To expect guests to use the downstairs GUEST toilet

And not the upstairs one? It really narks me. I have a 3 yo ds and whenever we have friends over, invariably, the upstairs toilet gets used by someone when there is a perfectly functioning one downstairs. I just don't understand it. Even when I've requested that people use the downstairs one the upstairs one gets used. The upstairs bathroom is carpeted because we haven't got round to tiling it yet (lack of funds) and I'm sick of cleaning piss off the carpet when someone can't get their child to aim properly.

If the DC are playing upstairs they would use the nearest loo wouldn't they?

As an adult I hate using downstairs loos, I have IBS and am too worried that people can hear me er, break wind.

Put an outside lock on it and lock it when people are visiting, if you're that bothered about it.

Suggest putting a sign on the door saying loo not working, please use the downstairs loo.

You actually call it the "guest" toilet? It's the downstairs toilet, surely?

Count yourself lucky you have two toilets

YABU. Any loo is fair game if you need to go, and you should make your guests feel comfortable, not like half the facilities are off limits.

I am not getting the angst at all.

I gather from Mn that the rooted preference for using the upstairs loo is (except for cases such as Famzilla's) down to nosy people wanting to poke around your upstairs. Especially if they're gone a suspiciously long time and come down asking questions about your birth control or the wallpaper on your feature wall.

YANBU for adults, YABU for children if playing upstairs.

We have a grown-up family member who invariably, usually not long after arriving at our house, takes himself upstairs to use our family bathroom...and stays in there a loooong time. He is relatively young and has no medical problems. But the DCs complain it still smells at bath time. This is not reasonable behaviour. He lives nearby and should go before leaving home!

Our upstairs bathroom also has a difficult-to-keep-clean floor and I hate people trudging around it with shoes on.

We have found that installing a near-impossible-to-open stair gate helps us to control this issue somewhat.

Overnight guests are free to use whichever toilet they wish.

I hate using a downstairs loo in friends houses.I just dont feel right sitting there while within inches there are adults having conversations and children playing.

Kids generally don't play upstairs, the majority of ds's toys are downstairs. It just winds me up a bit, mainly because the upstairs loo is carpeted and the downstairs one isn't.

I would always go upstairs if I could because of noises, I vividly remember hearing people use my mil's downstairs loo and also the one at my dad's house.

Saying that, I would never pee on your floor or nosey round your house maybe a quick peek in the medicine cabinet

Going upstairs specifically to use the toilet when there is one downstairs is rude IMO, obviously kids don't know any different so if they are upstairs and need to go, you can't hold that against them. But for adults to do this, is completely out of order.

Another one here who isn't comfortable using the downstairs loo in other people's houses due to the acoustics.

I think it's slightly unreasonable and a bit uptight.

It doesn't make sense to go upstairs if they are downstairs playing.

Multiple loos are luxury for many though.

I wouldn't allow guests to use my en-suite. Is that really so odd?

I would use the one furthest away from everyone else if I could, especially if it's a modern house with thin walls. Nothing worse than hearing people peeing or farting when there's a lull in the conversation or lack or noise in the rest of the house.
