Wibu to send ds as Spider-Man for World Book Day?

pyjamaramadrama · 04/03/2014 20:48

Seems we missed the letter stating that they'd be dressing up (as usual), I check his bookbag everyday but we had no letter. Apparently it contained lots of cheap ideas.

Found out today they're dressing up on Thursday.

Which leaves me tomorrow to sort something out, and I'm at work tomorrow.

Ds has various character costumes but technically non from books.

He has no striped Dennis the Menace/Where's Wally type tshirts.

What do we do?

simon scarrow has written loads of gladiator books for kids, and there's the eagle of the ninth series.

Ds is going as Hiccup, from the how to train your dragon books, luckily he didn't want to go as Toothless the dragon Shock even more luckily is that 4 years ago ds1 dressed as Hiccup Grin

I do remember ds2 dressing as the gingerbread man in infants (traditional stories theme) he hated it as he got chased throughout playtime it was a fab costume too

TantrumsAndBalloons · 05/03/2014 10:52

Please, I beg you not to get in a state about this or buy things or make a red paper wig (?) in your lunch hour.

No one except people who have nothing better to do than judge everyone else because they are so amazing, cares.

They just don't.

Does your child read? Of course he does.
Is he reading for pleasure rather than trawling through the whole Shakespeare collection at 4 because he is so "advanced"?
Yes? Then that's good.
World book day is not about which parent can make the most elaborate costume.

storynanny · 05/03/2014 10:54

Would also like to add that in my experience, lots of little ones have had enough of being in their costume by about 11am and are desperate to put something else on!

SomethingkindaOod · 05/03/2014 10:58

World book day Angry I hate it. DD decided she wanted to go as a particular character from a set of books she has and I have spent ages trying to persuade her to go as something else, but no, she's told everybody what she's going as and as 'Mum's really good at sewing' apparently I'm going to make her a really good costume. I tried to persuade her to go as Sleeping Beauty but that's boring, even when I explained to her where the story originally comes from (and I have a book with the explanation in).
Bollocks. I'm not actually even that good at sewing, I wing it most of the time!!
YANBU, Spider-Man was originally a book not a cartoon so it'll be fine.

TeaJunky · 05/03/2014 10:59

Our school's letter states 'no superhero costumes or football kits please'. Blush

Dd is wearing a snow white nightdress that actually looks like a costume with a head band and everything for 3.99 from Argos! Grin

Last time I checked they were still in stock!

BigRedBall · 05/03/2014 11:03

Shock @ "fake red hair out of paper". That is just so rude!

CalamitouslyWrong · 05/03/2014 11:03

DS2's school have asked them to dress as superheroes tomorrow.

elliejjtiny · 05/03/2014 11:13

Most of the boys at school are going as superheroes. DS1 is going as the fat controller, DS2 is going as mr bump and DH is going as captain kirk

Sovaysovay · 05/03/2014 11:16

I got a furry gilet a few months ago and a khaki green top. Stick on a brown belt, and he's going as Hiccup from How to Train a Dragon.

I plan ahead. March 6th happens every year.

We were also considering a red t shirt with narrow black stripes, black shorts or trousers and some hair gel, and going as Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.

CalamitouslyWrong · 05/03/2014 11:19

You can't necessarily plan ahead because you don't know if your school/class are going to get a theme/more specific instructions. As I said, we've been told it's dress as a superhero day at school tomorrow.

NotMushroom · 05/03/2014 11:24

Something has just described the other headache in all this. It's all very well some saying just do this or that (paper red hair??Hmm) and voila!.. a costume!

But the children have their own expectation of what will be magically conjured up to wear. So not only do you have to produce an outfit, you are struggling with a potentially disappointed child too. Just what you need pre school run at the start of a hectic day.

And schools stating no super-hero/football kits need to get over themselves. What will they do? Send someone home who turns up in the 'wrong' outfit?

Fostering a love of reading doesn't come via missives from school regarding fancy dress and stressing out parents. I'd love to know who dreamt all this up. Just do some reading, talk about books, bring in a book. The whole point of books is that you can escape into them with minimal effort. That's the beauty of themConfused

JessMumsnet · 05/03/2014 12:21

We're loving all of your creative character choices! Just to let you know that there's some more great easy costume ideas over here. Outfits that you can pull together in just a few minutes with nothing more than the sort of stuff you can find lying around at home.

Happy World Book Day! It will all be over tomorrow Grin for another year, at least.

CreepyLittleBat · 05/03/2014 12:22

Slightly off topic, but have the people dissing comic books/graphic novels actually read any? They're awesome. And if you have a 10yr old book refusing ds, then Spiderman is your god.

RussianBlu: you don't have boys I assume? What wanky comments to make.

ziggiestardust · 05/03/2014 15:42

DS is going as Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates (TV show) because frankly, I don't give a damn and it's the only costume he has. I'm not making one because I can't be bothered.

Johnogroats · 05/03/2014 15:43

Our school has said to send in an accessory - full costumes not required. DS2 is taking a menhir (Obelix's rock) made out of a milk container and a balloon and a bit of papier mache....I hope it dries out.

DS1 is wearing a yellow shirt and going as Bradley Wiggins.

Thank god it's not more complicated.

dawntigga · 05/03/2014 15:47

As somebody who devours book and collects American comics can I just say a big fuck you to the judgey arses? I can? Good.

Fuck you.

Also, comics are a literature genre so yes, it's perfectly acceptable.

Moonfacesmother · 05/03/2014 15:53

The parents of the kids in ds's class were talking about world bastarding book day today.
Most children are going as Spider-Man / a pirate / a princess.

Ds said he wanted to be a knight which was fine because we have a knight's outfit. However he now wants to be Moonface Hmm

In addition to this we have to take in a book that we no longer want. We want all of ds's books! I've already given away the books he had when he was younger so there really aren't any that he doesn't still like and appreciate. This annoys me that I will have to go and buy a book or give one that we don't want to.

Gileswithachainsaw · 05/03/2014 15:55

:o well said tigga

Moonfacesmother · 05/03/2014 15:56

In fact, warming the the subject, in the last week school have asked for:

World book day costume and a book to give to the school.
£5 for a meet the author day next Monday plus anther optional £5-10 to buy one of his books and have it signed.
£2.50 to meet the animal man
£13.00 for a school trip.

It's times like these I am glad I only have one child.

supermariossister · 05/03/2014 15:56

my child is going as Darth Vader, as he has the costume already and wants too. if that makes me a lazy fuck so be it Grin. agree with you tigga my fellow Cheshire person if I remember rightly

Badvoc · 05/03/2014 15:58

Ds is going as a Viking from how to train your dragon.
Furry gilet and furry boots from e bay for a grand total of £5.
Helmet, axe, etc we already have.
He has even drawn his own book of dragons! :)
I really don't see the issue wrt comic book characters.
Comics are books.
Illustrated books.
Comics can instill a love of reading in reluctant readers ime and so they should be encouraged.

SocialButterfly · 05/03/2014 15:59

Just send him in normal clothes and he can be Biff, Chip or Kipper I can't remember which are boys

BertieBotts · 05/03/2014 16:00

A "normal clothes" costume is boring to children.

OP YANBU.
