Seems we missed the letter stating that they'd be dressing up (as usual), I check his bookbag everyday but we had no letter. Apparently it contained lots of cheap ideas.

Found out today they're dressing up on Thursday.

Which leaves me tomorrow to sort something out, and I'm at work tomorrow.

Ds has various character costumes but technically non from books.

He has no striped Dennis the Menace/Where's Wally type tshirts.

What do we do?

My 4 year old DS is Spider-man obsessed at the moment and will be going to nursery in his costume tomorrow. I just have no enthusiasm to do anything else and haven't in the the past and will be the same for most parents I would think. I've got years to make costumes and do all sorts with school so nursery I don't care.
I've got an Easter bonnet to make at some point before April which I'm dreading. I'm not creative at all

DD is going as Bellatrix Lestrange. Having just finished making the bastard costume, I really, really wish she'd wanted to go as an off-the-shelf character. Tried to persuade her to go in her school uniform so she could be Gabz from Demon Dentist, or ordinary clothes to be Stephanie from Skulduggery Pleasant, but noooo..........

Comics are books and Spiderman is an excellent example of a conflicted, tortured character with real moral dilemmas to face. Whereas I fear DD mostly wants to be Bellatrix so that she can shout 'Avada Kedavra!' at people...

That was pretty much what I did in school from junior yr up :o

Go in normal clothes claiming to be characters from books no one had heard of :o

Comics aren't illustrated books though. The relationships between words and pictures in comics is not quite the same as in picture books or other types of illustrated books. There are also structural forms characteristic of comics like panels and gutters and word balloons and decorative onomatopoeia and such like (although illustrators increasingly borrow these in picture books). This allows a very particular form of storytelling that demands particular skills to read.

Children who are reading comics are broadening their reading experiences and adding to their skill set.

So ner to anyone who says they aren't 'good enough'. Dismissing something simply because of the medium in which a story is told is shortsighted and a bit silly. People used to get all sneering about television, for example, but now a lot of television programming surpasses film in quality.

Bertie if my dd wanted to dress up I would encourage it but she hates dressing up, she has never got her head round it and refuses to wear any dressing up clothes. I am not going to force her just for the sake of it!!

I can't believe people would care or judge so much. As long as a kids clean and in clean clothes dies it matter what there costume is. No one knows the budget status of the mum or the working pattern that prevents bring able to buy anything, or if there's a crisis and dcs are at the grandparents/aunts etc.

Ds' school didn't dress up or anything last year so I wasn't expecting it.

I've discussed all possibilities with ds, Mr Bump, Horrid Henry, Harry and the Dinosaurs, Jack and the Beanstalk.

He's adamant that he wants to go as Spider-Man. If I suggest proper book characters he simply tells me he's seen Spider-Man books in Sainsburys, can't really argue with that can I?

Last year in DS Year 1 class there were no less than 6 Spidermen! I'm sure it will be fine. Have you got a Spider-Man book or comic you can send in with him to make the costume more justified?!

we should! also wish there was a Starbucks but I'd be a lot poorer than I already am

YANBU.

My DS is going as Batman.

I tried to get him to go as Burglar Bill or Wally, but he was really against the idea.
He doesn't like dressing up as other people (or at all really!) so I'm just going along with it- I'm expecting to see a lot of other superheroes there anyway!

Last year we pushed the boat out Wink and he went in jeans, holding a golden ticket which was then confiscated during assembly

One mum told me today she's spent nearly £25 on a costume!

Report
pyjamaramadrama · 05/03/2014 20:37

Gosh, what costume?

He actually doesn't have a Spider-Man book, but they're asking for a donation of an old book rather than bringing one in of the character.

and by the time you get to dc3 and have been a parent for 19 years, you will let them go dressed as whatever with not a thought in your head about proper books.

Ive sorted him a Charlie Bucket outfit which isnt very dissimilar to what he wears most weekends.

Dd1 (10) is reading Oliver Twist in school, so Ive made her a Nancy costume (size 18 dress from charity shop, adjusted to fit her and an apron made out of an old shirt -my 1st sewing job and im pretty damn proud of it Wink )
Dd2 (5) Merida
Dd3 (nearly 4) Rapunzel

I did want dd2 to go as Fancy Nancy but she's never had a chance to wear her Merida costume so wants to wear that. If the children were willing, they'd go as "proper" book characters but I can't be dealing with a tantrum on the morning so they'll go in whatever will get them out the door quickest.

Rockybalboa I do have boys as it happens. What exactly was it about my comments that you don't like? Have you tried to work in a classroom of over 30 children, where at least 8 are dressed as Spiderman for the day? It really isn't much fun. They never seem to bring books or comics in to back up their character either.
