Seems we missed the letter stating that they'd be dressing up (as usual), I check his bookbag everyday but we had no letter. Apparently it contained lots of cheap ideas.

Found out today they're dressing up on Thursday.

Which leaves me tomorrow to sort something out, and I'm at work tomorrow.

Ds has various character costumes but technically non from books.

He has no striped Dennis the Menace/Where's Wally type tshirts.

What do we do?

We thought about ds going as Spider-Man, we have the costume and it would be easy. Ds is actually going as one of fudgefacemcz suggestions. He came up with the idea himself, I was quite impressed. My dds are both going in pre bought disney princess costumes (I class princess dresses in the same category as Spider-Man on the book front, I'm sure there are books out there, but they are cartoon characters rather than book characters). A bit of a cop out really. We DO read to the children, but we don't have loads of spare time for making costumes and I don't have the vision to be able to make costumes out of one of DH old tshirt and a sheet. I'm obviously a really bad parent, I hate dressing up day at school.

this is why I think the whole dressing-up thing is so irrelevant to World Book Day - in DD's nursery it was come as your favourite Disney Princess, as far as I could tell. Which, in itself, is fine and I can understand that parents don't want to have to buy new costumes, or have the skill or time to make them - or indeed get their DC to wear them!

But it's not got much to do with books, or certainly good books - most 'novelisations' are pretty badly written, some of the TV ones we've had have been dire - they're not Julia Donaldson or Anthony Browne or David McKee, that's for sure.

I found it all pretty pointless and a bit dispiriting to be honest.

Stick him in some dirty clothes and don't wipe his face after breakfast. Voila - Mr Twit!

We could do Harry & Dinosaurs, bit worried about the dinosaurs going missing I wonder if ds will say it's a baby book.

I'm thinking Mr Bump but ds will not be happy if all of his friends turn up in their Spider-Man and Batman costumes.

Oh poo, sent too soon sorry.
Was going to say .... Haha at "fuck that in its arse!

Spider-Man sounds good to me.
Dressing up for dc is like what to give them for tea.
You may think its great but if they don't like it. They won't wear/eat it.

my eldest is going as Horowitz's Alex Rider (normal clothes), my youngest as a farmer (overalls and flat cap which he has anyway). They won't be noticed for all the girls in random 'princess' dresses... Grin

my dd is going as rapunzel, actually most of the disney princesses are from original fairy tales, so I dont think they are cop outs, just because they have been disneyfied, does not mean they are now irrelevant as literary characters, but now you can just buy the costume from asda Grin we all knew the stories about the frog prince and rapunzel rapunzel let down your hair , long before tiana or tangled ever came to the screen, also I could send her as a dalmation, as she loved the book by dodie smith, think I have a spotty onesie somewhere Hmm

DS1 runs screaming from any form of dressing up. As suggested by a lovely poster last year he is going as Horrid Henry.

I think the school is getting them to cough up a quid for the school in Nigeria they're sponsoring so I don't feel bad in the slightest.

Well, if some one chooses to judge people on one dress up day per year then so be it! Ds2 going dressed as Mickey Mouse is not a representation of our home library as it were. We have books coming out of our ears, by a variety of authors but dd got a Mickey Mouse book for Christmas, ds2 likes 2 of the stories so chose to go as Mickey Mouse. I am actually sat here sewing the tail and white spots on his costume. Ds1 should have been going as Ben from Gangsta Granny, but he has chicken pox so will dress up in it for a photo and I will put the bits away for next year hopefully!
I thought World Book day was meant to encourage a love of books and reading, I really would prefer my children to read a book they enjoyed from a 'lesser' literary author than false them to read books they hate and put them off of reading just because they are written by a literary great.

I have suggested several different characters to my ds, but he is determined to go as Spider-Man. His twin is going as the tiger who came to tea! They are in year 1.

Tbh you're better off not making too much of an effort ,anyway. From what I remember when I used to do world book day dress up no one gave a shit nor noticed. In fact ,one year ,there was tons of amazing costumes and the boy who wore a dress won in assembley ; he never did explain what book character he was.

My ds is a prolific reader and has many favourite characters. Last year however he went as scooby doo as that was his new dressing up costume from Halloween.
Seriously, why make life difficult? Just go for whats in the dressing up box!

Agree, it will be fine for him to go as spidey. My daughter is going as Belle. And yes, I realise she is a "random" Disney princess. We read loads too. There is another really, very annoying thread in chat about this, loads of hand wringing about making bloody silly costumes. Everyone knows it is really dressing up day.

Standinginline.. maybe The Boy In a dress by David Walliams

I just asked ds what he fancied being out of what we have: boy in a dress is doable, Ron wesley doable (he's a redhead so no need to knit a wig), horrid Henry? and he said he'd go as a muggle from Harry Potter. Case solved!

He's got police, doctor outfits, any books with those in? Brains not working, so tired.

I could make a mask or hat of some sort on my lunch at work tomorrow.
