is not flattering, looks odd, and needs to be softened and changed to a bitter chocolate colour with small amounts of grey being allowed through.

I see nothing but "Cruella de Ville" look-a-likes for women of a certain age these days.

Bitchy aint I!

I keep being told that I need to cut my hair soon as well. I'll soon be 40 which seems to be the cut off point round here.

My hair isn't really that long, just above bra strap length, but it's swishy and glossy and in the best condition it's ever been so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I'm not keen on dyed jet black hair on any age to be honest, unless you're naturally black, it can look quite harsh if you don't have the right colouring

Sounds lovely, definitely keep it! You see some women who reach 40/50 and get that really short unforgiving haircut as if it's mandatory. Short hair is far more difficult to pull off than shoulder length.

I don't have to do anything to it. Get out the shower, rub with a towel a bit, brush. Job done. I might swish the hair dryer over it if I'm going straight out.

If I had it cut I might have to fiddle around actually styling it

Suzannewithaplan · 01/04/2014 12:50

I used to dye mine jet black, for max witchy-ness, then I fancied a change of image, so now it's platinum blonde, with dark roots, I'm so demure :o

lynniep · 01/04/2014 12:56

I'm not keen on dyed black hair on most people because roots show so very quickly. And it does baffle me on old ladies when they have massive white roots. But it does make them distinctive so whatever floats their boat!
I can't even get away with black hair, and I have very dark brown hair naturally. Black just washes me out. Some girls just look gorgeous with it though - snow white skin and bright green or blue eyes and jet black hair - love that.

Yeah hoohah I think the hairdresser was right about hair colour fading as well as greying. I've read melanin production decreases with age in white people which might explain it. The OP was being a bit of a stirer though....dyed black hair doesn't look bad on older women, it can look quite cool, there's just a reason it doesn't tend to look natural.

tallwivglasses · 02/04/2014 00:46

What's your hair like OP? How do you envisage it changing as you grow older?

I'd really like to know...
