To ask if you know what this bug/virus is

This is my first post on AIBU and I realise I probably am being unreasonable to post here rather than on the health board, but I'm feeling a bit desperate and need the traffic.

I have been blessed with a super efficient immune system, which means I very rarely get ill and, if I do catch a cold, I can usually shake it off very quickly. I know the difference between flu and a cold - I haven't had flu for over 30 years, but I recall how bad it was. However, I do have some sort of bug at the moment, which has knocked me sideways and I wonder if anyone has experienced anything like this recently. I am supposed to be taking my kids to see my elderly parents in a few days time, and I cannot risk them catching this.

On Friday, I was working at home and was fine until about 2pm, when the most overwhelming tiredness came upon me. Within a matter of minutes, I was in a pretty poor state - terrible headache (worse at the bottom of my skull at the back, but coming over my ears, causing hissing noises, and over the top of my head, causing a heaviness in my eyes), very bad backache, particularly at the bottom of my spine, and chills. I couldn't get warm, even after getting into bed with my clothes on, so I ran a hot bath. Whilst it was filling up, I had goosebumps upon goosebumps and started to shake.

I warmed up only when I was almost completely submerged in the bath and then managed to sleep for a couple of hours. When I woke, I felt worse. My symptoms now included muscle pain and abdominal pain, so it felt a lot like the beginnings of flu, but there were no cold symptoms and no D&V symptoms. These symptoms have continued on and off until today. The nights are bad, as I can't sleep a great deal and I am bathed in sweat. Oh, and I am also incredibly hungry and thirsty. I must be the only person on the planet who can feel this ill and put weight ON!

At the moment, I don't feel too bad, provided I don't exert myself in any way. All the symptoms have subsided a little, but I feel incredibly weak - like I can't raise myself off the sofa. I hate this. I lost money on Sunday as I am self employed and couldn't go in to do work for my client, even though I had spent ages preparing for it. Moving forward, I have a To Do List as long as my arm and I can't sit around.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms please? My guess is it must be contagious, but I would really like to know how long you need to be clear of something like this before it is safe to mix with others, particularly elderly people.

I'm taking cough mixture (I know it's probably not helping but I just want to stop coughing long enough to go to sleep. An hour's sleep I had last night) and beechams flu plus. I'm also covered in vapour rub, including on my feet as read that was meant to help. It's not, nothing is.

Just had to get out of bed to answer door to the postman. He beat a hasty retreat.

I have no idea how I'm going to get up to get ds from school and then do tea / bath / bed. I just about managed to get him there this morning but that was only with the knowledge that I was going to crawl back into bed when I got home.

It is definitely the worst cough / cold virus I have ever experienced. Everything aches.

Badvoc · 08/04/2014 12:13

My ds2 has been really ill...started with ear infection, then he got conjunctivitis, then tonsilitis and now has a steaming cold and cough.
Ds1 has got a chest infection.
I have been fighting off something for the past 3 weeks - started with sore throat, cough, lost my voice, headache, feeling sick..it's awful.
We have all had the flu jab btw due to asthma....I don't think what we have is flu.

Badvoc · 08/04/2014 12:14

For those of you coughing, I recommend codeine linctus.
Tastes foul, but does help.
Also, if you have a humidifier use it! It has really helped ds1.

Lovesabadboy · 08/04/2014 12:35

I am in North Oxfordshire.
I am never ill - rarely even pick up colds when the rest of the family have them, but this has really knocked me for six.
None of the rest of the family have had it, and thank goodness because eldest DD is just starting to recover from Glandular Fever!

I think I am definitely coming out the other side now, but it has taken 10 days to feel anything like normal.

I don't think it is flu. I think it is just a particularly nasty virus.
I feel so sorry for those of you with little DC with this - there is nothing you can do to really ease things for them apart from painkillers. The joint and muscle pain is absolutely excruciating.

Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 13:34

Ooh new symptom.

Just made myself get out of bed to have a shower to see if it made me feel better (it did not) and I found my skin was kind of numb, I knew the temperature was hot but it didn't feel hot. In particular feeling in hands seems affected. Really really weird. Also have hives rash all over shoulders, neck and legs. I do not look my best today.

Badvoc · 08/04/2014 14:01

Moon..please bear on min scarlet fever is doing the rounds in some parts.
Maybe phone the gp?

Moonfacesmother · 08/04/2014 14:38

I think it's just hives. I get them in response to loads of things, including a temperature or a viral infection.

Urggghhhhhh.

Badvoc · 08/04/2014 14:39

Ah yes...the viral rash.
Ds2 gets it too.
Hope you feel better soon x

I have just come back to the thread and am amazed to see so many fellow sufferers out there. I'm particularly sad for the little ones who are suffering. My children are older, but I'm hoping they don't get it. It is quite strange that I am the one to have been brought down by this whilst it doesn't seem to be touching anyone else here. Usually everyone else has a cold and I don't - as Lovesabadboy said up thread.

I guess I could have picked it up in London early last week, as I was teaching in a room with ghastly not-quite-working-properly air conditioning. That's guaranteed to pass the bugs about.

Someone asked up thread whether this bug is in Surrey - well that's where I am!

I am up on my feet again today and feeling measurably better. Oddly, I now feel quite sick, and I still feel tired and a bit sore around the edges, but it's good to be moving about.

I wish you all well. Perhaps we shall learn a bit more about this new bug in due course.
