To not want to be the minority where I live?

Charlottehines · 12/04/2014 09:18

It really saddens me that in parks and soft plays with my children, that I am in the minority and my children can't play with other children there as they all play together and obviously can't speak English.
I'm in no way racist, my husband is of mixed origin but I do find it incredibly sad that my children are growing up the minority especially when these other groups make no effort to integrate with other mums or the children.
Am I completely unreasonable to feel sad about this?

OP posts:
Misspixietrix · 12/04/2014 15:12

Dancing do you have any links to support that claim?

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 15:13

Sorry, what claim have I made?

Misspixietrix · 12/04/2014 15:21

If I have a choice of schools in my area, yes I would prefer to send my children to one that didn't have 90% plus kids from an Asian background, many recent immigrants.
^^Here. The 90% one.

mrsbucketxx · 12/04/2014 15:24

would you still feel like that if the of stead etc was amazing, would you rather send your child to an all white school that was crap.

its about stats for me im afraid not the colour of the childrens skin, or race tey come from

ouryve · 12/04/2014 15:25

And groups of bored young men are a big problem in my 98% white British rural area. They're bloody intimidating. Particularly when they're off their heads on a Friday afternoon.

ouryve · 12/04/2014 15:26

And every bit as sexist as the gang mentioned upthread.

gordyslovesheep · 12/04/2014 15:31

OP basically you are confusing rude behaviour with being not English speaking - the 2 are not mutually exclusive

plenty of rude English speakers - plenty of decent non english speaking parents out there

the rest is just silly

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 15:36

Why would I send my kids to a crap all white school? Why would I send my kids to an all white school?

Misspixietrix · 12/04/2014 15:43

I think sometimes we all need to check how our behaviour projects. I used to work for a nightclub - some of the customers wouldn't approach me as I quote "You looked like a rather scary security guard to be honest'[ 'Grin. i was always mindful then and got the customers we needed. I do think it all falls down to peoples' attitudes. I live in a very mixed area yet only recently got death glares after daring to offer my directions to someone who was quite obviously lost. Anyone would have thought I'd asked for his Pin Number!

OhMerGerd · 12/04/2014 15:43

dancingnancy the minute you started talking about the 'non white' as if having a darker skin tone equals something undesirable to be living alongside/at school with. That was when you made racist statements.
As someone with the pale skin tone that society labels 'white' you are speaking from a perspective of latent subconscious and misguided privilege and superiority. You don't even seem to realise that by using colour to define people regardless of all the other characteristics and personality traits that each person possesses you are making negative judgements based on race. Racist judgements and racist statements.
You talk of having lived as a 'white' minority in other countries. Do you mind sharing what exactly you were doing in these places? Living amongst people who you clearly have barely below the surface disdain for. And does the amount of money you (or the person who pays for your living if you don't work) when you live as a minority 'white' amongst other darker skinned people outweigh the discomforts you feel? Why would you be less happy to do that on one patch of earth called for example England than in another patch of earth (insert name of country you have lived in this way). Or when you live abroad do you tend to congregate together with others we call 'ex-pats' if they're 'white' living abroad but 'immigrants/migrants' of they're darker skinned and living in UK?

ElkTheory · 12/04/2014 15:46

How good is your Polish, Charlotte? Though I would imagine that you could actually communicate with the other mothers in English if their language skills are up to phrases as rich and disparate as "fuck off" and "boys will be boys."

And I'm sure you wouldn't mind at all if these mothers generalise about all English-speaking natives of the UK based on you and your children. So when your kids misbehave, you would find it perfectly appropriate if the other women at the park tutted and rolled their eyes and remarked that it seemed sad that English children were so ill behaved. After all, that is what they have observed.

BTW, any time you feel the need to preface your remarks with the phrase "I'm in no way racist," you may wish to rethink what you're about to say.

I find this thread oddly heartening. Despite an ugly initial post and a few other bigoted statements by other posters, there are many excellent and eloquent posts from MrsDeVere and others.

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 15:47

Misspixietricks - it's in the Ofstead report.

caruthers · 12/04/2014 15:50

This thread is an indictment of WHY UKIP are becoming more and more attractive and prominent.

Quinteszilla · 12/04/2014 15:57

I would like to see the playground where groups of people who know each-other and talk to each-other in their mother tongue (whether English or not) is going to straight away include a newcomer to the public space and chat to them like they were old friends.

I am not sure exactly why the OP feels excluded in a public space, by people she does not know, and that clearly knows each other.

The same goes for the children, why should pre school age children be expected to include a stranger?

OP, you need to do something more interesting and worthwhile with your time than hanging around the city center park/playground every day.

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 15:57

"the minute you started talking about the 'non white' as if having a darker skin tone equals something undesirable to be living alongside/at school with. That was when you made racist statements. "

"You talk of having lived as a 'white' minority in other countries. Do you mind sharing what exactly you were doing in these places? Living amongst people who you clearly have barely below the surface disdain for."

Well, you don't know me at all and who or what race my friends are but continue to be judgemental and make statements about me.

Misspixietrix · 12/04/2014 16:00

The Ofsted report specifically to your school then? so not schools plural?

Dawndonnaagain · 12/04/2014 16:00

You made a racist statement Nancy, and denied that it was racist. Of course people are going to make judgements about what you post. Hmm

MistressDeeCee · 12/04/2014 16:02

Silly, goady post. So how did the mother tell you to 'fuck off' when she can't speak English? Or did you just add that bit in as posters weren't being as unreasonable as you thought they'd be? oh look..you've said they hit your children too. Up the ante time.

I suppose I can assume you live in the UK. & that where you live in the UK, there is nobody of you/your childrens' race at all. Right. OK then.

& that if your children run away when they see children of other nationalities, its not because their mother's racist attitude is rubbing off on them. I mean, god forbid children should be allowed to just mix and play, as children do, without nonsense attitudes being foisted onto them..

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 16:04

Quote my racist statement, please and I'll have a look.

MoominMammasHandbag · 12/04/2014 16:05

What Caruthers said.

hazeyjane · 12/04/2014 16:11

It seems to be the polish /eastern Europeans that have this attitude

Horseshit.

dancingnancy · 12/04/2014 16:11

Misspixietrix - yes, I was speaking of a school near me. One of a few I looked at. My whole point earlier was really wondering what it would feel like to be a minority in my own country (something I have no experience of). Some of my Asian friends are afraid sometimes to go out and about on their own, even though they were born here and have been verbally abused and one even had her hijab pulled off.

Mitchy1nge · 12/04/2014 16:13

wow you have your own country

you lucky thing

Misspixietrix · 12/04/2014 16:13

YY Mistress!

IHaveAFifthSense · 12/04/2014 16:14

Nancy it has already been quoted, but I'll show you again if you like: "Don't know how I'd feel ... if my kids went to a school which was 90% plus non white or immigrants."

I'm not white. I was born in Britain. Both of my parents were born in Britain. One of my grandparents was even born here. I am very obviously "non white" though. Very much British. (I'm on my fourth cup of tea of the day and have apologised several times for things today. I think that makes me about as British as it gets.) You would object to you DCs going to school with a lot of people like me or my DC because we're non-white.

That's just focusing on the non-white part. There is a lot more to be said about the immigrants part.
