To save space they've put the basket and bagging area on the same side one above the other.

Which means at any given checkout there is a completely symmetrical arrangement, and choice, of which bagging area to decant into.

No sign, just toss a coin.

Plenty of room for a 20 pound sign... but that would be far far too sensible.

Yes, but if there's a long row with people in the way....

Still think a sign with an arrow makes most sense.

I never use the self service tills in the supermarket unless I have very few items.

But the ones in B&Q drive me insane - had to use them recently as they had no manned tills open.
The voice is really loud and gets very annoyed if you don't put the item into the bagging area immediately after scanning it. Regardless of the fact that the item may be quite heavy and awkward to manoeuvre.

Also got very annoyed that I seemingly hadn't put the bath chain I'd just scanned into the bagging area when actually I had and it was just too light to register.

Can you tell I really don't like them!

They are shit

Sixgeese · 07/04/2014 21:23

We have those in our local co op, the member of staff who mans them has to keep voiding the double scan as we try to bring it back trying to avoid the scanner to put it in the bag, all the time muttering under our breath "stupid design"

And they seem more sensitive than the more sensibly designed ones, you have to bring it back around your body at arms length to avoid the double scan.

Update:

I've checked these checkouts again today and they are tiered and designed for the items to be moved up from the basket area into the bagging area directly above.

Not left to right as alluded to by some upthread.

Update 2:

Well now, a month on, they've attempted a fix by putting a sharp plastic partition on the left side of each checkout, seeking to "herd" customers into using the right hand side.

Bravo Tesco, heaven forfend you might blight your reputation for dimwittedness by simply mounting a sign with an arrow.
