to not understand why people consider McDonalds to be a "treat"

TalkinPeace · 13/03/2014 15:22

if I want a family "treat" meal I go somewhere with fresh, favoursome food made especially for us.

Why do people take their kids somewhere that sells the lowest common denominator of food and call it a "treat" ?

I don't think that you have twigged that MN is a parallel universe yet MaryLou62.

JapaneseMargaret · 14/03/2014 18:36

Thanks, shoe. Grin I always find myself saying it in an Essex accent, even though I am a Kiwi.

and look at the dry soggy piece of shit

'Dry soggy'. That is some mean feat.

Spero · 14/03/2014 18:53

I shall enter MacDonalds in future, eyes firmly closed, singing Viva Forever off key so I don't have to confront this dry, soggy, piece of shit in a bun.

I would LOVE to know where this MacDonalds is. Somalia?

hunreeeal · 14/03/2014 19:25

McDonalds is a treat because it tastes better than a lettuce leaf topped with an olive and other boring healthy so-called "treats". It's happy food, not miserable diet food.

RufusTheReindeer · 14/03/2014 19:31

Shame talkingpeace has left the thread,

And as she is very knowledgable about healthy eating she knows exactly why people like mcDonalds. High fat, high sugar and high salt all equal very tasty to a lot of people Grin

And what child can resist a toy!

JapaneseMargaret · 14/03/2014 19:41

I have to say, I do actually think salads are a treat. I used to LOVE Pizza Express salads way more than their pizzas, although I suspect they have more calories in them than a Big Mac. I love conjuring up salads at home, and one of thing New York does really, really well, I've always thought, is salad bars. Great alternative to sarnies at lunch.

I also like the odd McDonalds from time to time.

This thread has gone really well, hasn't it. Grin

My children wouldn't consider Mc Donald's to be a treat. But I do. I bloody love a quarter pounder with cheese.

Namechangeforamo · 14/03/2014 20:21

My dc always loved mcd for a treat, the little ones still do. But the older 2 have precociously moved on to prefering the local Italian. I can't fault their taste but its a damn sight less handier and more expensive than mcds

Spero · 14/03/2014 20:23

They wouldn't be wearing berets and smoking Gaulloise and saying 'niiiiice' every now and then would they?

TalkinPeace · 14/03/2014 20:34

Rufus
I've not left.
Just been reading while eating pizza Smile

Actually, I do have to say that while I have occasionally eaten in McDonalds, they really are a shit company who peddle nasty food and treat their employees like dirt. Read 'McLibel' and see if those burgers are still so tasty.

Rommell · 14/03/2014 20:46

Ooh, I do love a good salad bar. I used to go into this place in the city - there were several branches of it - and it was just wall to wall salads, croutons, heavy mayo, the lot. Fucking lovely. Very cheap too as I recall. Can't remember the name of it though.

VikingLady · 14/03/2014 20:53

The frothers insisting McD's food is all extremely poor quality (pink slime, beef penises and manky bits, 5% poo etc) - NOT IN THE UK! Honestly, can you seriously not assimilate the information many posters have given? In the UK, burgers are made from good cuts of beef (naturally cut with beef fat to make it juicy and carry the flavour, not added separately) and salt to enhance flavour. No poo, no willies.

The only bits of a McD meal in the UK that will do you any harm as part of a balanced diet is the sugar, and it is relatively easy to cut back on that. Otherwise it is fine. We need fat including saturated fat, healthy adult kidneys naturally excrete excess salt (although you want to keep an eye on it with kids).

I craved beef and beef fat when I was pg in the 2nd trimester and craved salt towards the end. Your body does need some of this stuff! Just don't go nuts over it!

Sorry for the "!"s. I'm a little bit aggravated.

RufusTheReindeer · 14/03/2014 21:07

I loves me some pizza!!!!!

englishrosie · 14/03/2014 21:46

YABU. a treat is subjective
if you enjoy something and don't have it often then yes it can be called a treat. get over yourself

LynetteScavo · 14/03/2014 21:52

I bet there are people who don't think of visiting London or New York a treat, and would prefer somewhere "fresh". I take my DC to London for the day as a treat. Sometimes we even have a McDonalds while we're there. Grin

Which is why they taste so good!!!

hunreeeal · 14/03/2014 22:56

The buns in McDs are made mainly of sugar, y'know.

Even better Grin

NigellasDealer · 14/03/2014 23:02

right i am straight to maccdees tomorrow, thanks everyone

Cabrinha · 14/03/2014 23:27

Too many pages to read.

I grew up somewhere where the nearest McD was a 2 hour drive. I was 16 before I had my first one. My parents were too poor to buy take away food anyway.

THAT is what made it feel like a treat when I had one. And 30 years later, it still has that slight feeling of being so.

Some of it tastes like cardboard, but a Big Tasty with Bacon is flipping lush!!!

OneOfOurLilkasIsMissing · 14/03/2014 23:30

Great choice Nigella Grin

fuzzpig · 15/03/2014 21:02

Think we will stop by at McD tomorrow if we end up in town. It's been a while.

My DCs will be happy. They eat quite well most of the time. Sometimes DD bugs me for a happy meal, other times she asks when I'll be able to get lychees and physalis. Who knew somebody was capable of liking more than one 'class' of food, huh? Just as DD likes to listen to One Direction and Bizet.

Because children don't naturally get worked up about liking what they are supposed to like, or what people think of their tastes. They just like what makes them happy, and don't need to analyse or wring their hands over hidden meanings or the worthiness of it. Adults could learn a thing or two. :)
