To think this a bit strange

My neighbours daughters aged 5 and 3 yrs were staying at mine the other afternoon as my neighbour asked me to mind them as she had a hospital appointment. Anyway I was changing my sons nappy and the 3 yr old said to me - boys have a penis and girls have a vagina, my mum showed me on daddy. His penis is bigger than Noah's( my son). I was really shocked that she said this, Aibu to think this shocking or is this normal?

Is it not quite normal for children to not only see their parents naked, but when in the changing rooms of the baths to see all the other naked people too? It was for me and will be for my dc i'm sure. This isn't just a MN thing as far as i know, but everyone i know has seen their parents naked when they were children (some still do). I can't imagine ever thinking this is unusual.

But it depends what the child meant by 'my mum showed me on daddy', it doesn't necessarily mean that mum called her over and said 'I've got something to show you', drops dad's trousers and points (which would indeed be weird!)

It could have been something like: child is in bath and asks mum if boys have a vagina like her, dad comes in to have a wee so mum points and says 'no, they have a penis like daddy'.

I had naked parents and we are naked parents too. My dc have never thought anything of it beyond a few conversations about me not having a willy. They don't know the proper names but as soon as they start asking I will tell them. It's healthy.

I have no idea whether it is normal or not.

if I assume that when the child said that their mum showed them their dad's penis that what actually happened was the child happened to see their dad naked and the mum just answered a question and gave information then yes, thats normal.

if I assume that when the child said that their mum showed them their dad's penis they meant exactly that, then no. I would not consider that to be normal.

nobody here has the information required to determine whether the child saw dad naked during ordinary family life, bathroom, getting dressed, whatever, or whether the child was, apropos of nothing, shown the father's penis by the mother. So all any of us can do is make assumptions. Most are assuming that the child was not shown but saw.

My ds often told people age 3. "My daddy has a big willy!"

TheDoctorsNewKidneys · 06/03/2014 09:31

Totally normal. I've seen both my parents naked plenty of times and it never bothered me until I was a teenager and got embarrassed. My dad still wanders around naked after a shower! It would only be an issue if they were doing it in front of random children/strangers.

When my nephew was about 3 or 4, he was learning shapes at nursery.

I was staying over one weekend, and had gone for a shower in the morning. I was washing my hair, so had my eyes closed, and after rinsing, I opened them to see him standing a foot away looking at me.

Proud as punch, he said 'triangle' and pointed at my fanny Grin
