Ha no Zing I understood that would be some seriously powerful trolling on my behalf!

just read some various news bits online - it seems like Pro-Russian separatists and Pushilin deny any involvement with these leaflets that are now viewed as provocation.

still a serious threat, regardless of who made them, but I hope this means it's not actually true.

very confusing

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 00:53

We are talking about papers that were allegedly handed out by masked, armed men?

In a city that is controlled my masked, armed men who are pro-Russian separatists, and where not even the Ukrainian army can get in?

It could be a hoax, or it could be that there are anti-semites among the pro-Russians. Such things are not at all unknown. However Mr Putin exercises authority over the separatists, so if he thinks the unwanted publicity will not be to his advantage, I am sure some professional armed men with no insignia on their uniforms or vehicles will call round and give helpful advice.

Shakshuka · 18/04/2014 01:01

I don't think it's true. It doesn't make sense. Bandera was a well-known anti-semite and was pro-Nazi (at first, until he realised they didn't want an independent Ukraine either). Jews were often despised by the Ukrainian nationalist movements as they were strongly identified with communism and the Soviet Union.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Ukrainian nationalists trying to make the pro-Russian miltias look bad because the charge of racism and fascism is often levelled against them by Russia.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2014 01:04

I don't think Putin cares about unwanted publicity. He has already admitted that his troops were in Crimea before the March referendum took place. They would have continued regardless.

pamish · 18/04/2014 01:10

Those original street battles and demonstrations in Kiev etc included flag-waving fascists. Anti-Soviet/anti-Communist feeling got translated into far right politics, some politicians were overtly fascist. This stayed even after the 1989+ changes in the Soviet Union. So there is a rump of seriously nasty fascists who are part of the Europe-facing movement in Ukraine. Russia uses this as an excuse to 'defend' Russian-speaking ex-pats in Ukraine. I expect this hoax is to add fuel to that fire.

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 01:17

Yes, he has now admitted what was generally known; that the armed men with insignia removed from their matching uniforms and vehicles with Russian number plates, who occupied Ukrainian airfields and other installations in Crimea, were Russian troops, and not, as he previously claimed, local people who had bought their uniforms, guns and tanks in some Crimean shop.

AFAIK he is still denying that the well-organised armed units, in matching uniforms with no insignia, who spearheaded the assaults on Eastern Ukrainian police stations and government buildings, are anything other than local people who bought their uniforms and guns in a shop. It is possible that he is saying this in order to deny the invasion of a neighbouring country by units of the Russian Army. Or perhaps it is actually true (this time). Who knows.

Shakshuka · 18/04/2014 01:18

But the pamphlets are supposedly from the pro-Russian forces. Putin is a lot of not very nice things but he's not anti-semitic. I don't believe for a second that this comes from the pro-Russian militias. The references to Bandera are also just weird.

It's because there is some truth in the anti-semitic, anti-Russian and fascist charges being laid against the Ukrainian nationalists (the more extremist elements) and because Russia is cynically exploiting this for its own ends, that I think that it's the Ukrainian nationalists who produced these pamphlets as provocation against the pro-Russians.

Still must be terrifying for the remnants of the Jewish community, many of whom will remember life under the Nazis. :(

MoaningLisa · 18/04/2014 01:27

Hope this isn't true Sad

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 01:28

Russia does have a considerable problem with its own neo-nazis and extreme nationalists; that is not in dispute.

There may be some among the Russian nationalists seeking to secede from Ukraine.

Or of course it could be a hoax.

As the city is under the control of the armed and masked pro-Russian separatists there is not much chance of an independent investigation.

Ynetnews is the online English version of Israel's largest paper, Yediot Aharonot. What you won't find from google is that is generally considered quite accurate in the facts it reports.

Thank you HomeHelpMeGawd , I did indeed look up the website, and found this story number four in their home page. Obviously they consider it to be of some importance.

However, not as important as an article about Chelsea Clinton being pregnant. That made number two.

I can see why this would be a source of news that is generally considered quite accurate in the facts it reports.

The story to which I assume you are referring merits just 7 small lines.
Kerry condemns pamphlet threatening Donetsk Jews

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 02:43

Partial

I gather you did not use the link on page 1 of this thread, which gives a much fuller article.

There is considerably more than seven lines.

partialderivative · 18/04/2014 02:47

No, I went to their homepage which I assumed would lead me to their main article.

Was that silly of me?

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 02:52

I suppose if the person creating this thread went to the trouble of providing a link to the story they were talking about, then yes, it was silly of you not to read it.

partialderivative · 18/04/2014 02:53

From the article published online in the English version of Israel's largest paper:

it's hard to tell whether the leaflet is valid or simply a provocation.

PigletJohn · 18/04/2014 03:01

Yes indeed. It might be a hoax, or it might have been written and distributed by a sub-group of the pro-Russian nationalists who control the city. Or it might even have been produced under the orders of the pro-Russian committee.

My own guess is that it was more likely the work of a bunch of nutters, but with the city in the hands of armed and masked separitists, there is not much chance of an independent investigation.

lostheloveofmylife · 18/04/2014 03:35

This has been reported all day on Canada's CBC (equivalent of BBC) news.

Shakshuka · 18/04/2014 04:33

Yediot (the paper behind ynet) is a tabloid, about the level of the Daily Mail. Not surprising that Chelsea Clinton is a lead story!

Haaretz is a serious paper and here is their take on it - it's a fake.

HomeHelpMeGawd · 18/04/2014 07:53

Partial, I don't see how you can "see why this would be a source of news that is generally considered quite accurate in the facts it reports" from looking at its homepage one day. You have to have an extended interest in news from the Middle East and work your way through various controversial stories and see who gets the facts right to know

I also don't see why you raise the issue of importance with me. I made no claims re the story's importance, I simply responded to your point about the source being unknown by pointing out that it was not

Jumping to conclusions while seated on a high horse is apt to get you very saddle sore

meditrina · 18/04/2014 08:09

The Neo Nazi threat in Ukraine is strongly associated with the Kiev Government. The BBC has reported on this (it was on Newsnight) and it has been round the world eg in articles like this

yegodsandlittlefishes · 18/04/2014 08:12

Good to wake up to the news today that a Ukraine peace treaty of some kind has been signed and that this was a hoax.

Still, an unpleasant hoax.

sarinka several news sites and newspapers had this story. There's no shame in believing it and being horrified at something like this happening again.
