Sorry I know I'm probably being unreasonable but why is EVERYWHERE closed?! I really hate Easter. (To me it's a a day for kids and religious people)

PipBin - what we did on drizzly Sunday afternoons back then was to watch a 'classic movie' on the TV.

My family were observant Christians - church morning and evening - but quite happy to buy ice-cream and a bottle of Corona from the corner shop to accompany Sunday lunch. Confused

Wonderful evocation of an old-style Sunday afternoon. Hancock's Half-hour: Sunday Afternoon At Home. (Audio only.) LOL stuff for me!

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 20/04/2014 14:32

It surely shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to come up with laws which entitled anyone who had to work on sundays to their choice of alternative each week, and for those who have to work on public holidays to their choice of alternatives.

Pipbin · 20/04/2014 14:33

ErrolTheDragonsEgg but in my house the TV was not to be turned on until after the evening meal. No one even went in the front room until after 6pm. Unless there was a Grand Prix, that was the exception.

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 14:33

OhYouBadBadKitten Consumerism hasn't become MY faith. I don't believe in any religion and I don't see why shops should be shut to be honest but each to their own.

I work in retail and it's lovely to get a break. Can't you deal with things being closed for one day? This open 24 hours culture comes at a cost.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 20/04/2014 14:35

You'd think so, Errol. I remember the debate when the law was changed. Lots of retail workers spoke up to say that in spite of what their unions said they were very keen to have the chance to work on a Sunday. For many part-timers it was an ideal time as they could get their partner or other family members to look after the children while they were at work. The problem arises when the employer puts pressure on those who don't want to work particular shifts.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/04/2014 14:35

I love it. It's an actual proper sunday.
Like they used to be.

Pipbin · 20/04/2014 14:37

Back when the law changed shop workers rights were protected. I used to work at Boots and some staff had been there since before 1994 and had pre Sunday trading contracts. They didn't have to work Sundays and if they did they got double time.
Shop workers can opt out of Sunday working at any time: www.gov.uk/sunday-working
However I imagine that if you did ask your boss if you could opt out you would be given fairly short shrift.

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 14:39

People would buy things at 24 hours a day if they could. At what cost are you talking Topaz? Businesses make money, people buy stuff they want, employers pay peoples wages. Nothing wrong with night shift etc.

Lots of employers ignore employment laws that don't suit them. It's an employers market so employees can rarely risk challenging them. It's often a case of accept difficult conditions or be unemployed which is a massive price to pay especially as openly challenging employers can seriously reduce chances of getting another job.

JohnCusacksWife · 20/04/2014 14:44

Come to Scotland....it's a gloriously sunny day and the shops are open.

We're having a lovely day....eggs rolled this morning, garden tidied up, leg of lamb slowly roasting in the oven and currently sitting in the garden with a cold one soaking up the sun. Happy Easter!

MrsDeVere Take heart, Easter will go away. Just over 33 hours to go until Tuesday.

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 14:54

Until next year and the whole sorry business starts again!

When I was a child, Good Friday was the worst day of the year. All the shops shut, solemn music all day on the radio, no television and the all pervading smell of boiled fish. Yuck.

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 15:01

Sounds lush Emily Grin Boiled fish smells almost as good as boiled tripe

MarshaBrady · 20/04/2014 15:03

The only thing I remember about Good Fiday is hot cross buns at 3 o'clock. Oh and church.

greenfolder · 20/04/2014 15:04

This easter was fine because we went nowhere. Haven't spent hours in traffic. Now watching the muppet movie in cineworld whilst beef is cooking

If sunday wasn't given special status, there wouldn't be an issue - there would be plenty of people happy to work on the sunday and have the Friday or Saturday off. Being able to opt out of Sunday working, but not being able to opt out of Friday or Saturday could be viewed as religious discrimination.
