Not an alcoholic, sometimes it helps to get through the day. Anyone else?

Define in the morning?

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2014 22:09

If you're using alcohol to 'get through the day ' then it is possible you have a problem.

What's so bad in the morning that alcohol helps?

ICanSeeTheSun · 02/04/2014 22:09

the only time really is when I have had a stressful night shift, not that i do night shift any more.

Janethegirl · 02/04/2014 22:09

Not alcohol, but do need a cup of tea to kick start me. I couldn't drink alcohol as I need to drive to work, but I'd love one by 10am most days.

stargirl1701 · 02/04/2014 22:09

Um, no.

Drinking alcohol in the morning 'to get through the day' would indicate an alcohol problem to me.

I think you need help, OP.

phantomnamechanger · 02/04/2014 22:10

breakfast? mid morning? do you start early and carry on ?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/04/2014 22:10

Depends if you could get through the day without it or not.

I presume you're not driving.

It's not something that's done by many people, but that doesn't make it wrong I suppose.

do you drink EVERY DAY? or do you have a couple of totally dry days each week to let your body recover? how many units are you drinking?

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 02/04/2014 22:11

Alcohol at anytime to help you get through the day is a problem IMO

firesidechat · 02/04/2014 22:12

I assume you mean an alcoholic drink?

Not me.

Isn't that one of the signs of being an alcoholic?

ilovesooty · 02/04/2014 22:14

I would say that if you need a drink in the morning to get through the day you are alcohol dependent.

RedPencilPot · 02/04/2014 22:14

Not normal, I'd be worried if I needed a drink in the morning.

BethCalavicci · 02/04/2014 22:14

Um, if you think you need a drink in the mornings just to 'see you through the day' then that definitely sounds like a problem, sorry.
This coming from someone who loves a drink or three

firesidechat · 02/04/2014 22:15

I always think it very odd when I see people at airports drinking beer at 7 am and that are quite possible on a different time zone. It just seems all wrong somehow.

MarvellousMabel · 02/04/2014 22:15

No.

And I think I'm pretty lax about alcohol.

Lozzy123 · 02/04/2014 22:16

Well I will have a cup tea with brandy in it sometimes. Or if I'm in a rush I will drink it straight.

OP posts:
firesidechat · 02/04/2014 22:16

they not that

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2014 22:16

Sorry but completely wrong.
Alcohol shouldn't be used to get you through the day. It's called dependency.

FitzgeraldProtagonist · 02/04/2014 22:16

Bloody Mary on a Sunday morn? Buck's Fizz for Xmas breakfast? Champagne breakfast birthdays/anniversaries? Beer on a beach holiday at brunch?

All socially acceptable.

Taking the edge off in the morning-not so much. Think point is whether you are carrying on, as said above.

firesidechat · 02/04/2014 22:16

Windup. Yes?

Hawkshaw · 02/04/2014 22:17

I'm sorry, but you are an alcoholic of some kind. There are functional alcoholics who can hide it, there are people passed out drunk in the gutter. The ones who are hiding it are in a sort of metaphorical gutter and would all be happier out of it. Nobody needs a drink to get through the day and if you're starting in the morning you are dependent on alcohol. How much do you drink a day?

expatinscotland · 02/04/2014 22:17

Watch out, all the Temperance Movement folks are out to tell you you are a raging alkie!

Are you talking about champers at brunch from time to time? Or a slug of Bailey's in the morning coffee on the odd occasion?

If so, don't see a problem, but on MN, it seems to be.

ICanSeeTheSun · 02/04/2014 22:17

What is the diffrence between a morning drink to let say an evening one.

Lozzy123 · 02/04/2014 22:18

No I don't usually carry on
