To ask if you know what this bug/virus is

This is my first post on AIBU and I realise I probably am being unreasonable to post here rather than on the health board, but I'm feeling a bit desperate and need the traffic.

I have been blessed with a super efficient immune system, which means I very rarely get ill and, if I do catch a cold, I can usually shake it off very quickly. I know the difference between flu and a cold - I haven't had flu for over 30 years, but I recall how bad it was. However, I do have some sort of bug at the moment, which has knocked me sideways and I wonder if anyone has experienced anything like this recently. I am supposed to be taking my kids to see my elderly parents in a few days time, and I cannot risk them catching this.

On Friday, I was working at home and was fine until about 2pm, when the most overwhelming tiredness came upon me. Within a matter of minutes, I was in a pretty poor state - terrible headache (worse at the bottom of my skull at the back, but coming over my ears, causing hissing noises, and over the top of my head, causing a heaviness in my eyes), very bad backache, particularly at the bottom of my spine, and chills. I couldn't get warm, even after getting into bed with my clothes on, so I ran a hot bath. Whilst it was filling up, I had goosebumps upon goosebumps and started to shake.

I warmed up only when I was almost completely submerged in the bath and then managed to sleep for a couple of hours. When I woke, I felt worse. My symptoms now included muscle pain and abdominal pain, so it felt a lot like the beginnings of flu, but there were no cold symptoms and no D&V symptoms. These symptoms have continued on and off until today. The nights are bad, as I can't sleep a great deal and I am bathed in sweat. Oh, and I am also incredibly hungry and thirsty. I must be the only person on the planet who can feel this ill and put weight ON!

At the moment, I don't feel too bad, provided I don't exert myself in any way. All the symptoms have subsided a little, but I feel incredibly weak - like I can't raise myself off the sofa. I hate this. I lost money on Sunday as I am self employed and couldn't go in to do work for my client, even though I had spent ages preparing for it. Moving forward, I have a To Do List as long as my arm and I can't sit around.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms please? My guess is it must be contagious, but I would really like to know how long you need to be clear of something like this before it is safe to mix with others, particularly elderly people.

Sad
Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 00:20

It is alarming it seems to last for so long.

I'm on day two of coughing, sore throat, feeling hot and then cold and then hot again, dizzy when stand up, aching all over and feel shattered.
I've been in bed since ds went at 7 but feel too unwell to sleep, plus I'm coughing every 30 seconds.

It's miserable.
Feel better soon everyone!

Acky123 · 08/04/2014 01:11

I felt awful, tired, fuzzy-headed, sweaty and cold to my bones last week for about five days. A bit like flu but milder.

Started on the Saturday, didn't do anything all weekend, had a nosebleed, went home a couple of hours early on Monday as I felt awful and stayed at home on Tuesday.

Still felt poorly Wednesday, tonnes better and pretty much back to normal Thursday afternoon. No snotty cold symptoms, no D&V, just felt crap, tired, sweaty and fuzzy headed.

Definitely a weird bug going about I think.

Hope everybody feels better soon.

MexicanSpringtime · 08/04/2014 01:21

I recommend a hot water bottle for the shivers. Get well soon.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 08/04/2014 01:29

I'm just getting over it. I'm so bloody hungry but my throat was hurting so much. I've got no tonsils so it got into my lymph glands, but antibiotics have really helped. Still so tired, that was the worse thing.

EugenesAxe · 08/04/2014 06:40

Forgive me for asking such a selfish question, but where are you all? Haven't heard of this really in our area (East Surrey).

Hope you all improve very soon and immunity is long lasting!

InMySpareTime · 08/04/2014 07:02

I had it for weeks, just over it now (NW England). Felt really vague, a bit nauseous and dizzy (but really hungry with itHmm), achy joints, exhausted from pathetically small amounts of activity, kept dropping off to sleep, couldn't get warm, sore throat, earache etc.
It does end, but it feels like forever when you're in the middle of it.
I'm never normally ill either, for example when the swine flu did the rounds I got a bit of a cold, DH got full blown flu followed by pneumonia!

KittensoftPuppydog · 08/04/2014 07:12

Scotland. I have it too, I think but has included extremely runny nose.
The hunger is the weirdest thing. I've had to get out of bed at night twice to raid the fridge, but can't eat anything with hard edges.
Husband is away. Dog still needs walking. It is hell.

Badvoc · 08/04/2014 07:57

East Midlands.
Am hoping both dc are back at school tomorrow...ds2 is into his 3rd week off :(
He is very snotty and has got a cough but seems ok in himself. Quite happy playing etc.
Ds1 is still coughing but is eating ok, he is fine til he coughs!
Felt so rough yesterday! Really sick and sore neck. Bluergh.
Dc are going to pils so I am planning a hot bath and a quick visit to my mum then sofa for the rest if the day!
Hope all the little ones are better soon...it's awful seeing them so ill...my ds2 really frightened me last week and the dr was worried too :(
Thank god the dc break up on Friday!

