In another thread (this is not really a thread about a thread) about schools some posters have made it very clear that they hate schools, see teachers as jumped up nazis and feel that everyone is feeling superior and looking down on them.

Am I alone is feeling upset and insulted by this?

I am a teacher and surely we both want the same thing, the best for your child?
We are not the enemy. We are on the same side.

I sometimes wonder if people have the ability see beyond themselves, being a teacher yourself op, does this mean you think all teachers are 100% wonderful?

Very few people hold this kind of opinion about their colleagues . . .

GiddyUpCowboy · 11/04/2014 15:11

The reason the parents behave like children around teachers is that is how the teachers talk to them, as if they are children so the parents revert back. If the teachers spoke to parents like they were fellow human beings/fellow adults and didn't talk down to them like they were children beneath them, they would get a much better reaction.

I seriously think some teachers have no idea what it is like to speak to people as if they are fellow human's and they only know how to speak to people as if they are beneath them and have no idea that they are doing this.

Phoebefoibles · 11/04/2014 15:12

I love my dds' school.

I think they (like others) are under enormous pressure to deal with ever-changing goal posts, and do a huge amount behind the scenes working to give the pupils valuable experiences and opportunities. I know the teachers give up free time, and some even spend their own money buying little sundries for their class/year group, if it's to do with something they are learning about.

I have liked and had the utmost respect for most of them - very professional, hard workers, etc. Even the one teacher I had a slight run in with (it was a disagreement about reading levels) - it was more to do with their inexperience in the job I think and it was resolved without too much trouble. My kids are happy, and they enjoy going - I'm sure that they will have very happy memories of their time there when they leave in a few years. I think the school has really good values and is helping to shape them into fairly decent people too. For that I think (apart from parenting of course) I have the school and teachers to thank.

GiddyUpCowboy · 11/04/2014 15:14

Nobody is doubting that teachers give up free time and do lots of great things, they also think they are the Lord I am and that they are somehow above others, just because someone does something good does not make them whiter than white and entitled to speak down to others, we are all shades of grey and all that.

Yes some teachers.

shebird · 11/04/2014 15:21

It's like everything there are good ones and bad ones but the bad ones often give everyone a bad reputation. I have great respect for the job teachers do especially under the current pressures. Parents who are constantly moaning about teachers and schools in front of children are reinforcing the lack of respect and undermining their authority. Why would a child pay any attention to a teacher if his parents were constantly rubbishing him/ her at home?

Goblinchild · 11/04/2014 15:22

GiddyUp, do you feel like this about other people that you come into contact with? That they are sneering at you, and looking down on you?
Or is it just teachers?

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 11/04/2014 15:23

Between my two kids we have are coming up to 21 years of education. Some of those teachers have been wonderful, a true blessing. Some have been mediocre or less than mediocre and a few should not be allowed to teach another kid and I have strongly stated that they will not teach my kid again.

GiddyUpCowboy · 11/04/2014 15:31

Where did I say anyone was sneering at me? Do you sneer at people?

motherinferior · 11/04/2014 15:33

I seriously think some teachers have no idea what it is like to speak to people as if they are fellow human's and they only know how to speak to people as if they are beneath them and have no idea that they are doing this.

This, and other similar posts, imply that you feel teachers are sneering at you.

motherinferior · 11/04/2014 15:34

I do revert to being a smartarse sixth-former around some teachers. I have to curb this tendency.

Goblinchild · 11/04/2014 15:35

It was in relation to this post:

'they also think they are the Lord I am and that they are somehow above others, just because someone does something good does not make them whiter than white and entitled to speak down to others, we are all shades of grey and all that'

I wonder if you felt the same about any other groups of people, or if it was just teachers that you felt spoke down to you.

motherinferior · 11/04/2014 15:35

Mind you, I'm a journalist. Which is considered on a level with pondscum most of the time on MN.

Goblinchild · 11/04/2014 15:37

That depends on which publications you write for, doesn't it? Smile

well i am sorry for your troubles whatnowmylove but what job is worth killing yourself over? more than a whiff of the burning martyr there

Demonstrating your distinct lack of life experience. A 'job' is what people have because they have responsibilities and need to pay the bills. If that hadn't been the case, I shouldn't have stayed more than three weeks.

As it was, I worked for my living, not for fun - like normal people.

Philoslothy · 11/04/2014 15:43

I was about to post the same coldlight. Grin

Feenie · 11/04/2014 16:12

I'm a primary teacher, and I have the Primary Ed section hidden on here.
It's made my life happier.

Good thinking! It has been especially bonkers there lately as well Confused

Goblinchild · 11/04/2014 16:30

Well, I was going to say that the only thing I really miss over there is Feenie, but it sounded waaay too creepy. But it's true. Wine Smile

I got enough stress and involvement with primary education IRL without adding to it on the internet, and the solution just came to me.

WeAreDetective · 11/04/2014 16:34

I don't like admitting I am a teacher on here because it results in a whole load of negative assumptions being made. I regularly name change because of it.

And I tend to avoid the secondary board for much the same reason, goblin!

Feenie · 11/04/2014 16:35

Awww, shucks Blush Wine Thanks

Am very tempted to do the same, sounds very peaceful!

glucose · 11/04/2014 16:36

Sorry that OP feels like that....I can see it is a hard job, as parenting can be, indeed life in general...I just hope the end of term/Xmas pressure help teachers know...they are very important in children's lives

BigBoobiedBertha · 11/04/2014 16:40

My boys' old infant school has a brilliant HT. She loves her job and it shows in the way she interacts with the children. The school is well run and achieves brilliant results. I was talking to another teacher the other day, one that doesn't work for her and she said the way this HT works a class room and teaches is outstanding.

But, she is not universally liked by adults, despite doing an good job, because she sometimes tries to deal with adults like she deals with the children - she is a bit bossy and very much the one in charge. I suppose if you are not the most confident person you might think she was looking down on you but it is just her unfortunate way. I like her actually, having been fortunate enough to have had a few 'normal' conversations with her but I can completely understand why some people don't and I suppose the dynamic between teachers and parents can sometimes not bring out the best in either of them.

Fusedog · 11/04/2014 16:45

I agree the many schools are awful thanks to low aspiration ECt and constant striking sadly never about class sizes , lack of playing fields the lack of rigour and the seemily inability to get rid of shit teachers but there always time to strike over pensions and pay Hmm
