to completely give up on wearing bras?

Bigredsevs · 23/04/2014 18:27

It started innocently enough; I would skip wearing bras if I was going on a flight, or long car ride, but now I can't seem to persuade myself to wear them at all!

I am not flat chested (36D, kind of 'wide based' if that makes any sense..). I am pretty sure that ianbu but every so often I feel unsure, mostly because of peoples reaction... my sister is appalled and her boobs are much smaller! I increasingly feel like I shouldn't have to wear a surgical support to change/camouflage the shape of my breasts every day of life.. and that men's people's reaction to the outline of my breasts through clothing is their problem... I do get anxious about whether it is unprofessional for work though, but then I get angry about how the fact that they are so over-sexualised that I feel responsible.

I would wear one if I was in a 'who has the nicest shaped boobs?' competition but am i being unreasonable to give up on wearing one for daily life?

p.s. walking, jumping, doing up and down stairs felt weird and wibbly at first, but normal now :)

Sheherazade in my experience women are ALWAYS remembered for their looks, good or bad.

AwfulMaureen · 23/04/2014 23:08

AllHail but were her shirts actually see-through? Or could you just see the shape of them? Don't you feel that way about people's arses in tight trousers?

What's the diff?

AwfulMaureen · 23/04/2014 23:09

BlackCats exactly.

"Isn't that the gorgeous looking woman with red hair?"

"Wasn't she the fat girl with the big feet?"

"Oh yes, I remember her...the tiny one with the huge arse."

AwfulMaureen · 23/04/2014 23:11

AllHail sorry just noticed you feel SORRY for women with no bra! Grin Grin Why? I feel sorry for those who feel they need to hide and change their shape!

Also....I'd just like to ask again...was that woman...the one who wore no bra...was she always in actually see-through tops? And don't you feel the same way about arses in tight trousers? That it's a bit distasteful?

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 23/04/2014 23:58

2blackcats - yes, that's absolutely true, but I would rather not be remembered for the size and colour of my areolae. If they said "the fat ginger one with the wonky eye," that would be an accurate (if unflattering) description of me. They could easily have said of this woman, the one with the fabulous hair, long legs etc etc, but no, her swinging tits were all that anyone remembered (along with how red the office junior used to go when she bent over him to explain something, with her tits hanging in his face).

AwfulMaureen · 24/04/2014 00:04

Why would her tits be hanging in his face? Mine don't. I wear normal clothing not low cut, see-through things. Also, why would my nipple colour be visible?

I think the odd woman might wear see through and low cut things with no bra...that's unusual. Normally, women like me just wear a t shirt or a jumper!

EBearhug · 24/04/2014 00:17

If her tits were close enough to hang in her face, that suggests to me she is a bit close anyway. There aren't many colleagues I'd be comfortable with that close, with or without tits.

squoosh · 24/04/2014 00:20

Your boobs, your choice.

Personally I love bras. They free me to run, jump and dance in comfort. I can't do any these things very easily in a braless state. I would far more restricted if my breasts roamed free, running for a bus would be agony!

Whoever invented the bra, I salute you.

AwfulMaureen · 24/04/2014 00:36

Well that's the important thing Squoosh they help some people.

sykadelic · 24/04/2014 00:36

You might not think it's obvious but I'm sure it is.

I personally would never go braless, if I were your size (which is considerably smaller than myself), for the following reasons:

  1. I hate my boobs touching my skin. It's hot and sweaty and sticky
  2. It makes running difficult
  3. It's bad for the ligaments in your breast and will result in premature drooping
  4. I don't need any more attention on my boobs than I already get
  5. It looks horrible.

If you want to do it though, that's up to you. I never would though. I do around home, but wouldn't leave the house without one on unless it's an emergency.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 00:56

If you're used to wearing a bra and you get a backache, or otherwise physically uncomfortable, when not wearing one, it's because your muscles aren't as well developed as they should be. Because of wearing a bra. It's the bra, not the boobs, causing the trouble.

I'm a 28DDD/F and 42 years old and hardly ever wear a bra. My boobs are pretty much my standout feature, for better or worse, whether I'm wearing a bra or not. If you judge me for my appearance, whatever I'm wearing or not wearing, then I will judge you for being judgmental and shallow - and your opinions will become less relevant to me because of it. As the saying goes, 'the people who matter don't mind and the people who mind don't matter'.
Having said that, I don't work; if I worked in a place where a bra was part of the 'uniform' then I would wear one. I also wear one when I get dressed up, because that's when I'm likely to show off my cleavage and without a bra I don't really have any.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 00:58

Incidentally - some of us can't run, jump, etc. without our boobs bouncing around and getting uncomfortable even with a bra on. I've learnt to just tuck an arm over mine if I'm moving fastish. Wink

GarlicAprilShowers · 24/04/2014 02:10

I'm a 28DDD/F

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 02:14

Blush That should have read 38DDD/F I'd be envious as well. Blush

GarlicAprilShowers · 24/04/2014 02:17

I think you were unnecessarily sweeping with your other comments, though, Ninja. Everybody's made differently. You seem to have been gifted with particularly dense breast tissue & Cooper's ligaments, hence why your boobs are your 'stand-out feature'. They can't be strengthened with exercise, it's just what you get.

GarlicAprilShowers · 24/04/2014 02:18

Hahaha!! Thanks :) Cheered me up no end.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 02:31

Nah, it's just about sheer size. It's my tummy that hold them up most of the time anyway.
I get more comments about not wearing a bra if I am wearing one, funnily enough.

nooka · 24/04/2014 02:34

I never wear a bra, I just find them incredibly uncomfortable, whether fitted by expert staff or with the help of the MN bra interventionists. I just hate the constraint of the strap around my ribs. I am a C old style or a DD new style so not particularly big, but not tiny either. I do prefer my profile with a bra on but after half an hour or so I just have to take it off. dd tells me I should just get used to feeling strapped in but frankly I really don't see why I should.

If it bothers my work colleagues, then tough really.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 02:34

holds.
My keyboard is full of mistakes today. I usually proofread better than this.

GarlicAprilShowers · 24/04/2014 03:17

Don't deny it, you're typing with your boobs.

GarlicAprilShowers · 24/04/2014 03:25

My bra interventions (plural) haven't worked, either, nooka. I was more comfortable in the ones that were too big around the chest, but, to be fair, they weren't providing much nork support. I imagine one can get a perfectly-fitting, supportive & comfy bra somewhere. I imagine it would cost the equivalent of a fortnight in the Canaries.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/04/2014 03:46

Don't deny it, you're typing with your boobs.
Busted.

Grin
nooka · 24/04/2014 04:37

A bra that did the typing might be more appealing Grin

I do have a bra genie which I wear for Taekwondo that's not too bad, but I'd not like to wear it during the day because it's made of spantex type stuff and I think would be very hot.

SpringBreaker · 24/04/2014 06:17

On the rare occasions I have ventured to the supermarket on an emergency dash, braless, I have felt half naked. I have rather large boobs.. They need support!!

If I see women wandering around with saggy boobs and no bra, I really do wonder why they have no shame. It looks awful.

I would love to have smaller boobs and be able to wear strapless tops or halternecks and get away with no bra, but I would get people laughing at me as I would look ridiculous.

Ladies, if you have saggy big boobs, please wear a bloody bra!

nooka · 24/04/2014 06:29

Why should anyone feel shame? I know it's obvious I don't wear a bra, but they are not compulsory.