DevonCiderPunk · 08/04/2014 08:05

SW here and have it - chills, aches, and very painful chest/breathing but haven't blown my nose once so definitely not a cold. Rubbish. Get well soon all.

Bestthingtodo · 08/04/2014 08:53

Midlands here, 3 days of feeling rough with chills, exactly like flu but only 3 days, then 2 weeks of utter utter exhaustion. I still have the cough from hell 4 weeks on. DS recovered quicker but turned into chest infection, though at least antibiotics sorted him.

Gone through my family, friends and neighbours like wildfire. Really horrible virus

HPparent · 08/04/2014 08:57

That's weird. I had those symptoms which I thought were a side effect of my blood pressure medication. Had it for 3 weeks, reduced medication and it stopped. Main symptom was dizziness, backache and headaches. Also hungry all the time.

cardibach · 08/04/2014 09:03

South West Wales. I share some of your symptoms with some of my own! I am off work today, although I went in yesterday having been really bad at the weekend - I felt worse o Friday night than I have felt for as long as I can remember.
I had abdominal pain (initially like period pain, then spreading to whole abdomen), lower back pain (like kidney infection), skin so sore I wasn't even comfortable in soft cotton pjs, shivery/goosebumpy, dizziness whenever I moved my head, could eat (although not so much on Saturday) but didn't seem able to get through a whole drink. I slept loads at the weekend and felt more human yesterday, until I went to work when I realised I'd made a bit of an error. Lying on sofa again now. Fed up with it, but oddly comforted that I'm not alone!

50shadesofknackered · 08/04/2014 09:16

I''ve got this now, it started yesterday and j just feel so so awful. Everything aches, even my eyeballs, and my fingers feel stiff. I havn't got a cold and I don't feel sick or anything. I just feel like I can't move. I''ve also got a 14 1/2 hour shift tomorrow that I don't know if I can face, they will go crazy if I call in but think I'm going to have to Sad

50shadesofknackered · 08/04/2014 09:16

I'm in the Midlands btw

Llareggub · 08/04/2014 09:18

I'm also in south west wales. I've had an overwhelming tiredness for over a week now, combined with the worst headache for one or two days. I've also had what felt like period pain. I was so tired on Friday I fell asleep at 5pm and woke up at 8pm with unfed children.

SpecificRim · 08/04/2014 09:21

DH had this. No cold symptoms. No D&V. But wiped out for a week.

Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 09:27

I'm in the midlands too and this is now day 3. I cannot remember ever feeling this ill.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 08/04/2014 09:31

Both DC and DH have had it. DH woke at 3am and was moaning and violently shivering but was radiating heat and covered in sweat. He was so weak and just hurt all over and had a raging headache. DS is only 2yo and on day 2 of being ill was only awake for an hour total and in five minute bursts. Poor dd just sobbed and had a fever and awful leg pain. All sudden onset and depleted all energy stores. GP said it's flu.

luccamum · 08/04/2014 09:49

Oh yes, we have got it here.
DW went down with it on Friday, terrible joint, lung and back pain, streaming nose, dizzy, red hot then freezing cold.
Slept most of weekend.
She's still feeling ghastly, totally wiped out.
Fed her loads of garlic, which seemed to help, and lots of veg. Lots and lots of fluids.
I started feeling ghastly yesterday at work, by the time I got home, I thought someone had beaten me with a baseball bat, I was in such pain. Simultaneously, boiling hot and freezing cold and completely exhausted.
Tried to get up this morning for work, was crying I was in so much pain. Had to call in sick. Don't think work will see me tomorrow either.
Haven't bothered with the doctors, it's a virus, so what can they do?
It's foul. Hoping everyone gets better soon.
We''re in North Yorkshire, and it is definitely going around here.

Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 11:43

I am regretting my decision not to have the flu jab.
Just went downstairs to get a drink and feel exhausted. Can feel heart racing from climbing back up the stairs.

Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 11:44

Also am contemplating gluing a tissue to my nose to save me holding it there all the time.

KittensoftPuppydog · 08/04/2014 11:48

Getting worried now. Feel worse today. Dh abroad. No one to walk dog or get food. Just looked in mirror and scared myself.
Tried paracetamol, anyone got any other ideas?

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 11:49

I'm really going . for the flu jab this week.. This should thread is scary shit.

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 11:50

I feel so sorry for those who can't just go to bed :( a couple of energy drinks and Co codamol is the only thing I can think of.
