Ralph, I remember yu from an earlier thread, using the term 'half-caste' to describe yourself. I think you are a little bit ignorant about the history of these dolls and the importance of using such a term.

Did your parents ever bring this sort of stuff up?

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 22:01

Treacle

Bring what up? GollyWogs?

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 22:02

I think Ralph, Treacle means history.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 22:04

No,

why would they?

parkin2010 · 08/03/2014 22:08

Im not really going to be drawn into that Dawn other than to say I can tell you are deeply upset and that I genuinely do not like to hear. I do however find your post incredibly presumptuous.

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 22:15

That's okay Parkin, I found it incredibly rude, and yes, offensive of you to state that people go looking for racism, particularly as you have obviously never experienced it.
Dawndonna's DD

parkin2010 · 08/03/2014 22:19

As I say, presumptuous! But I hope you are ok.

namechangesforthehardstuff · 08/03/2014 22:19

Well I reckon that's ok Parkin you can find her presumptuous when she tells you what life is really like for her daughter.

I fnd your posts incredibly stupid. Just breathtakingly. Smile

gordyslovesheep · 08/03/2014 22:19

agreed

namechangesforthehardstuff · 08/03/2014 22:24

Sorry - just saw 'no why would they?' in answer to the question 'Did your parents ever mention anything about history' Grin

Treaclepot · 08/03/2014 22:26

Ralph, explains a lot. Was your Dad happy you had a Gollywog?

parkin2010 · 08/03/2014 22:27

And I find yours needlessly confrontational and yes presumptuous. But I'm sure we'll both cope.

NurseyWursey · 08/03/2014 22:28

Your poor DD Dawndonna. Absolutely disgusting. I'm sad we live in a world where people even contemplate doing that.

I would like to point out to Parkin, without wading too far in to a huge debate, that the 'baa baa' thing is complete tosh. The nursery in question was singing different forms of the song (happy, sad, rainbow, bouncy, hoppy) to introduce the children to different vocabulary. A tad off topic but that myth bugs me.

Anyway, the golliwog doll, IMHO is just a sad remnant of a racist and grotesque history and should be left there, however nostalgic it is for some people. Just because you don't find it offensive, millions of others do. It's not a question of individual offence, but respect and understanding toward others and the suffering you may cause them.

I know my child's nursery omits "black" so unfortunately it is not purely fictional. To me that is racist and trying to conduct an atmosphere of needless negative connotations about race from an early setting. Not helpful.

Treaclepot · 08/03/2014 22:37

Bollocks does it.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 22:38

Treacle He's the one who paid for it. Never found it offensive. Nobody I knew ever found it offensive. It's only here I've seen people have found so terrible.

I also don't know anyone who sits their kids down and teaches them history unless they're being home schooled. It's weird.

You were corrected on black board as it's a chalk board but you can say white board :) Maybe my school was just shitter than we all thought we were

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 22:43

To me that is racist In what way? Against whom?

I have never been sat down and told history, You go to school to learn that. I wouldn't think to sit down with my children and teach them history they go to school for that.

I know one girl that parents taught her history because she was home schooled :)
