To have a drink in the morning sometimes

Not an alcoholic, sometimes it helps to get through the day. Anyone else?

Well played Coldlight.

whatwhatinthewhatnow · 02/04/2014 22:30

Drinking in the morning is not what alarms me here. Drinking to get through the day, that's the indicator of a problem.

There are many myths about what makes an alcoholic. I don't drink in the mornings, I don't get paralytic, I can go weeks without a drink etc etc - if you are dependant on alcohol in ANY way, you are an alcoholic.

BumPotato · 02/04/2014 22:30

...ooh, baileys in morning coffee, now you're talking, expat! It's about to be the Easter hols too...

PorkPieandPickle · 02/04/2014 22:32

My grandad had a brandy every morning at 11. It was his only drink., He was not alcohol dependant. He said it would keep him alive... He lived to 88.

As a pp said, it's not drinking in the morning that's a problem it's drinking to get through the day.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/04/2014 22:32

There's nothing absolutely 'wrong' with drinking in the morning.

There's a lot wrong with doing it 'to get me through the day'.

There's a lot more with doing it, and needing reassurance its normal.

And there's a fuckload wrong with doing it, and insisting it's perfectly normal and anyone who suggests otherwise is part of 'the temperance movement'.

I'm tempted to agree with fireside but OP - if you're really worried, surely there's a pretty simple solution? Not easy, necessarily, but simple. If you're so worried about it, then do without the morning slug of brandy for a month. If you can't do that - if you can't actually do it for a week, or if for some reason you feel it'd be too hard right now because everything is going wrong - then you've basically answered your own question.

Lj8893 · 02/04/2014 22:34

Nope.

The only time I used to occasionally have a drink in the morning was when I was working as a flight attendant and I would get home after a night flight and occasionally have a small baileys to help me sleep.

Or if back in my wild days, I would have an all night bendy and my last drink may have been 7 or 8 am before finally giving in and going to bed. before going back to the pub

Janethegirl · 02/04/2014 22:36

If it's only one small glass each morning, it's probably ok. I couldn't drink brandy tho' that early. You will know if it's a real problem you need to sort out however. Head in sand doesn't really work.

olgaga · 02/04/2014 22:43

Shocking.

You do realise you will probably die "early" and miss out on spending the last 15-20 years of your life being "cared for" while suffering various age-related conditions?

How selfish and short sighted of you Grin .

expatinscotland · 02/04/2014 22:46

I really hope you have stepped up your fruit and veg to ten portions a day, too, OP.

The government says so.

If not, you will surely die prematurely.

But you are a raging alkie so will surely die tomorrow.

Janethegirl · 02/04/2014 22:47

Love it olgaga

TrinityRhino · 02/04/2014 22:48

speaking from experience

I would urge you to explore your drinking habits, read up on recommended drinking and go and join the brave babes bus thread

expatinscotland · 02/04/2014 22:48

She said it was 'sometimes'.

Please stop! It is only acceptable if it is Tattigner at brunch.

Lozzy123 · 02/04/2014 22:49

Yes I'm loving all the smart comments

I think it's different if people are on nightshift and have a drink in themorning when they get home. But to wake up at the start of the day and have a drink does seem to indicate there could be a problem. But I suppose it's up to the individual to decide if they need help or if they are quite happy with drinking in the morning.

JuniperHeartwand · 02/04/2014 22:56

Google the CAGE questionnaire OP. Might enlighten you.

FuckyNell · 02/04/2014 22:56

Yes lozzy you are an alcoholic.

DontCareAboutYourShoes · 02/04/2014 22:56

I'm hardcore. I take vodka shots to the eyeball before I've even left my bed.
