OP posts:
GiddyUpCowboy · 18/04/2014 09:50

I don't see the shame in being concerned about the leaflets considering the situation in Ukraine.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 11:21

It's the annexing of another country that makes me think of Hitler. He was already in there before there was a referendum on the matter. That and the fact he has admitted having designs on any former Soviet countries and also Finland.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/04/2014 11:30

Putin is expansionist and brutally suppresses political opponents in Russia, but has shown no signs of planning genocide.
He's nasty, not Nazi.

The OP listed several possible sources for the leaflets, so she was NBU. Some of both the pro and anti Russia groups in the Ukraine have fascist / anti-semitic views and we don't know who will eventually become top dog.

We'd be horrified if masked men distributed similar leaflets outside a London synagogue or mosque and it would be headline news.
It is normal to be sickened about racist literature threatening harm, even in a stable democracy, never mind the Ukraine.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 18/04/2014 11:50

Sarinka Shame on you for judging people who always wonder if the unthinkable will happen again.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 11:53

And for the record, it is Putin that I don't like, not Russia itself.

Apparently Sweden has been on high alert this week after Russian fighter planes invaded its air space.

GiddyUpCowboy · 18/04/2014 11:58

Have you a link the that article?

PaschalFancy · 18/04/2014 11:59

Can I remind people something doesn't have to tick every last Hitler/Nazism box before we're allowed to worry?

By the time it does tick every box, it's a little blooming late.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 11:59

Nope. My dd has friends in Sweden. They told her. I can have a google though.

PaschalFancy · 18/04/2014 12:02

And actually, it never has to tick all boxes. The Rwandan genocide wasn't somehow OK because the killing didn't take place in labour camps.

It still had quite enough awful familiar features for the build up to be recognisable.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 12:04

There's this www.thelocal.se/20140304/sweden-sends-gripen-jets-to-gotland though it seems like military training. But still you don't go about invading other country's air space. It is seen as threatening.

MNwidowed · 18/04/2014 12:11

Come on! it's obviously a pro nazi group, trying to get their share of action in what is probably a really messed up place at the moment. Putins not an anti jew, he's just pro communism. Pat them on the head, give them a sweet and tell them to go and play, they'll soon go back to the filthy pit where they came from.

PosyFossilsShoes · 18/04/2014 12:12

This thread is yet more proof of how eager the ignorant are to believe anything, provided that it has an anti-Russian slant.

Or equally, proof of how low the Putin regime has sunk, that this becomes believable.

We've already got chest-beating nationalism, expansionism into Ukraine (and if I were Latvia I'd be getting a bit twitchy too, given the sizeable non-Latvian Russian minority there), scapegoating of minorities (LGBT people and immigrants) in conjunction with the revival of propiska. You don't need exact replication of events to draw parallels with previous dangerous regimes.

SecretWitch · 18/04/2014 12:25

I am going to hide this thread now before I have to read any more ignorant comments by Sarinka. I could care less where you live.

MNwidowed · 18/04/2014 12:44

I agree with sarinka. Putins a communist, he hates anything non Russian not just the jews, he's not a nazi. Get off your conspiracy box and rea the facts. From independent sources of course

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 12:53

If Putin was a true communist he wouldn't live as he does and he would be working for the people not his own gain and notoriety. He's a tyrant.

BackOnlyBriefly · 18/04/2014 12:56

Firstly did anyone here claim it was on orders from Putin? The first impression I had was of local Russians strutting around and giving orders because they are being backed up by Russia. If we have now established that Putin sent no such order does that mean the leaflets were okay then.

Secondly, even if you could establish that no Russian was involved how does that make Putin the good guy? He is in the process of invading another country. Do we need to wait for proof that he is targeting Jews? He is targeting Ukrainians. Isn't that enough?

The comparison with Hitler was perfectly reasonable. He took Poland because he wanted it and no one stopped him so he kept going.

MNwidowed · 18/04/2014 13:23

To say say Putins a good guy is ridiculous, you are probably right YOUTHECAT, he maybe more of a tyrant than a commy but the difference with Hitler and Russia and I would say this is a big difference. Is Hitler just wanted rid of Jews and complete control of Europe(smells abit James Bond villain that) but Putin(rightly or wrongly) wants control of the states that he still see as Russian, Ukraine, Georgia etc. Thats what I was saying when I meant he was a commy, old school USSR but with more money this time round.

MaRyzerection · 18/04/2014 13:44

I bet we'd have all been called stupid three months ago if someone posted a link saying Russia were going to take over Crimea.

People would have said don't be silly, stop scaremongering Hmm

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 13:44

Finland too though.

And Hitler had to start somewhere, Czechoslovakia I believe.

MNwidowed · 18/04/2014 13:59

Not really because he'd sent out warnings to other countries way before the Ukraine/Crimea thing started. It wasn't that far fetched are unbelievable.

MNwidowed · 18/04/2014 14:01

or unbelievable, i meant to say.

ReadyToBreak · 18/04/2014 14:03

I believe this is a hoax, thankfully!

Putin is bonkers though. I think he's lost it.

Beastofburden · 18/04/2014 14:12

Still nothing on the BBC. Makes me very glad we have the BBC so we do all have one source of news we can trust.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/04/2014 15:03

CNN and other reliable news sources reported the leaflets were distributed by masked men outside a main synagogue, but said it wasn't clear who was responsible.
So, they fulfilled their duty responsibly to report worrying events, but didn't blame anyone in particular without evidence.

The BBC basically ignored the leaflets, so those who have it as their main source were not provided with a good service. A vacuum, when the news is out there, is more likely to lead to conspiracy theories than trusting us with facts and a sober assessment of possibilities.

The Daily Shame is not a serious news outlet.

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 15:11

there are some people who are not aware that Russia has a serious neo-Nazi problem, and right-wing nationalist extremists. Just to help:

RussianMarch: National holiday hijacked by nationalists

Russia neo-Nazis jailed for life over 27 race murders

(Judge shot dead) Judge Eduard Chuvashov had presided over several high-profile trials including the sentencing of some of Russia's most notorious neo-nazis.

Russian court jails nine over racist killing

I do not know to what extent the Russian Nationalists in Ukraine share the sentiments of those in Russia.
