To not know why children have to eat the crusts?

What purpose do they serve? Are they full of goodness? I still don't eat mine and I have no idea why I should

MaxPepsi so reassuring to meet someone else who doesn't like the round side!!!
I can now tell DH I'm not the only one!

MaxPepsi · 10/04/2014 15:22

Indeed Loki Grin

My DH however just thinks I'm strange and will eat which ever slice of bread he puts his hand on first with no thought to my idiosyncrasies!

Even with square bread I prefer the bottom half!!

StrawberryGashes · 10/04/2014 15:29

My children don't get forced to eat crusts here, I don't like crusts either so wouldn't make the dc eat them. I buy crustless bread so nothing gets wastes but if do buys normal bread then the crusts are cut off first if anyone but him is eating it.

I also don't make them eat everything on their plate either, they eat until they're full not until the plate is clear.

LokiDokey · 10/04/2014 15:32

Then Max you need to tell him that there are men out there who consider their wives idiosyncrasies and supply them with only the square side. Unless he can also do this you will LTB Wink

I also prefer the bottom half of square bread. It just tastes different, though you are the only other person who agrees with me.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/04/2014 15:33

Golden crispy crusts are lovely.
Overcooked chewy crusts aren't. The 'round' half of a slice of bread often has this sort of crust - both the taste and the texture are not as nice as the rest of the slice/other crusts.

SlimJiminy · 10/04/2014 15:51

I love crusts!! It would never occur to me to leave them. I love it when you get a loaf that's slightly burnt on top but I'm too frugal to pay for anything but the cheapest non-burnt, hardly-any-crust bread most of the time

It's also incredibly wasteful to leave them!

theDudesmummy · 10/04/2014 16:27

My DS eats the crusts on a pizza before he eats the middle (and will leave middle behind rather than crust)

RedFocus · 10/04/2014 16:41

I cut them off. I don't like them so why should I make my kids eat them.

Skivvywoman · 10/04/2014 16:44

I never eat crusts they make your hair curly Wink

soaccidentprone · 10/04/2014 16:51

I always thought that eating foods which are a bit 'denser' is better for your teeth and gums, rather than just eating soft food all the time?

familygermsareok · 10/04/2014 17:10

Because they are the best bits
^^ Smile

I love crusts and the whole family know to leave the end bits of the loaf for me ( I would share if anyone else appreciated them properly but they all just eat whatever is there). Even my PILs save their end bits for me! Grin

It is. I made that point right near the start but it seems to have got lost in all the "curly hair" stuff.

Our diet has become increasingly soft and requires far less chewing than previously (lots of very soft bread, pasta etc). DCs orthodontist cites this as one of the contributing factors to crowded teeth, misaligned jaws and other facial issues. I know my children whinge about, say, having to chew meat that really isn't that tough at all.

HelenHen · 10/04/2014 18:10

I hated crusts as a kid and ds hates them so I just cut them off. If I didn't cut them off he'd leave them and it would be wasted anyway but he'd also leave more bread! However, when I have a sandwich or toast and he wants some, I only give him the crust and he goes 'mmmm nice' Grin

I also don't make them eat everything on their plate... That's not healthy. We had to eat everything and, to this day, I struggle to leave any little bit behind, no matter how full I am. I want my kids to know their own bodies!

RachelWatts · 10/04/2014 18:26

DS1 doesn't eat crusts on sandwiches because he doesn't have a particularly big appetite and a sandwich made from a double round of bread is too much for him. He'd rather eat the part with the filling.

He loves sandwiches or toast made with the end of the loaf, so it's not as if he doesn't like crusts!

DS2 is only just 1, so it hasn't occurred to him that he can look at his sandwich and turn it round to eat the nicest bit first. He tends to just shove the whole lot in!

Delphiniumsblue · 10/04/2014 18:49

I like the crusts best, I always have.

dottygamekeeper · 10/04/2014 19:03

As a child we had to eat the crusts because they made our hair curl (the same as cabbage - neither worked) and because we also had to think about the starving children in Africa (I never could understand why we couldn't just put them in an envelope and post them...). I don't like them even now, but usually eat them unless I am feeling posh and cut them off, much to the delight of the dog and the chickens!

HannerHet · 10/04/2014 19:04

It's a waste, though I admit I don't insist my children eat them.
I work in a coffee shop part time, and one customer (grown woman) sent back her toast as she wanted the crusts removed! Angry
1 - cut them off yourself, your a grown woman!
2 - just eat round them and leave them
3 - just bloody eat them!

HannerHet · 10/04/2014 19:05

I cut quite a big piece off all sides so she only had a small square when I returned it! Grin

iklboo · 10/04/2014 19:07

I can take or leave crusts on sliced bread. But it's the best bit of an uncut loaf - especially tiger bread.

Mmmmmm.

Aeroflotgirl · 10/04/2014 19:07

It's wasting food

itsatiggerday · 10/04/2014 19:11

Well I bake our bread myself and it pisses me off if half of each loaf is chucked in the bin and means I have to bake it more frequently . Mine eat them. But we had 3 friends round who 'left the crusts' which translated to more than half of each slice which gave me the rage. They wanted a second sandwich because they were still hungry. Well eat the rest of what's on your plate then!
