Sorry I know I'm probably being unreasonable but why is EVERYWHERE closed?! I really hate Easter. (To me it's a a day for kids and religious people)

I love it when shops are shut Grin

DH has all four days off for once - almost unheard of Smile

Hate how Easter Sunday is now called "Easter Day" in the media though - it's always a Sunday, not like Christmas Day Angry grrr

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2014 12:30

My local off license is open

That's all I need today Grin

ilovepowerhoop · 20/04/2014 12:37

glad we dont have the same restrictions here in Scotland - my local tesco is open 24 hours as normal.

We are having a BBQ later for dinner (making the most of the sun while its here)

hugoagogo · 20/04/2014 12:37

It is dullesville and we get to do it all again tomorrow.

I just want the dc and dh to go back to work and school now; I have 2 bloody essays to write in order to complete my degree and they are in the way

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 12:40

Rules for large shops in England and Wales

Shops over 280 square metres:

can open on Sundays but only for 6 consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm
must close on Easter Sunday
must close on Christmas Day

Yeah but WHY?

happybubblebrain · 20/04/2014 12:41

It's great if you like doing nothing, which I do.

libertytrainers · 20/04/2014 12:42

i am bored now though i want to go out shopping Grin

eyeroller · 20/04/2014 12:43

Mcdonalds isnt closed, there is a long line of cars waiting for their easter sunday lunch lol

Hairylegs47 · 20/04/2014 12:44

They close because we - the UK - are supposed to be a Christian society. Based on Christian values.

Give it a few years and that won't be so. More people will be observing their own religious festivals so the laws will change to suit that majority.

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 12:45

Hairylegs47 (nice name Grin) I honestly hope so

I've enjoyed my morning here on Mumsnet and despite drizzly weather and DC who are really too old for such things (but prepared to indulge their old Mamma in exchange for chocolate Grin) we're going into the garden for an Easter egg hunt. Luckily we noticed the eggs come in 4 colours, so one colour each! DS is hiding the pink ones now .....

Also liked watching "Easter from Kings" yesterday on BBC2, and whenever I'm in the car catching up with the big Classic FM top 300 countdown for the year.

I would like to get to a bookshop though to get a copy of a book I started reading at my DBro's place and can't wait to finish Smile - will have to wait til Tuesday I guess ?

SauvignonBlanche · 20/04/2014 12:48

I think its great to see the shops closed! I love Easter Sunday Easter Grin

Taffeta · 20/04/2014 12:50

Why can't people shop online? Confused

We are watching a film later, I'm cooking a big roast, and have done egg hunt this morning. I had rather a lot of red wine last night, so suits me fine.

hamptoncourt · 20/04/2014 12:52

I love it!!!

Tea, tea and more tea. Maybe some chocolate cake later?

And you do all realise Miss Marple is on ALL DAY don't you? Heaven.

OP, please do not despair. You still have access to the internet and can happily internet shop all day, no?

Retropear · 20/04/2014 12:52

We're not religious but I love it.

Loads of choc and excuse to eat it,a film,Prosecco ,roast, hot cross buns,dp off work......

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 12:52

No delivery until Tuesday? I'd rather have a stroll around an open shop Easter Hmm

I dont view it as anything more than a lazy Sunday. No expectations, so never disappointed. Still in bed with a cuppa, actually Grin

WheresRyder · 20/04/2014 12:55

I don't see the problem in shops being shut for two days a year. It's not like you don't know it's going to happen so plenty of opportunity to arrange something else or just enjoys lobbing around in pj's and eating chocolate. You've had two extra days to go shopping anyway.

Restaurants are still open. We usually have a roast at home or go to the coast for chips and donuts but this year booked a restaurant that's a favourite of ds2's as we couldn't afford to go on his usual birthday trip there in January.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 20/04/2014 12:55

It's because if you go back about 20 years hardly any shops were open on a Sunday. It was a huge deal when parliament changed the law and allowed them to open, because there was considerable resistance from the churches and from the unions. I don't know why it's so different in Scotland, but it is, far more liberal than in England. Down here (don't know about Northern Ireland and Wales) what was agreed was a typical British compromise. Instead of letting the retailers do what they would like, which in the case of the big supermarket chains would definitely be carry on with 24-hour opening (as they are allowed to do in Scotland), MPs said that bigger shops have to open for six hours maximum on Sundays and have to close altogether on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday. The idea is that retail workers should get some guaranteed time off with their families.

I don't know how most of you young people would have coped with a traditional British Sunday. There was almost nothing to do if you didn't go to church. A few corner shops were open briefly to sell bread, milk, papers and a few other essentials. Restricted opening hours for pubs. No wonder we watched so much TV in the 70s.

sewingandcakes · 20/04/2014 12:56

I thought everyone does DIY over the Easter weekend?

I'm enjoying the time with my husband at myself and kids at home together, as I now work 3 out of 4 weekends and DH works away during the week. I have no need to go shopping, and it's just nice to relax at h

How sad that you can't think of anything to do on what has now, sadly, been eroded to only two days a year when shops aren't allowed to trade Sad

ElseaStars · 20/04/2014 13:01

I would enjoy today more if my husband was off but he isn't because he has 109 dinners to cook with his boss. The excuse of "it gives families time off" obviously doesn't apply to everyone.
Tea & Choc it is :)

Does anyone know why we have weird trading laws on a sunday and why easter sunday is always worse?

Back in 1994 only certain things were allowed to be sold on Sundays. IIRC you could sell magazines, but not books for example. I remember this at the time because we were told that sunday closing was for religious grounds but the trading laws meant that you could buy a copy of playboy but not a bible.
You could sell food too, and that was how the DIY stores got round it. In some places you could go in to Focus DIY or Do It All and buy a load of stuff. You would them be given an orange and be told that the orange cost the exact same as the items you bought and all the stuff you wanted came free with the orange. So they were selling you the orange and therefore it was legal.

The change in the law happened in 1994 and a lot of people were against it, including M&S and John Lewis.
