..the best way to challenge their thinking or change their views?

It crops up on here frequently and it is only going to become more frequent as UKIP campaigning steps up.

Objecting to or expressing concern over immigration may be nationalist or xenophobic but not racist.

In fact it could be motivated nationalist, xenophobic OR racist views.

I'm really not convinced that anyone needs to conflate racism and economic debate.

But I am enjoying the delicious irony of those who claim the liberal embrace-all and celebrate the diversity T-shirt slamming down and name-calling those who express the need to debate immigration as well as ascribing deeply offensive views to them for no other reason than their opinion is different.

Infernal · 23/04/2014 20:47

OK girls, let's calm down with the swearing, I am a racist if I want to protect what I hold most dear , like saying what I think, when I like, to whom I like. Asking for directions and hearing an English accent for a change, hurrah for St. George's Day.

"You can oppose immigration without being racist."

Correct. I am of the opinion that people who oppose immigration simply haven't considered the issue properly.

My gran went back to her country of birth for her 90th birthday, wearing its flag to go through customs and tearfully hugging everyone saying how much she loved hearing that accent.

Racist bitch.

Boaty · 23/04/2014 21:06

My mother once said to me and she is racist that if you have to shout down someone you have lost the argument.
I didn't get it then.
As I have got older I have got it!
I still rail against her point of view but using reason, sense and intelligent reasoning.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 23/04/2014 21:50

But usually they are not that though, they say the British are work shy and want to claim benefits Confused.

Martorana · 23/04/2014 21:51

"I am a racist if I want to protect what I hold most dear , like saying what I think, when I like, to whom I like."

Would you care to expand on this?

Montegomongoose · 23/04/2014 22:02

Icansmell. You're absolutely right. What was I thinking?

Of course, there is no bigotry, racism, prejudice or ignorance outside this country.

And all racists are white, ill-educated British people.

AmberLeaf · 23/04/2014 22:15

Hurrah for St George who was half black Palestinian and half Turkish.

AmberLeaf · 23/04/2014 22:15

Wonder what his accent sounded like?

TillyTellTale · 23/04/2014 22:19

I think my town may have mucked up our parade, then. We had black people in it!

MistressDeeCee · 23/04/2014 22:21

So what are you supposed to do then? Talk to them in gentle dulcet tones, preferably whilst playing a harp? & that will make their sensitive souls more receptive to your message? Hmm

I agree with Mrs DeV

fidelineish · 23/04/2014 23:50

Can't be bothered to respond to that really Mistress

I actually agree with every (entirely sensible) word MrsDV has said on the subject and don't find any of it incompatible with what I suggested.

TillyTellTale

Thanks for the lesson and your helpful link. I think I might have covered it more briefly when I said this:

I strongly suspect that UKIP aren't very sound on workers' rights either.

It's called understatement. Why don't you give it a whirl next time you feel a lecture coming on?

Do you mean like zero hour contracts and the ATOS work assessments?

That kind of fair?

TillyTellTale · 24/04/2014 00:33

limitedperiodonly

I'm sorry if you felt patronised. It was not my intent. I'm afraid I took you literally, and thought you were literally stating that you suspected they were weak on workers' rights, but that you didn't know for sure.

I apologise for the annoyance.

fidelineish · 24/04/2014 00:33

A silly post about harps doesn't really deserve a response does it Mistress?

And now you accuse me of 'not caring' about racism and, furthermore of attempting to incite it. Which is libellous and beneath contempt really.

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 24/04/2014 00:34

Sorry, caruthers. It's late. I believe I've missed your point.

limitedperiodonly · 24/04/2014 00:35

Thanks tilly. I wasn't very clear

fidelineish · 24/04/2014 00:35

Sorry; of not being 'bothered' about racism and of attempting to incite etc
