I agree ralph. I dont find them racist, and quite frankly couldnt care less if others do!

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:16

Name

I'm a firm believer if you want to stop all the racism. Then just stop talking about race, racism etc.

In the one, one hour lesson we learnt about black history every time the 'N' word was mentioned I'd either get everyone looking at me waiting for me to gasp in horror or she say, "you know the naughty n word" Either reaction I couldn't understand because I wasn't offended.

It happened me, being offended now isn't going to change that fact, me being offended isn't going to stop it. Hence why I'm not offended i don't react to it, it doesn't bother me. I don't know anyone whom is offended by the term honky, cracker etc either.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:18

Dawn & Rabbit Would never of got that from you saying the R word. Not something I hear a lot.

RabbitPies · 08/03/2014 20:19

Oh yes that'll work well. If you ignore it it'll go away. Hmm

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:19

You see, Ralph, the thing is, you being offended by it is going to stop it. That's how things start, a few people say: This is offensive, a few more take it up, a groundswell of opinion starts and that's how we win. FFS with your attitude there would never have been a civil rights movement. Hmm

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:20

So defo you're a racist, but not able to say so. Why?

RabbitPies · 08/03/2014 20:20

Well I can assure you that people with learning disabilities hear it all too often.

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:20

Try having a child with special needs then, Ralph, we hear it plenty.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:21

The more you get offended by something the worst impact it has on people when used. It won't stop it being used the insult just gets worst.

If nobody ever talked about it, nobody would be offended because it wouldn't be said.

slithytove · 08/03/2014 20:21

I understand that the meaning has changed due to people using the term golliwog and wog as a slur against black people. But much like the example of malteasers and Oreos etc, the product itself was not created or named to be racist.

But we know better now. Just because something didn't start out as a symbol of racism doesn't mean that it's inherent, developed meaning isn't offensive enough now to be banned.

This is why Enid blyton books are edited, why swastikas are outlawed in some countries despite them being a positive symbol in some religions, etc etc.

I don't think Oreos should be banned though.

namechangesforthehardstuff · 08/03/2014 20:21

Ok great strategy ralph. Shame Martin Luther King didn't think of that. He could have not bothered having a dream in the first place and saved himself a shooting.

Not quite sure how you're supporting your brave anti-racism 'not talking about it' thingie on this thread though...

RabbitPies · 08/03/2014 20:22

Closing my eyes and pretending it doesn't exist hasn't worked with the huge heap of ironing I have,so I doubt it'll have much effect on racism/disablism/domestic violence etc.

Meepers · 08/03/2014 20:24

Those words aren't as commonly used as an insult though.

And stopping talking about racism won't stop it. In fact it would set us back years and lead back to an ignorance that although still around is a lot less common than even 20 years ago.

Joysmum · 08/03/2014 20:25

I rather like the fact that despite many taking offence, there is a strong core of people who have claimed them as being nothing more than a lovely icon and completely dismiss the race aspect. My love of them comes from my innocent childhood and I refuse to enter into the foray of offence.

To be offended gives power to those who intended offence, not something I want to be a party to.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:25

People say those things for a reaction and to offend you.

Stop reacting don't let it offended you and people stop doing it.

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:27

Oh good grief, nobody told me I was in a classroom of two year olds - I've got my hands over my eyes so you can't see me!

FFS Grow up.

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:28

To be offended gives power to those who intended offence, not something I want to be a party to.
Bollocks.

Meepers · 08/03/2014 20:28

If nobody talked about it nobody would be offended? Shock

It's attitudes like that that, that surprise me most. If we don't have the power of speech what do we have? It's thought patterns like that, that result in bloody wars.

Your ignorance amazes me.

gordyslovesheep · 08/03/2014 20:28

yes everyone STOP. Stop standing up for yourselves, Stop fighting oppression, stop tackling low level insidious racism, sexism, homophobia and disabledism - all put your fingers in your ears and go lalalalala - everything will just go away Hmm

bettergetamoveon · 08/03/2014 20:29

I've been told the first word my dh ever said was 'Golly' because of his soft toy which was his favourite. As an adult his mother had it repaired. I'm sure she must know it's racist, but was obviously sentimental or whatever. I was horrified by this but my dh just thought of it as favourite little friend as a child.

My own son was gifted a tiny little golly ornament by dh family. I hate it and find it offensive. I chucked it in a drawer. Recently I was childminding and when a mum came to collect her child my son brought this ornament out of nowhere to show the child. It's hardly teaching cultural diversity - I had a lot of explaining to do. The mother didn't seem bothered though.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:32

If I didn't talk to you about R words N words or whatever other words you can't be offended by me about them.

If people stop looking to offend and to be offended then you can all stop being upset by a rag doll

RabbitPies · 08/03/2014 20:32

Tried again and that fecking ironing pile is still there. I checked the English Defence League and BNP sites, and those fuckers are still around too it seems. I guess that means disability hate crime hasn't disappeared either.

Am I doing it wrong? Did I forget the magic word?

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:34

No, if EVERYBODY stopped buying rag dolls and using the N word and the R word we may be slightly further on, but Ralph there's a great big world out there, full of Nick Griffin, Nigel Farage, Jean Marie LePenn types. It's a big old racist world and you can hide in your little cave, but it's those of us that stand up and say that is wrong that enable you to stay safely in your little cave with your small minded views.

Meepers · 08/03/2014 20:34

People are offended by racism and you think that's a bad thing? Not talking about something doesn't make it vanish. You can only suppress something for so long before it erupts, if the whole world did that it would be disastrous.

RalphLaurenLover · 08/03/2014 20:37

It takes 1 person at a time.

I still like Gollywogs, still not offended by the N word and whatever else. Feel free to take up my hatred for that I've got better things to worry about than a doll and some words
