to not understand why people consider McDonalds to be a "treat"

TalkinPeace · 13/03/2014 15:22

if I want a family "treat" meal I go somewhere with fresh, favoursome food made especially for us.

Why do people take their kids somewhere that sells the lowest common denominator of food and call it a "treat" ?

Ah, x-posts. At least I was sort of right though Grin.

WestieMamma · 13/03/2014 16:45

I could kill for a sausage and egg Mcmuffin.

ouryve · 13/03/2014 16:46

Well, just for balance, my kids don't like McDs. And I'm glad because, last time I went there, it was a hellish experience, including having to wait, while our food got cold, for disabled friendly seating, and the food was vile. I left feeling both bloated and still hungry at the same time. DS2 wouldn't touch anything but a few fries and DS1 did eat most of his meal but said he never wanted to go back ever again (it was him who asked to go, in the first place!)

ormirian · 13/03/2014 16:46

Because they like it.

I can't stand it - the smell of the chicken nuggets literally makes me nauseous. But my children like it. That is why it's a treat.

"Le Big Mac" is French.

"La Big Mac is Spanish.

DS is 3 and had his first McDonalds last week. He loved the chicken nuggets and the toy. We probably won't go again for another few months. Maybe longer. And that's why it's a "treat". It's cheap, quick food and a free toy that keeps kids happy and makes a change from their everyday food.

Fruit wouldn't be a treat because it's something healthy that most people would have quite often. McDonalds, and any junk food that people like but rarely eat, is a treat.

Impatientismymiddlename · 13/03/2014 16:48

When my gran was in hospital I used to pop in mcdonalds and buy her porridge and a hot chocolate on my way in to visit her (visitng was from 10 am). It was much better than the muck that the hospital were offering for breakfast and ensured that my gran hot something hot to eat in the mornings.
I also sometimes take my kids to macdonalds for orange juice, hash browns and fruit bags when we have been for an early morning visit to the park.
They have the very occasional happy meal too which is a real treat (as it's about once a year).
An occasional treat = something that the person enjoys on an occasional basis.
We eat fresh wholesome food almost every day so that isn't an occasional treat.

TheArticFunky · 13/03/2014 16:49

It wouldn't be a treat for me because I don't like the taste. It's a treat for my children because they like it and they like the pointless toy that comes with the happy meal.

For me wine and chocolate are a treat. They are not good for me either. I consider them a treat because I don't have them every day and you should only have them in moderation.

TheKnightsThatSayNee · 13/03/2014 16:49

I'm a student so I'm pretty poor. If dd and I are in town I don't want to grab a sandwich somewhere I can't sit down. If we go to md's (she has fish fingers a fruit bag and a milk) then for a fiver we can both eat (I get a fillet burger and a tea) and sit down, its clean and has some where for dd to play for 10 mins while I finish my tea. It's not exactly the ritz but I hate forking out for a 'proper' restaurant meal just for a quick lunch. We go to restaurants as well but in the evening with friends or family.

AgaPanthers · 13/03/2014 16:49

I can't believe no-one has mentioned that the best thing on the McDonalds menu is a Double Sausage & Egg McMuffin with a hashbrown.

Impatientismymiddlename · 13/03/2014 16:50

Scotch eggs and jam donuts or Eccles cakes are not much nutritionally better than mcdonalds, if not actually worse than mcdonalds.

NurseyWursey · 13/03/2014 16:51

No Aga it has to be the bagel!

Worra, I think the difference is in part due to the way Maccas is marketed differently in Europe to the US. Believe it or not McDonalds here is slightly more upmarket than the US.

The US is purely about the cost and the brand.

In Europe the cost is important. But the branding is slightly different in that there is more concern about the ethics. (Free trade coffee, free range eggs, local beef etc). If you also look at the decoration in a European Maccas its different too. Modern Mcdonalds have moved away from the plastic red and yellow which is still used commonly in the States (designed to get people to leave faster) to the European more relaxing, calm and 'ethically associated' green and brown.

If you've seen the recent ads for the McCafe range its a reflection of this change.

It varies throughout the world, but for the most part European McDonalds are largely pretty similar.

MajorGrinch · 13/03/2014 16:51

Any meal out or takeaway is a "treat" because we only have 1 or 2 a month.

Something that you don't have often, is bad for you & that tastes great is a treat!!

Given the that feeding the 4 of us as Maccy D's costs just as much as getting a chippy or kebab I definitely class it as a treat.

YoureAShoe · 13/03/2014 16:52

TiP as I said earlier, I used to work there. Go in, order a double cheeseburger - ask for a fresh one. Order a chicken mayo without the bun. Trust me. Put the chicken mayo between the two beef patties. Bam. You will have to understand why people like it after that.

Smilesandpiles · 13/03/2014 16:52

Bagel shmagel, the best thing on the breakfast the breakfast wrap with brown sauce or the pancakes with syrup.

LEMmingaround · 13/03/2014 16:52

because it is fucking lovely it is - but im on a diet so you can all fuck off

ormirian · 13/03/2014 16:53

I consider a lot of really nice red wine to be a treat. It isn't good for me. I'd be much better off drinking something healthy, organic and non-alcoholic but that wouldn't be a treat.

WorraLiberty · 13/03/2014 16:54

That's really interesting, thanks Red

I wonder if the BBC would pay me to travel around the world, sampling the different McDonalds? Grin

almondcake · 13/03/2014 16:55

Do burgerking and macdonalds sell vegetarian food in the US?
