To agree that stupid people are breeding more than smart ones

I read this article and the comments. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22002530

It is not unrealistic that the human race will be extinct one day, especially since the sun is probably finite.

There was a comment on that page that refers to Mike Judge's film Indiocracy - suggesting the problem is that stupid people are breeding more than intelligent people because smart people are more responsible. The film is a comedy but the commentator says 'it's bang on the money on what's happening at the moment'.

I actually found myself agreeing. Most of the intelligent people I know have as many children as they can afford (which is one or two maximum).

AIBU to think this?

Charming

LEMmingaround · 02/03/2014 16:48

I would imagine then, tht you have quite a brood!

Kezzybear · 02/03/2014 16:48

Well I have three, does that make me stupid? All planned and we support ourselves except for child benefit.

Kezzybear · 02/03/2014 16:50

yabu as I'm sure u know.

Holamum · 02/03/2014 16:52

I am not saying that I am one of the intelligent ones - I am more of an emotional person. Only that the intelligent people I know have less children. Look at the Clintons - they just had one.

Even if it were the case, why does it matter?

What you are arguing smacks of eugenics to me

BrownSauceSandwich · 02/03/2014 16:52

The sun is finite... Well, I don't plan on worrying about that for another few billion years. Confused

LucilleBluth · 02/03/2014 16:53

So the offspring of the 'stupid' people are automatically stupid too Shock

Ludways · 02/03/2014 16:54

Uneducated doesn't mean they are stupid and educated doesn't mean you're intelligent.

I'm educated and intelligent, so there!

SwayingBranches · 02/03/2014 16:54

All I got from the article is that scientists will kill us all!

LEMmingaround · 02/03/2014 16:54

Yeah - look at the clintons! He didn't even think so cover his PA's laundry bill - real bright spark there!

Idiocracy is the worst.

RedFocus · 02/03/2014 16:55

We have 3 dc's and we support ourselves without benefits. I would say neither of us are stupid. We went to University and I had a good job before the dc's arrived and my dh is an engineer.
So YABU op and pretty stupid yourself.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/03/2014 16:55

Survival of the fittest does not necessarily refer to the intellectually superior.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 02/03/2014 16:55

A shame you worded your title so thoughtlessly as I think there could have been an interesting debate on this issue.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 02/03/2014 16:56

Is this the same Clinton that did not know a blow job in his office was the same as sexual contact?

ikeaismylocal · 02/03/2014 16:57

The intelligent people you know op can't be especially intelligent if they can only afford 1 or 2 children.

Do you think the Clinton's could only afford one so they thought they'd be reasonable and just stick to the one dc?

LEMmingaround · 02/03/2014 16:58

Actually you have a point - David Cameron has four children!

Grennie · 02/03/2014 16:58

This OP is based on the idea that intelligence is hereditary. Actually there is a drfit towards the mean in terms of intelligence. So less intelligent parents are more likely to have children that are more intelligent than them and closer to average, and vice versa with more intelligent parents.

Innogen · 02/03/2014 16:59

My parents are thick and I'm welllllll clever.

They had two and I want four. -rolls eyes-

Grennie · 02/03/2014 16:59

And survival of the fittest is about the survival of species, not individuals. There is lots of evidence to show that kindness and altruism helps our individual survival.

"Most of the intelligent people I know have as many children as they can afford (which is one or two maximum)."

The Clintons can only afford one or two?

Do you live in a shoe, OP?

Joysmum · 02/03/2014 17:00
