Why is it people insist on buying offense things like it's a badge of pride or a fuck you to people who are offended. Why would you want to purposely offend someone.

And just because one person says they are black and not offended does not mean they speak for all black people. That's as silly as me thinking oh I'm white so every white person must think the same way as me.

And barbies are not the same as golliwogs. They were not created to mock others. Did you know the bnp use the same arguments as on this thread about how we shold all accept these caricatures?

Barbie has its own issues, but that's a topic for another day,and at least she looks vaguely human. Gollies do not. They stereotype black people as other, less than human,as having large unattractive features,as mindless clowns,as caricature, not a real people.

I guess the people defending Gollies think that The Black and White Minstrel Show was harmless entertainment?

Which bit of racist don't you lot comprehend? They're racist, I don't care what colour you are, but they are racist. So, they quickly became friendly did they, funny because Enid Blyton's golliwog didn't become particularly friendly. And so fucking what, I'm sure Nick Griffin is friendly, doesn't stop him being a racist.

To be honest Ralph if you aren't offended by it then good for you. There are a lot of black people that are though. There are also many people of all ethnicities that are offended by them because of what they represent now. You don't speak for everyone.

Whether it was or wasn't originally meant as racially insulting or the name originally or not, derogatory towards black people is really beside the point. What these doll's and the name represent now is racist.

I wouldn't buy one and I would judge someone that did have one. I'm not saying I would judge them as being racist specifically but I would certainly judge them on their blatant ignorance.

I guess they are offensive in the same way as comedians 'blacking up' were offensive when i think about it.
or those strange things that i have only ever seen once, it is like a model of a black man holding out his hands to carry something?

Rabbbit I've never seen the Minstrel show. couldn't possibly comment on that one.

I never said I spoke for all black people. I'm just saying if one person i.e the OP's friend isn't offended as neither am I then why shouldn't we buy it. Our money, our lives after all. I could be offended by some things others do,but, say, wear it doesn't give me the right to dictate what you can't and can buy and do.

Yeah I might as well buy a white kkk hood, after all I'm not offended by it neither is my neighbour and it's my money my life my rules.... ffs

Report
Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:02

Oh dear god. You shouldn't buy it because although it may not offend you, it offends a significant number of others. Okay, your money, you can do as you choose, do you feel the same about those paying a membership to the BNP, it's their money?
If something is offensive to 20 people, so be it, but this is offensive to millions, that's an awful lot of people and guess what, they're not all black, either.

Many people do in America.

Then again in my school you were only allowed to learn about black history for one lesson.

You didn't just say you weren't offended. (Given that you've also said you're not offended by the n word I'm guessing that's a pretty high bar tbh) You said it wasn't racist. It is.

Look up The Black and White Minstrel show. It used the exact same stereotypes that Gollies perpetuate.

This thread is like the ones where people try to justify continuing to use the R word. No one's life will be poorer for being unable to buy a Gollie or say the R word. But if people continue to use the R word or reinforce racial stereotypes by selling or purchasing Gollies then that will have a very real impact on many, many others. You might not see the damage immediately, but the poison is dripping through just the same.

If you find it racist fair enough. I personally don't.

Well as I've said ralph I'm not sure there's much left that is racist once you're ok with the N-wordShock Shock Shock

Maybe some good old-fashioned consciousness raising for you this year.

Just because you don't find them racist Ralph doesn't mean they're not.

fusedog Essex is a long way though Wink at least from here.

They are no longer widely available because they are considered at best racially insensitive and at worst vilely racist. That ought to be a clue for most people.

Yes, Ralph the R word. Retard. Also extremely offensive.

Yes the R word. An offensive word beginning with R that is often used as an insult towards people who have learning disabilities.
