I have told DH he is not getting a new desktop.

It will cost over £1000 ( just on the tower)as he is a gamer, and it 'needs' to be a pc that can handle 3 eveonline accounts at 1 time with 3 seperate monitors.

We are in debt and I really don't want the plunge deeper.

Am I being financially abusive saying no to this.

This is he only enjoyment. He doesn't go out or drink, smoke, gamble. He does his fair share on childcare and will do housework if I ask of him ( I like doing housework so it very rare)

yes of course financial abuse is a real thing , this isn't though

TheCatThatSmiled · 30/03/2014 13:05

It's not financial abuse. I do sympathise with your DH, but 1k when you are already in debt is not on. Tell him to check eBay, or even amazon for a comparable one.

YANBU

I call rhubarb on the not finding a compatible card. I'm with Preciousbane and think he might be trying to wheedle a new tower from it all. If you post up the specs, make and model of the card and motherboard, you'll probably find someone able to help.

caruthers · 30/03/2014 13:09

If you're not geeky enough to know the specs there is software out there that will do that for you and allow you to copy the specs so you could post them here and get suggestions.

A grand is a huge amount although a mac owner probably wouldn't think so Shock

FlockOfTwats · 30/03/2014 13:29

So why doesn't he buy a new motherboard? Then a graphics card that is compatible with that? That seems more sensible than buying a whole new PC.

And no it's not financial abuse. Financial abuse is where one person keeps the other short of money in order to control/abuse them.

BertieBotts · 30/03/2014 13:44

Problem with a new mobo is that requires all new parts. New mobo basically means entire new PC.

But you can get a gaming machine for less than 1k.

ICanSeeTheSun · 30/03/2014 15:07

Will have to look around.

He will have to wait for June, as his mum gives him £100 for his birthday and his father gives him £100. I will chip in £100 and the DC can give him £20 for Father's Day towards it.

He has 3 months then to save up the rest.

Argh. Not financial abuse. Tell your husband to grow up.

TillyTellTale · 30/03/2014 15:27

Eve online? Times three?

WTF? I tried Eveonline. Boring, boring, boring...

Look, he does not need to play three Eve accounts at once. You're in debt and he still wants entertainment. He can compromise by adjusting his rig to something that can run something fun one Eve online account at a time. If he says that's too boring, that's more to do with Eveonline itself... He can try something else, that's interesting enough that one character can absorb your attention.

Path of Exile and TERA online are both free-to-play.

YouTheCat · 30/03/2014 16:10

Why doesn't he try Star Trek online? It's free to play.

Eve is crap tbh.

HermioneWeasley · 30/03/2014 16:42

He's being childish and irresponsible.

First priority is to clear your debts and then create a cushion of MINIMUM 3 months salary, plus a couple of grand for emergencies - boiler going, roof needing replacing etc.

Then he can start saving up for his expensive hobby.

ICanSeeTheSun · 30/03/2014 16:54

Agree it's rubbish, but he enjoys it
