To have reported neighbour

Tax disc on his second car, they have a main car and a works van, ran out at the end of January.
This car is mainly parked on the road, as is the van and other car, they have room on their drive for one car,but don't use it.
I have now seen him driving the car with out of date tax 4 times now. I reported him on the DVLA website this afternoon.

If it were 99% of my neighbours I'd remind them first.

If it was the utter twat across the road and up then I would have great* delight in bringing it to the DVLA. That'd be karma all right...

Terrortree · 01/03/2014 22:17

I don't care if you were being vindictive. If I were in accident with him, and it was his fault, I have no option to take civil action against him (which is a hassle and very costly). I think you've done the right thing.

Recently I was a victim of crime (theft of over 12K worth of plant/materials) and the point has been made that the only reason I have been reunited with my property (damaged as it is) is because the person with whom my property was found is a deeply unpopular character. People were just waiting for him to fuck up and were very happy to ring Crimestoppers.

Moral of the story, if you are going to be a cunt, be a popular one!

Joysmum · 01/03/2014 22:18

Good for you for reporting it. I wouldn't feel any remorse for people who choose to break the law. His choice, his consequences. If it is taxed and just not displayed, they'll know on the computer.

It doesn't invalidate insurance, no MOT would do that and the driver on the policy not having license entitlement to drive it would.

Nicknacky · 01/03/2014 22:21

Terror, why would you need to take civil action?

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 22:21

Rinky I have an opinion biased towards being on the receiving end of a neighbour who reported me for having a tax disc out of date( when nothing illegal had taken place) That is what I was trying to share with you, that I think it made the situation worse and made me feel quite upset that someone would do that in a street of otherwise lovely neighbours. But it got lost on you( because you failed to acknowledge that at all, along with others' opinions about you being unreasonable).

You never know what is happening in other people's lives and you never have the full facts when you don't know them.

SirChenjin · 01/03/2014 22:23

I wouldn't care what was going on in the life of my twat of a neighbour - he doesn't give a shit about anyone else, and it's up to him to make sure his tax disk is up to date. He's a grown up.

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 22:26

Would you have reported any of your neighbours or just him?

HunterWellies · 01/03/2014 22:28

Just to be clear (in case I have misread your last post referring to me) I think, on balance, yaNbu.

You should have tax, mot and insurance before you drive your car. Generally, I'd be inclined to give a neighbour a heads up, but your neighbour sounds a bit unapproachable and possibly a bit of an arse.

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 22:28

Olympic, it wasn't lost on me, you were parked on a private road and driving your car. That is fine, but the person still decided to report you.for reasons that you explain.

OP posts:
Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 22:28

I would report anyone who had no/out of date tax disc.

CrohnicallyFarting · 01/03/2014 22:29

But olympic your situation is different as you haven't done anything illegal. The neighbour described in the OP has as he's been seen driving his car.

Therefore he is either failing to display (which the OP ruled out by running a tax check on him).
Or has failed to tax his vehicle
Or has falsely declared SORN

I don't blame the OP for not speaking to him, as I said earlier if you spoke to a neighbour about it and then a fine or policeman arrived at his door, the OP would be first in the firing line (even if it wasn't her). In fact olympic do you know for sure (as in informed by police or by informant themselves) which neighbour it was? Or are you assuming because they have been complaining about you before? Can you see why Op might be reluctant to speak to them directly?

Looby12 · 01/03/2014 22:30

I think yabu, you wouldn't go along and check the tax disc of every car you walked past and report them if it was out of date would you?

RinkyDinkyDoo · 01/03/2014 22:33

Sorry hunter, I was referring to the majority of posts throughout the whole thread who seem to have classed me as being unreasonable.
As people have said, if it's all legal then there's no problem for anyone.
And Olympic, sorry,it was meant to say, you were not driving around.

OP posts:
olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 22:34

We're all fucked

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 22:34

Why do people get so het up about something that is none of their business?

The only person affected by not having a tax disc, is the driver of that vehicle.

It's not like fraudulently claiming benefits etc, which cost the taxpayer.

If someone decides not to pay their car tax, that's their look out.

Someone that reports that is just a nosy busy body as there is no other motive.

SirChenjin · 01/03/2014 22:36

Was your car parked on your driveway and not driven at all Olympic? Haven't read the whole thread, sorry.

Wrt my twattish neighbour - he's the only one I would report, the others I would remind (if I noticed...). The thing is, if you're generally a Nice Person, don't piss off your neighbours and show them consideration, then providing they are Nice People too they'll generally look out for you. Otherwise, they might just quietly look for a way to seek revenge Grin

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 22:37

Someone has no tax, then gets into an accident, who foots the bill? Insurance companies. They then raise the prices across the board. That affects everyone, including you bear if you have a car.

olympicvibes · 01/03/2014 22:38

I had my glaringly obvious suspicions. ( Then the policeman told me on the third visit )
He then went to have a serious little chat with the twat neighbour for harassment.

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 22:40

But the whole point is the driver of the non taxed car wouldn't get a pay out (but anyone else involved would) so how would that put up everyone else's premiums poppy?

Terrortree · 01/03/2014 22:43

Agree with Poppy67.

And to answer NickyNacky above, the twat who is driving that car into any of my vehicles will need to be sued for me to recover my costs. My vehicles are 'working' vehicles so I lose work per day over and above the inherent value of the vehicle.

In simple terms, I can only recover the damage twat man causes, I have to sue for loss of income.

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 22:44

The insurance company is liable for the other car if there was an accident. You may need to claim on your own insurance. Someone has to pay and it gets passed down to the customers.

SirChenjin · 01/03/2014 22:46

Bear - the costs associated with accidents caused by non-insured drivers are pushing up insurance costs for the rest of us. How do you not know that?!!

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 22:47

But the insurance company would have been liable even if the other car had been taxed so where's the difference?

Completely agree that driving without insurance us a whole different kettle of fish.

Poppy67 · 01/03/2014 22:48

The insurance company may not pay out as the insure has not complied with the t&c of the policy.

Plus if he has no tax he may not have insurance or MOT.

Bearbehind · 01/03/2014 22:49

Er, because there is no indication that this driver is not insured sirchenjin

How do you not know that? Hmm
