to not understand why people consider McDonalds to be a "treat"

TalkinPeace · 13/03/2014 15:22

if I want a family "treat" meal I go somewhere with fresh, favoursome food made especially for us.

Why do people take their kids somewhere that sells the lowest common denominator of food and call it a "treat" ?

OP posts:
gordyslovesheep · 13/03/2014 16:15

because it's quick - that's why we go - we are usually one our way back from CAMH's (once a month family meeting) and in a hurry to make it home for their dad to pick them up - it's quick, relatively cheap and I don't have time to cook

for myself - I go when I am hung over and resemble an empty husk - nothing fixes me more than a full fat coke and a filthy burger

UriGeller · 13/03/2014 16:15

I don't care if children like it. I'll never take any of mine to McDonald's, I don't think food should be a "Treat" any more than it should be a punishment.

Parents should be saying, "If you're naughty again you'll be eating McDonald's for dinner" Wink

YoureAShoe · 13/03/2014 16:17

Ah this has made me miss the days (you may want to sit down TIP Grin) I worked at mcd's. I ate there all the time. Their staff meals are super cheap! I bet you couldn't get me a burger, chips and drink for £2.49?!

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 13/03/2014 16:17

Celia You need this book - the recipe is in there.

I travel for work and go to McDonalds more than I would like to. I don't mind their breakfasts and they are good and very cheap for that.

I once went to Costa coffee instead and it cost over SEVEN POUNDS for a too very small coffee and a disgusting breakfast sandwich that was fridge cold and then warmed up on a george forman type grill.

I would rather not have lunch there, but sometimes they are the only choice. My ideal 'lunch on the run' is Toby Carvery, but there isn't always one available.

I think we have one thing to be thankful to McDs for in that they probably killed off the horror that was the Little Thief Chef, which IMHO is even worse than McDs and probably 2 to 3 times the price.

Smilesandpiles · 13/03/2014 16:17

Maccy D's was the main part in my master plan to piss off my weight obsessed co-workers.

NOTHING stinks out an office for hours like a Maccy d's bacon roll. Especially if you leave it hidden on or in your desk until lunch. Grin

They stopped the snippy little comments soon enough, although I did feel slightly guilty for 5 minutes for my part in thier falling off the diet waggon.

For this I OWE them my custom.

GossamerHailfilter · 13/03/2014 16:18

Mcdonald is disgusting and people who go there should be ashamed of themselves.

BK on the other hand is lushious and now I fancy a Whopper.

GossamerHailfilter · 13/03/2014 16:18

*McDonalds

WorraLiberty · 13/03/2014 16:18

Of course certain foods should be a treat

Otherwise some people would be eating doughnuts all day, every day.

What a ridiculous outlook.

Theodorous · 13/03/2014 16:18

I do so love the smugness of this site. Who actually cares? And shall we measure and compare the fat and salt content of you darling Boden approved fresh (apparently) meal? Stay at home and eat woven lentils

ListenToTheLady · 13/03/2014 16:19

You get a toy.
You don't have to cook.
It's cheap.
As we only go occasionally, the DC find it exciting and so it's a "treat".

I can take or leave McDs and tbh I used to find it horrifying, but I've realised the point of it now I have DC. It's predictable – the food is bland, there are no bits to pick out or fuss about, and contrary to what some people think, you can get reasonably healthy options. It's full of other families and you can make a noise. You won't get a snooty cafe owner or other customers tutting because your toddler cried. A bloke comes round and gives your kids a balloon. Etc.

fideline · 13/03/2014 16:20

Deep-seated self-loathing?

SolomanDaisy · 13/03/2014 16:20

My DS had a kids meal in Ikea a few weeks ago. Hot dogs, chips, drink, ice cream. It was very cheap sand the hot dogs are chicken, but I'm not sure what would make it nutritionally superior to McDs.

Smilesandpiles · 13/03/2014 16:20

Cheap and cheerful sums it up.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/03/2014 16:21

Uri, do you never treat yourself to something to eat or drink just because you want it?

NurseyWursey · 13/03/2014 16:21

If no food is a treat then I feel less guilty sat on the sofa right now eating a bag of Mini Eggs.

Kentonian · 13/03/2014 16:22

We have McDonalds on average, several times a year. I am sure there are families who eat there several times a week.

I remember passing a drive in and sit in McDonalds on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed to the brim of families. I wondered and judged why they did not cook and chose McDonalds for Sunday lunch.

fideline · 13/03/2014 16:22

TBF, I did occasionally take the DC when they were smaller but their excitement at cheap plastic toy was outweighed by my hatred off the food.

Easier to buy them some plastic tat from the pound shop and go somewhere with edible meals.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 13/03/2014 16:22

Because it's nice and surely anything nice that you don't have regularly is deemed as a treat.

gordyslovesheep · 13/03/2014 16:23

now come on worra using food as a treat - baaaaad and destined to lead ti a life time of food issues ...labeling all non organic, hand spun, locally sourced food as the product of Satan - no problem at all Grin

southeastastra · 13/03/2014 16:24

proof op that mcds is the 'lowest common denominator' or is that just your lazy observation

and surely you know youself the answer to your op. just fancy a thread to stir people up perhaps?

AgaPanthers · 13/03/2014 16:24

Marco Pierre White also likes them

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1544195/Star-chef-backs-the-Big-Mac.html

One of the greatest chefs ever.

Twighlightsparkle · 13/03/2014 16:24

To however said ikea found is " wholesome" erm I think not, it strikes me when I've had the misfortune to have it as poor quality.

Give me a McDonald's anyday!

gordyslovesheep · 13/03/2014 16:25

tell me OP what effect does artisan bread and dairy free spread have on a banging hangover?

floppyfanjo · 13/03/2014 16:26

A happy meal is £2.25 - it includes a drink and a toy

A John Lewis childs lunch bag is £4.95 .

Your kids are hungry, you are stuck in town, you are short of money, where do you go ?

Where else can you feed your kids something hot,get them a drink and a piece of plastic tat all for £2.25 ?

WorraLiberty · 13/03/2014 16:26

Take a bag of Haribo and go to the front of the class Grin
