voters and the big bad Tories. See: 'Apparently if there is a 'Yes' vote, David Cameron will resign...no bigger incentive guys..'

It's natural that it comes down to personalities, it's a big part of politics.

TheBogQueen · 26/04/2014 11:47

IOt's not just about personalities - it's policies as well.

Caitlin17 · 26/04/2014 11:48

The argument that a yes vote gets rid of Salmond is very weak. A no vote however will for reasons stated above.

One thing which really annoys me about the SNP is the inability whether real or feigned to accept being British and part of the UK does mean something to some people who live in Scotland.

aermingers · 26/04/2014 11:53

Because they are a left wing party who conform to all the left wing sacred cows. Which doesn't include toleration and for people who's political views differ from your own.

The left wing try and intimidate, threaten and shame anybody who doesn't conform to their agenda. The SNP do so there is no need for them to be on the receiving end of this sort of behaviour.

SantanaLopez · 26/04/2014 11:55

The Tories seem less criticised for their policies (bedroom tax being the only one most people can mentioned) than they are for their existence!

One thing that really annoys me about the SNP is how I keep ending up defending the bloody Tories...

TheBogQueen · 26/04/2014 11:56

Have you read the DM recently? Tried being a single parent, in recept of benefits, an asylum seeker, Polish or (horror) Bulgarian?

I don't think the right wing are some sort of oppressed group. In the UK or in Scotland

aermingers · 26/04/2014 12:03

That's exactly the sort of thing I mean BogQueen, thanks for demonstrating.

TheBogQueen · 26/04/2014 12:06

If yu think my comment was threatening, shaming or discriminatory then you must be a very delicate flower indeed Hmm

Tardigrade · 26/04/2014 12:11

Aermingers I think you're definitely in the running for the 'sweeping generalizations' award Grin

Igggi · 26/04/2014 12:12

How can anyone be 'shamed' if they aren't doing something selfish or otherwise wrong? Confused
I don't see how left wing views could shame anyone if they weren't aware that their own views were morally lacking...

tobiasfunke · 26/04/2014 12:18

This should part of the Yes campaign

TheBogQueen · 26/04/2014 12:23

By he way if you want a really, really good laugh read Dominic Lawson in today's Daily Mail who did some testing investigative journalism by dragging his arse out of Soho House and bothering three people trying to have a quiet drink in a pub in Glasgow:

Here's a flavour

"For a moment I thought I had gone too far — it probably isn’t wise for a Londoner in a Glasgow bar to suggest even in jest that the Scots on their own would be no better off than Red Indians."

I mean fucking hell.

SantanaLopez · 26/04/2014 12:26

It's best not to read the Daily Mail at all BogQueen.
