To save space they've put the basket and bagging area on the same side one above the other.

Which means at any given checkout there is a completely symmetrical arrangement, and choice, of which bagging area to decant into.

No sign, just toss a coin.

Plenty of room for a 20 pound sign... but that would be far far too sensible.

What do you mean? I don't get it....

LineRunner · 06/04/2014 20:46

Don't you just work to the right?

Waterfalls1 · 06/04/2014 20:48

Usually have only seen these at express stores

ChelworthBrond · 06/04/2014 20:50

You put the basket on one side and fill up the bagging area on the opposite side. That's how they all work. The bagging area for one unit is under the basket area of it's right-hand neighbour to save space.

AchyFox · 06/04/2014 20:58

Not these ones, they're symmetrical, unlike the old type.

Don't you just work to the right?

You are right linerunner, it is the right, but how did you know ?

The great Louis CK. I know we're not American (or at least I'm not) but he's bang on the money for me:

“We have white people problems in America. That’s what we have. White people problems. You know what that is? That’s where your life is amazing, so you just make up shit to be upset about. People in other countries have real problems. Like “Oh shit, they’re cutting all our heads off, today!” Things like that. Here, we make things up to be upset about. Like “How come I have to choose a language on the ATM. It’s bullshit. I shouldn’t have to do that. I’m American.”

zoobaby · 06/04/2014 21:03

Oh yeah. They're stupid. I managed to approach a bank of about 8 where the entrance was midway down the bank. Because they were all empty, I had to look at the very first checkout and count down the line to figure out which side I needed to use. I was like "WTF?" for a good 3 secs. Grin

AchyFox · 06/04/2014 21:11

I see what you're saying Chelworth, but doesn't that mean that there's going to be conflict when someones trying to unload their big pizza from their basket area and simultaneously their neighbour is trying to load their 18-pack of loo roll right above where they're trying to get the pizza out ?

I was just moving stuff vertically.Blush

Oh shit, theyre cutting all our heads off, today!

Yeah, good point, well made, Emma; pity the person who designed this checkout appears to have precisely this problem.Wink

OldRoan · 06/04/2014 21:20

Ahh, but in my local waitrose both basket and bags go to the left!

AchyFox · 06/04/2014 21:23

Waitrose leans to the left ??? Shock

I hate these ones (if it's the ones I think you mean) because the bagging area is tiny! If you buy more than a few things they don't fit in, yet of course the machine goes crazy if you take something away from the bagging area... Not suitable for even a baskets worth of shopping unless you want to precariously tower it all on top of each other then put it back in the basket and start bagging up!

AchyFox · 06/04/2014 21:27

So, Oldroan you do work vertically, not one side to the other ?

Dunno, Achy, too much time spent with the Hot Builder in B&Q I suspect, where that seems to be the express etiquette. Smile

The B&Q ones are FAR TOO LOUD btw. The bloody voice, 'INSERT YOUR CARD NOW ' gives me a headache.

IAmNotAMindReader · 06/04/2014 21:34

Tesco aren't known for their bright ideas with regards to self service till arrangements. My local shuts off all their manned tills at 10pm and makes everyone use the self service which is a pain in the hoop if you have a trolley full of shopping and this is the only time you could do it.

Topseyt · 06/04/2014 21:36

With the exception of "scan and pack" I just simply do not do self-service checkouts, especially if I am buying more than a handful of items.

I just don't get on with them, and probably end up with steam coming out of my ears as they infuriate me with "unexpected item in the bagging area".

AchyFox · 06/04/2014 21:46

Tesco aren't known for their bright ideas

Indeed. They still insist on procuring bags that don't open.
Everytime I walk away with about half a dozen bags because that's the one that opened first.

They have these in one of our tesco expresses (we have several). Fucking useless design if you ask me. To be different it goes to the left.

The others are all the normal basket to the left and bags to the right design thank god. Much easier. We don't have waitrose here.

Glitterandglue · 06/04/2014 22:22

Tell me about it, IAmNotAMindReader! I often shop between 10pm and 3am because I'm a night person, and for the last year or so my only option has been self-service. As I often go on the same night I am now very friendly with the poor guy who mans these, because I interact with him more doing self bloody service than I would if he was just manning a normal till. Every ten seconds it's PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE.

I said to him once, "One day, I'm going to go through a whole shop and this isn't going to go off." It hasn't happened yet...

OohOod · 06/04/2014 22:23

Ours are all basket on the left and bag on the right. I KNEW it felt wrong!

OldRoan · 07/04/2014 07:13

Yep! Everything on the same side.

Madness - why can't there just be one (logical) design?!

AfricanExport · 07/04/2014 07:16

Emma. Grin

OwlCapone · 07/04/2014 07:26

Surely the checkout at the end only has a bag/basket area on one side?
