To not know why children have to eat the crusts?

What purpose do they serve? Are they full of goodness? I still don't eat mine and I have no idea why I should

Because it's a waste of food otherwise.

Although you can now buy crustless bread.

Faverolles · 10/04/2014 12:05

Don't they make your hair curl?

HazeltheMcWitch · 10/04/2014 12:05

Because it's otherwise a total waste of food and money? And the world is running out of resources...

Plus, they taste no different to the non-crust.

Faverolles · 10/04/2014 12:06

We bought crust less bread once. The dc still left the appropriate amount of bread edge Hmm

LordEmsworth · 10/04/2014 12:06

They make your hair curl, of course Grin

It's about not wasting food! It's the same as clearing your plate, a cultural norm. They're not actually any more (or less) nutritious than the "main" bit

CrispyHedgeHog · 10/04/2014 12:08

Cos they make your hair curly.

I still don't eat them and I've got a big mop of curls

badidea · 10/04/2014 12:08

I ate crusts for years hoping to have curly hair like my sister (my dad lied...)

BillyBanter · 10/04/2014 12:08

I'm sure I did once see a link to some paper or other explaining that the crust is the (nutritionally) best bit.

The good think about being adult is not having to eat your crusts if you don't want too.

OwlCapone · 10/04/2014 12:08

Because children (and adults) need to eat food that actually requires them to chew properly and build up jaw muscles.

WhosLookingAfterCourtney · 10/04/2014 12:08

I don't eat them, they're for the birds.

Dry, no marmite on them, yuck.

softlysoftly · 10/04/2014 12:09

Because they are the best bit? I cut them off for DD1 though, not worth the angst I can't force her to eat and if I leave them on she actually eats less of the sandwich by leaving great rings around the no go crust area.

TheListingAttic · 10/04/2014 12:09

My friend's mum used to remake her sandwiches: two slices cut into four little ones, and she'd turn the top bit round 180 degrees, so there was a single layer of crust right the way round the whole thing. I won't tell you how old we were before we figured out how to undo this trick!

But seriously, it's just a waste thing, isn't it? You're chucking out a fifth of your sandwich if you leave them. Although I don't particularly like them. Taste the same, but nasty texture.

Walnuss · 10/04/2014 12:10

They do not make your hair curl, it's a cruel lie Sad

BigBoobiedBertha · 10/04/2014 12:11

Ha, ha! I was going to say because it makes your hair curl too. It only works for children though. Mine got straighter as I got older. Wink

Fresh crusts are the best bit too. Plus the waste aspect of not eating them.

Walnuss · 10/04/2014 12:11

The texture is why they are the best bit!

theDudesmummy · 10/04/2014 12:12

Strangely my DS does not eat the crust on a normal piece of toast, but when you make him a piece that is all crust, ie the end of the bread, he eats the whole piece!

BigBoobiedBertha · 10/04/2014 12:14

I assume we are talking about proper loaves here not sliced bread in a packet. Then you can't even tell there is a crust so I am not sure what the issue would be with eating a whole slice.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/04/2014 12:17

Maybe I should have listened to my mum about crusts making your hair curl ... mine is dead straight and has cost me a fortune in perms over the years!!

magimedi · 10/04/2014 12:19

My DH (60's) doesn't eat his crusts & he has hair like a yard of pump water (as they say) Grin

Cerisier · 10/04/2014 12:20

YANBU OP. I do eat crusts but only after cutting them off. I can eat a mouthful of crust or a mouthful of no crust, but I don't enjoy a crust gradient.

ormirian · 10/04/2014 12:22

Because it's a waste of food. No, they are no fuller of goodness than the rest of the bread.

And they help you see in the dark....

Or do they give you curly eyes? or make you hair orange..... or something .

Allalonenow · 10/04/2014 12:23

It's well know that they do make your hair curl. I've got curly hair Grin

catsofa · 10/04/2014 12:25

If it helps, the reason I sometimes cut off crusts is cos people don't put the filling in all the way to the edge, and I don't want whole mouthfuls of just bread as I find it too dry. Fill the bleedin sandwich properly and I don't waste any...

RedandChecker · 10/04/2014 12:25

DS doesn't like them and I hated them as a child found them dry, as an adult I love them so I let DS not have them instead of force him to eat them, he may change his mind later on!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/04/2014 12:27

Because it is a waste of food.
